One thing is clear: the next iPhone will not be compatible with existing cases and other size-dependent accessories.

Apple makes a big stink about reaching for carbon neutrality but seems to completely ignore the impact of constantly requiring the ecosystem to be re-purchased in order to maintain compatibility. Even having cases be usable across just two generations would make a significant environmental impact.

It reads like a weak scam to build a false sense of a vibrant third party market.

I agree with this. But then you have the whiners complaining that "nothing changed! it's exactly like last year's model!". Apple just can't win.

Screen protectors are a sham these days, yet so many continue to think they are "needed". They are not.

Maybe it's time for Apple to build a "case-less" phone. Actually build protective, grippable material onto the phone itself so that a case is not needed at all. I can tell you... spending $60 for a piece of plastic and rubber is crazy, but everybody does it because it's "needed". I want to see Apple eliminate that need.

always has been, always will be . I don't think anyone ever believed that **** ever

Yeah, I can’t disagree with that. They get hammered no matter what they do.

Another agree from me.

Yes! Like the original iPhone. It was NOT designed to be in a case. That came later. The current iPhones are obviously predicated on the idea that you’re going to case it.

Maybe when it's possible to fold a glass screen without creasing it or wearing it out...
isnt it already the case with fold 5 ? besides i wasnt critiquing apple for refusing to implement a folding mechanism, i actually agree with them . i jsut despise the size and weight increase

Is anyone really asking for a larger not-max iPhone?
Not only am I asking for it, I demand a screen that is 0.2" bigger!

Not, not really. But I look at these numbers with extreme skepticism. Does even Apple know the final dimensions of the iPhone 16 this early? At this point, even if they've completed the design of all components—cameras, lenses, A18 Pro chip, microphones, speakers, screen, case and frame, etc.—wouldn't they still be tweaking and optimizing how everything fits together and how much space they can free up for a slightly bigger battery?

Wouldn't they be pushing their suppliers to shrink things down just a wee bit more? Conversely, for the exact dimensions and weight to have leaked, wouldn't Apple have already had to know the exact sizes of all those components, including how much space on the logic board the A18 Pro chip will take?

I have no idea what it takes to design and manufacture a phone that will sell in the hundreds of millions, but I doubt even Apple knows what the weight of the next iPhone will be at this point. The most I'd expect them to have decided at this point is something along the lines of "We plan to increase the screen size slightly while maintaining approximately the same size and weight".

I’m sure Apple has iPhones all mapped out for several generations down the road. These products don’t get developed up to the last minute. Chances are the iPhone 16 is already mostly locked down.

Down to the gram? I doubt it. They'll want to cram as much stuff in there as they can, and that depends on how much they, and their partners, can optimize and miniaturize.

For them to know exactly the size and weight of the iPhones 16, 17, and 18, they'd have to decide, "the state of the art today is good enough for the next three years." That's not Apple at all.

Edit: They'd also have to know what their competitors are up to for the next several years, too, to know what they have to compete with.
