Man these introduced us to the short-lived 30 pin connector. It got eradicated with lightning connectors as our last proprietary connector of :apple: until 2023 when the company needed to comply with new EU regulations.
Short lived???

2003 (the advent of the 30 pin) was a lonngggg time ago now :)

Mb mb it was FireWire y’all! It was the original 30 pin. The last iPhone to get it is the iPhone 4s. iPod touch 4th generation and the iPad 3. All during Steve Jobs and shortly after he passed these devices left a legacy in Apple design history.

Yeah, I got a regular 16 today and will decide whether to keep it or the Pro. But for now…16 wins. It feels much closer to the 13 mini and it looks way better too :)
Which are you going to keep? Smaller/lighter form factor, or pro features?

Regular 16. “Pro” features are not stuff I need or use, even though I’d love to give them use. And Promotion is really not such a big deal for me (it is on the iPad, but not on the iPhone).
The 16 just feel a lot lighter and slimmer on the hand. It’s a much nicer phone to use.

I asked this in another thread but this is more relevant to this audience:

I'm considering returning the 16 pro for a 15 pro and one of the reasons could be for about size/weight.
Does anyone notice a difference in the size of the 15 pro compared to the 16 pros?

After a brief (very brief) flirtation with the 15 Pro I sent it back. I just couldn't get over the size and bulk. I think mini owners are lucky Apple left us such a great phone to carry through the years. I know that somewhere in the future I'll have to turn over the mini, but until then I'll enjoy the powerful little package.

I have owned a 6S Plus and a 13 Mini. I loved the fact that the 13 mini's screen was almost the same size as the 6S plus, but in a much smaller device.

My friend has a XS Max. Yesterday, I held up my new 16 Pro against it, and they are just about the same size when they're both in cases. Which means that the 16 Pro is really the same size as a Plus or Max size phone of past years.

That's just so wrong.

Since I’m on t mobile and not likely to switch in the next two years regardless of whether I use a phone upgrade, I feel like I “should” take a zero cost upgrade from 13 mini to 16. But I would surely miss the size of the mini.
I got the 16 pro but am having some regrets. Love everything except the size and weight. Actually I thought it would be the size but it’s more the weight. Not sure I can adjust.

I went from the 12 mini to the 16 pro and yea, it was just too heavy to use comfortably for me. I returned it. I am going to take a look at the standard 16 at the Apple store this weekend. It's quite a bit lighter.

Why the pro?
I was in doubt too. I had a 13 mini and loved it, except the battery. Before that I had an 11, I found it too bulky and heavy.
Today I bought a 16. After comparing the specs (16 versus 16 pro) I considered the lower weight of the 16 as a plus, and I don't need any of the pro features. base model is cheaper too.
No regrets so far, it's a good upgrade.
I could have replaced the battery of the 13 mini but then I would miss the other improvements and in the end the bigger screen has also it's advantages ..

Well i thought the main issue would be size not weight, so I didn’t think the extra weight of the pro would matter. What I like about the pro compared to the regular 16 is the telephoto lens, better battery life, and pro motion, in that order. Don’t care much about any of the other differences. If there were a 16 mini with the specs of the regular 16 I’d for sure go for that over the pro, but the minimal size and weight advantages of the 6.1” 16 aren’t enough to offset those advantages for the pro.

I went traveling with my 13 mini in another continent and man this was thing does so great. Unlocked so international data, Pay everything with tap to pay, navigate cobble stone streets, board different planes, take pictures, research stuff. Have emails for tour bookings and hotels. What can you ask and it’s a 3 yr old iphone.
And 512gb means I’m using this to transfer pics from my camera to sync to iCloud. Why would I update and it does what I need it to do?

Better battery life on the pro doesn’t seem to be true. Don’t believe everything apple says ;) the promotion display consumes more battery.

So the telephoto lens is the only “pro” feature, along with the 120hz display, which I don’t miss.

The other cameras are also better on base 16 compared to 16 mini, with 2x optical zoom and macroscopic mode.

So for me the reasons to upgrade from the mini are:

Better battery life, better cameras, newer chipset, then the dynamic island and camera button.. (in that order).

Telephoto lens i don’t need, 120hz display neither… and there’s the price difference too.

Perfect phone would have the features of the pro without the size, the weight anf the price tag, but that doesn’t exist yet ;)

Where can I buy 16 Mini? 🤔

I haven’t seen reporting suggesting the pro doesn’t have better battery life. My battery life so far has been pretty epic. Had this been reported?

Huh. Interesting. Tom’s Guide disagrees.

Indeed... I wonder what would make the pro lasting longer on a charge, as they have similar battery capacity?

Anyway I'm very happy with my 16, battery life is much much better than the mini 13 (with 84% reported battery capacity), and that's the primary reason I bought it.

I miss the size of the mini 13 a bit, not that the 16 is too big to hold in my hand but it's so addictive I would use it all day..

The display can slow the display to 1hz on static images and it helps a lot with battery (variable refresh). For example you on macrumors and reading and not moving the screen. It slows it to 1hz. Not 120hz.
On 60hz it stays at 60 whether your moving the screenings or its a static page.

The Apple watch has this same technology and how it optimizes the display with small battery. Pretty cool tech. The series ten can now change the display to 1hz on the aod when the screen is “down” or wrist is not raise. So the minute hand refreshes 1 second at a time.

My wife upgraded from her iPhone 13 mini to the iPhone 16 Pro and has been very happy with her decision. She said she will miss the size and weight of the 13 mini, but overall she has no regrets. From the better, brighter and bigger screen to the improved cameras to the better speakers it is better in most every way for her (and me from my 12 Pro). It definitely feels like a big jump when you jump generations at one time.

A week in now, and I am enjoying the 16 Pro's better cameras and better screen. It's still too heavy and big, but it's a brilliant phone.
