I'm doing the same - 12 mini to 16 (or 16 pro). I'll probably give my phone to my 7 year old to use as a camera/video camera. Still haven't decided which phone to upgrade to, but I sure would like the sweet 120hz screen of the pro. Only concern I have is (with it being so big/heavy) the hole it will create in my trouser pocket(s) 😅
Does that explain why you’ll have empty pockets? 😅

Take comparison pics when you get it in!

Also it's best to get the battery replaced. So it is at a fresh 99-100%. Even if you plan on using it "in a few years" that 72% will not get through a day with use any longer to be reliable and remain powered on with a child.
Mine is at 81 and I'm wondering if I should or even can still get it replaced.

Is there a point at which the apple store will stop offering paid battery replacement service for the 13 mini?

When the iPhone 13 mini is classified as obsolete. This means that it is past vintage ages from more than 5-7 years since it got discontinued by Apple.

Way to go for that I think. IPhone X was just made vintage this year. Which makes it year 7
That is why Apple dropped iOS support out of the iPhone X and iPhone 8 since iOS 17. Hope the iPhone XR isn’t next to be dropped in iOS 19… that is why I am finding iPhone 15 Pro deals

I have a feeling that the next SE would be the mini size to differentiate between the 6.1”-display old gen phones.

That’s not what the rumours say but yeah to me this also makes sense: distinguish by size and camera, otherwise continuing to sell the 14 makes no sense whatsoever.
And if not, I will be hoping next year will see a SE mini.

I'm one of the very few still holding on to the original 4" SE. Coming months with the arrival of iOS18 support for my banking app will likely end and I will need to look for an alternative. Still on the fence whether I should take the 13 mini or go for the SE2 or SE3.

advantages of the 13 mini:
-smaller size so more pocketable and comfortable to hold
-flat edges give a better grip, not a fan of the rounded edges
-dual cameras
-better battery life
-faster wireless charging

advantages of the SE:
-smaller screen so better to use one handed
-square screen, no notch
-physical home button
-no camera bump with a case
-cheaper

Difficult choice...havent made up my mind yet.

Finally updated my se1 to iOS 15.8.3 the latest signed and it’s been fun comparing it against my 13mini

Both wonderful devices in their own rights and the most powerful version of their compact form factor

I miss my iPhone 5s. It just cannot handle the more modern versions of iOS 13-up. But at least it fits in the tightest of pockets.

I have the SE3, it's not THAT bad, I'm surprised it doesn't get more love since it checks all the boxes for small phone users and at this point it's all we have. I'm thinking of getting another in case this one dies, since the 4 isn't going to be all that small. I'm preordering the smaller 16 and I will see how it feels, I still have my purple 12 and hoping it's similar in terms of weight and feel in the hand, otherwise I may go back to the SE, because one handed usage rocks!

I had the iPhone 8 (same form factor as the SE) and have now iPhone 13 mini.
Was afraid I would struggle with faceID vs touchID, but it’s fine. The camera was a big improvement. Battery life is good enough for me.

If any detailed questions, send me a PM! ☺️

Through 2021, I owned every iPhone series except the 4. I had the iPhone 11 Pro, which I liked, and now have the iPhone 13 mini, which I like more. I returned the iPhone 12 Pro because of the increase in size. I thought the mini would be popular among iPad owners because iPad owners don’t use their iPhone at home and would therefore prioritize portability. But I was wrong. That’s just me and a few fellow travelers here. The screenshots below illustrate the problem. Those few extra millimeters make a big difference for pocketability and the weight of the 16 Pro suggests a need for the industrial design equivalent of Ozempic.

I kinda wish the Ultra air or whatever next year was available in smaller size too

A humongous screen thats ultra thin sounds kinda cool, but a small phone that is ultra thin sounds even cooler :D It won't be though sadly

Admitted defeat. My last iPhone was a 13 Mini. Just ordered a regular 16.

We have to come to terms with the era of the reasonably-sized phone being over. As a wise man once said, "SAD".

This thread is reminding me of an episode of the US tv show Seinfeld, where the group had a wager to see who could asbtain from something the longest.

I will upgrade AND I will keep using 13 mini in rotation (..assuming I keep the 16 pro)
Spigen 16pro clear TPU case arrived super quick just ordered it late last night.

Happy to keep using my 13 Mini. I replaced the battery in the last year, so that is a non-issue. Will probably keep it on iOS17 to avoid slowdowns. If Apple never, ever makes a smaller phone again I will inevitably be forced to switch (inside or outside Apple’s ecosystem), but for now it’s still working fine.

A reminder to all that the most eco-friendly thing to do is keep your current phone. We live in a culture of constant upgrading, but withholding our consumerism helps the planet in the long run. Staying with my Mini is also partially influenced by that.

This is what I do. I’ve kept the 13 mini as a backup to my Pro Max. It’s a bit of a nuisance to transfer the eSIM over, but there are times when I prefer the size and weight of the mini (road races, formal occasions, etc.). Any time I think I’ll be taking photos (like traveling) I much prefer the large phone.

We may never see another iPhone this size, so I’m holding onto it as long as it still functions. I’m happy I’m still at 95% battery health.

Switch to what? No other small modern-ish smart phones exist period :D
