The display can slow the display to 1hz on static images and it helps a lot with battery (variable refresh). For example you on macrumors and reading and not moving the screen. It slows it to 1hz. Not 120hz.
On 60hz it stays at 60 whether your moving the screenings or its a static page.

The Apple watch has this same technology and how it optimizes the display with small battery. Pretty cool tech. The series ten can now change the display to 1hz on the aod when the screen is “down” or wrist is not raise. So the minute hand refreshes 1 second at a time.

ok so then the battery life depends more on the kind of activity you're doing than on the screen time itself. like with gaming etc the 120hz would consume more power. Well anyway for me it doesn't matter so much as the 16 gets me through the day easily and I don't miss the 120hz (though I noticed the difference when I was looking at a pro model in the shop, it's not a must-have for me )

Ya it really not a big deal. I’m all 60hz (iPhone mini, MacBook Air, and iPad mini). My watch ultra is the only one that has this 1hz refresh technology

Regular 16. “Pro” features are not stuff I need or use, even though I’d love to give them use. And Promotion is really not such a big deal for me (it is on the iPad, but not on the iPhone).
The 16 just feel a lot lighter and slimmer on the hand. It’s a much nicer phone to use.
Yea I did the same (in the end). Returned the pro for the regular 16. So much more comfortable to use!

Somehow I don't understand why people who once chose the 12/13 mini or SE would now suddenly need a 5x telelens and a 120hz display... and accept the heigher weight and price of the pro model. For me the only phone that I would consider besides the base 16 is ... my old 13 mini (with a new battery).

I will explain what my wife told me as to why she switched from her iPhone 13 mini to the iPhone 16 Pro instead of the base 16.

1) She wanted a better zoom camera to get better pictures of things farther away - pretty simple
2) The 120hz display was noticeable when seeing the iPhone 16 Pro in person
3) The size advantage of the iPhone 13 mini diminished for her over time in favor of a better screen and cameras

There is nothing wrong with anyone being a fan of the iPhone 12/13 mini or the base model iPhone 16. Having said that, there is also nothing wrong with wanting to take advantage of the extra features on the Pro models compared to the base models. The good thing is there is choice for iPhone customers. What I wish they offered were the iPhone 16 mini and an iPhone Pro mini which is not likely to ever happen.

I traded my 13 mini for a Samsung flip 5 and now back on a iphone 15 pro.

The 13 mini battery was very lackluster, the flip 5 was equally as bad, form factor amazing, but i like to travel and it is just unpractical to constantly unfold for google maps and too fragile to rely my solo trips on.

The 15 pro is the way to go for me now, in the future it may even become a pro max phone.

The iphone mini 13 and flip 5 were great, but the more social i become and make new friends on the way the more i am active on social media to keep in contact with them while i am not not there. My needs are shifting.

I really don't understand how you can go from Mini to a PM. I had the iPhone 13 mini just after release and got the iPhone 14 Pro after the 13 mini.
Since the 15 Pro wasn't really enough to update for me, and I still had a little hope for a new iPhone mini, I waited for the iPhone 16 Pro release. But when I saw, that it got heavier again (than the iPhone 15 Pro) I couldn't hold myself and bought an iPhone 13 mini again.
Will I miss the third camera lens? Maybe.
Will I miss 120Hz? Even more maybe.
Am I excited to got back to the 13 mini? YES.
I just miss the feeling of the lightness and being able to use it with just one hand.

The 14 Pro made the decision easy. If I have had the 15 Pro instead, maybe I would not consider it to go back again (the round edges combined with 20 gram less weight makes it feel much better in the hand than the 14 Pro).
But then it is still just to big for me, that's why I am happy to go back again to the 13 mini. Even bought the same color again :)

Going from a mini to a PM is fully feasible depending on ”needs”, all due to change of personal preferences, it have to be really worth it though. After having the X I had the 12mini and the 13mini, but with new work I got a base 13 to do more things on the phone efficiently as well as traveling. As lovely as the mini is it’s not good for heavy use. The 13 didn’t cut it either, so ended up with the 14PM for 2y.😬 You can imagine how that ended, just switched to 16P… feels like mini now lol.
Everything is relative.

All true.

For some reason lots of people buy the pro apparently, while not so many people really need the 3rd camera or the 120hz.

For me the base 16 is a good upgrade after the mini, the battery life is great, the weight is good and the bigger screen makes it easier to work with.

I still have the mini for in case i change my mind, but after 1 week with the 16 I don’t think it’s going to happen.

The best thing for me about the mini was that it’s less addictive to use all day. But then I would grab my macbook more often.

I upgraded my 13 mini in February for the 15 Pro. Here’s a comparison of the size difference to the 15 Pro.

I loved the Mini for its pocketability! But, the cameras were a huge upgrade (especially the 3x Tele). I didn’t realize how handicapped I’d been using the 13 Mini’s cameras. I don’t mind the size of the 15 Pro, but I do mind the weight. I feel it every time I pick it up. My GF has the regular 15 and it feels about perfect to me. Very light in comparison.

I’d love it if Apple made another Mini sized phone! I’d consider switching back depending on the spec’s.

I was a strong supporter of mini’s form factor with my 12 mini. After 2 years I upgraded to 14 pro max: bigger and heavier, but battery life, screen size and cameras are big upgrades for me. Sometimes I switch on the 12 mini and I’m now impressed by how difference there is about screen quality.

how about a screenless iPhone Shuffle, just a little nano-sized thing that responds to Siri?

(joking aside, I'd love a screenless Apple Watch)
I’m not a fan of watches so I’ve always wanted Apple to make their version of something like the Nike Fuel Band. I don’t need a full on screen, just some very basic information that can point me to my phone if I need more.

Thanks for the info about the 13 min vs 15 pro camera 👍

I think the weight of the 15 pro is manageable, I own a 2016 SE gen 1

However, coming from an iPhone 13 mini I can also understand your view regarding weight of the iPhone 15 pro (which in my opinion is a lot better than the iPhone 16 pro).

check my thread in sig :)
That’s pretty cool! But not quite what I’m looking for haha. I actually want a wrist worn device, for easy quick glances and haptic alerts, but just more minimal/less bulky than a watch, so more like a sport band. But again, you’re project is very cool 👍

maybe a pebble with rebble?
i know still not a 'screenless' device...

otherwise i know there are some fossil and casio watches that can send notification data and alerts in a very subtle way... might be worthing checking out!

i know this still, still isnt what you want exactly... you might have to DIY this one :)

I think those alternatives don't get rid of enough bulk, but get rid of too much function hahah. Last time I looked into those, the functionality and integration with iPhone was pretty limited. The Apple Watch has much more. I know much of the functionality requires a traditional screen like it has, but I think a decent amount could be translated to a smart band with simple LEDs like the Nike band or maybe a very small narrow traditional screen like some of the sport bands I've seen have.
I don't know how to go about DIY'ing this, looks like I'll just have to "suffer" my Apple Watch until Apple decides to grant my wish.

I’m keeping the pro, actually sent the mini back as trade in yesterday, so it’s settled. Here’s my thinking: the 16 and the 16 pro are essentially the same size, to within such a small margin that you can’t seriously notice it. So the difference is in the weight, with the 16 coming in one ounce less than the pro and one ounce more than the mini. I’d prefer one oz less, but not as much as I’d prefer telephoto, 120hz, and better battery.

I had a 13 mini and have a pro max phone now. To me it’s just what you get accustomed to. They’re not light years different in weight.

Good that you could made a choice :)
I am not a photographer so I wouldn’t need the telephoto.
Just wondering what’s so cool about the 120hz? Do you play games that require it?
In my daily usage (browsing the web, watching youtube) I barely notice it, I compared in the shop and I could notice the smoother animations and scrollong on 120hz but the 60hz doesn’t seem laggy to my eyes.

I have had a 13 Mini since launch and I won't give up the form factor anytime soon. I have a magsafe charger and holder in the car and another wireless holder at the office, I barely have to plug in the phone and the battery life is not an issue.

I am hoping to upgrade to a similarly pocketable foldable iPhone.

I have the same thoughts, but a previous poster gave a warning that a foldable phone [without outside screen] is inconvenient, you have to flip it open every time you want to see directions or see notifications.

I went the other way! 😅I went from a 12 mini, to the 16 pro and finally arrived at the standard 16. The weight of the pro was just too much for me.
