6.1 is already too big
I'd beg to differ. I had no issues using my iPhone 12 one handed. It felt light in the hand and had a good overall size.

My 15 Pro Max, on the other hand, is a two handed device that is great to look at but can be cumbersome to use in certain situations.

I stand by my original comment as 6.3 would be a perfect balance of size and weight. You want something small, buy the old Mini.

Maybe some neural prosthetic thumbs. I feel the current pro max size is already maxed out anything larger is a mini tablet and requires a bag/purse and two hands
Another issue with very large phones is that in some cars, they only fit in door pockets.

My 15 Pro is at the limit of the size that I can carry. If the iPhone 16 is larger, then my next iPhone might be an SE that's based on the 14.

MacRumors has obtained preliminary information on the weights and dimensions planned for the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The information corroborates previous reports suggesting that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will feature larger displays.

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus

Current information suggests that the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will maintain the same dimensions as the current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, with the only difference being an increase in weight of around 2 grams for both models – 173g for the iPhone 16, and 203g for iPhone 16 Plus. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be available in the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes as their predecessors.

Regardless of the dimensions, however, the base model iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are expected to feature a redesigned camera bump, with a vertical camera arrangement similar to the iPhone 12. They are also likely to include a capacitive Action button and potentially even an all-new capacitive "Capture Button."

In terms of materials, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus should use the same type of aluminum found on the iPhone 15 chassis, and will also feature matte back glass. The choice of materials is unlikely to have any significant impact on the weight of the devices, with the increase being a consequence of minor design changes.

iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature an increase in display size compared to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, measuring roughly 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively. To be more precise, the iPhone 16 Pro will have a 6.27-inch display (159.31 mm), while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a 6.85-inch (174.06 mm) panel.

This represents a noticeable increase of 0.2 inches for both models. As a result, the dimensions of the device as a whole will increase. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will be slightly taller than their predecessors, while also being somewhat wider. Interestingly, the width of both devices appears to align with their respective iPhone 14-series counterparts, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

As far as materials are concerned, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to maintain the same Grade 5 Titanium used on the iPhone 15 Pro, with the same brushed finish and curved design. Similar to the base model iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Pro is also expected to feature a slightly larger Action Button, and an entirely new capacitive "Capture Button."

It's worth emphasizing that the information presented here is remarkably early. The iPhone 16 lineup is almost a whole year away, and the design is far from being finalized. While changes throughout development are always possible, significant deviations from the dimensions and weights we've listed are unlikely, and the information we've provided represents our best insight into the overall size of the iPhone 16 lineup.

Here is my prediction... the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will for the first time feature 120hz ProMotion screens (years overdue) thanks in fact to the new larger screens on the Pro models which will serve as the new differentiating feature.

if this is just to fit more camera stuff in the pro model I don't want it

well rumors do indicate the new larger size of the iPhone 16 Pro will allow it to get the 5x camera that currently is available only on the 15 Pro Max. the 5X camera is awesome but in practical use it has a major downside... the 3X camera on the 15 Pro (and previous year's Pro models) represents a 77mm focal length that is commonly accepted as the *ideal* focal length for portraits. The new 5X lens is 120mm and requires you to stand much further back for portraits (although if you can do so, it does a great job) and unfortunately if you try to take a 70-80mm range portrait on the current 15 Pro Max it uses the normal 1X main camera and just digitally crops in, and the resulting image quality is INFERIOR to the 3X camera in the regular 15 Pro. There is a very real argument to be made that as great as a 5X or higher zoom lens can be, the utility is far less than having a great mid-range zoom like a 3X 77mm focal length... which now is gone... and will be from ALL iPhone models next year.

Not only am I asking for it, I demand a screen that is 0.2" bigger!

Not, not really. But I look at these numbers with extreme skepticism. Does even Apple know the final dimensions of the iPhone 16 this early? At this point, even if they've completed the design of all components—cameras, lenses, A18 Pro chip, microphones, speakers, screen, case and frame, etc.—wouldn't they still be tweaking and optimizing how everything fits together and how much space they can free up for a slightly bigger battery?

Wouldn't they be pushing their suppliers to shrink things down just a wee bit more? Conversely, for the exact dimensions and weight to have leaked, wouldn't Apple have already had to know the exact sizes of all those components, including how much space on the logic board the A18 Pro chip will take?

I have no idea what it takes to design and manufacture a phone that will sell in the hundreds of millions, but I doubt even Apple knows what the weight of the next iPhone will be at this point. The most I'd expect them to have decided at this point is something along the lines of "We plan to increase the screen size slightly while maintaining approximately the same size and weight".
At some point there were reports that the development of a new iPhone model starts about two years before release. (This is probably also why we got the iPhone 13 mini despite immediate poor sales of the 12 mini. It was already too late for Apple to change plans for the next lineup.) Suppliers need to plan and prepare for production in the required quantities, so the design needs to be the finalized at least half a year if not more before release. So it’s not completely surprising that they might already have fixed the dimensions now. We’ve already had rumors about the size increase half a year ago or so.

Great news. The iPhone 17 or 16s will be epic, as long as they don't use FineWoven titanium or some other bizarre sh*t.

hopefully they bring 120hz to the regular 16 and i can just stop buying the pro model

It’s weird I keep hearing this on Macrumors when so many professional photographers say their favorite portrait lenses are 135mm’s. The best portrait lens ever made is probably the 200mm f2 ($$$$).

Anyways, I’d bet 99% of people don’t use their phones for any sort of professional portrait photography anyways, the 120mm lens is so much more useful than the 77mm lens. What Apple should do in the future is add a 4th sensor and lens to the back of the camera that is around 85mm and then that will give them the leeway to punch that 120 out over 200.

The 16 has to be pretty much finalized fairly soon. Parts suppliers have to know the specs that Apple wants so they could produce and plan their production lines. The iPhone is not the only product these suppliers are producing for. Then there is a FCC inspection and all that.

iPhone 15 isn’t even done rolling out and we’re already seeing articles about 16? Yes I get it that technology continuously advances, but how about we take time to enjoy what we have now for a while before looking forward to the next model year? Isn’t speculation on what is a year away a little early?

I agree with this. But then you have the whiners complaining that "nothing changed! it's exactly like last year's model!". Apple just can't win.

Screen protectors are a sham these days, yet so many continue to think they are "needed". They are not.

Maybe it's time for Apple to build a "case-less" phone. Actually build protective, grippable material onto the phone itself so that a case is not needed at all. I can tell you... spending $60 for a piece of plastic and rubber is crazy, but everybody does it because it's "needed". I want to see Apple eliminate that need.
I think of the 15 as that, caseless. I have a case for those times when I’m working in a particularly nasty industrial environment, but otherwise haven’t put my 15 pro in a case for more than a few minutes to test the fit. The brushed titanium and rounded edges are what did it for me, I haven’t gotten the outrageous fingerprints I got on the polished sides of the 14 pro and it’s reasonably comfortable to hold.

Down to the gram? I doubt it. They'll want to cram as much stuff in there as they can, and that depends on how much they, and their partners, can optimize and miniaturize.

For them to know exactly the size and weight of the iPhones 16, 17, and 18, they'd have to decide, "the state of the art today is good enough for the next three years." That's not Apple at all.

Edit: They'd also have to know what their competitors are up to for the next several years, too, to know what they have to compete with.

Yeah. Exactly. If Apple isn’t at least 4 - 5 years out in front they’re in trouble. And I didn’t say “down to the gram.”

Don’t read MacRumors then. This is not new, it happens every year.
