Who is this for???

They have alienated:
- the small form-factor crowd
- the price conscience crowd
- the MagSafe crowd
- and even the "will only buy Qualcomm modem" crowd

I am beginning to think Apple doesn't actually want to sell these and they are priced to convince people to spend a little bit more on the 16 instead.

But with a 3rd party case, it still has to be somewhat compatible with MagSafe, just without full charging speeds and find my support for their wallet.

You might have nailed it.

You can by a used iPhone 14 Pro 256Gb with a brand new battery for €679. The 16e same spec (storage btw) is €859. You would need to be crazy to make this deal.

The cases for it don't have MagSafe either. On a brighter note, they did bring back the white silicone case color. Hopefully they'll bring that color option to the other iPhone 16 models' silicone case options.

The iPhone 10 had Qi support. Those who had it might remember the support wasn't very widespread with many vendors making charging pads of often dubious value. MagSafe was the missing piece with the iPhone 12, and it took years for that to be instituted to Qi2 when Apple contributed the tech. With the 16e, you can probably stick it into a case that has MagSafe/Qi that provides the same practical support as MagSafe built in to the phone. After all, you can't exactly misalign the coil and magnets if they were built for the case that snugly covers the back of the phone.

Didn't know Magsafe is really such a thing over there. I don't even know a single person using wireless charging for a phone at all.

they would recoupn the MagSafe cost on sold accessories. Kind of short sighted in my opinion.
This - why would they cut off this model from their Magsafe ecosystem. I'm sure Apple makes a larger percentage profit on Magsafe cases and wallets than it does on phones. This way iPhone 16e owners won't be buying any of those Apple accessories...

That's ... stage. A cheep magnetic sticker, added by the end user, is all it takes to add MagSafe to a pre-MagSafe iPhone! The end user can add MagSafe, and Apple can't?

Assuming a case supplier could make a case with magnets in the right position and then the phone could work with MagSafe chargers? Perhaps not at the fastest charge speeds, but MagSafe chargers are Qi compatible, right?
I basically turned my SE3 into MagSafe phone by sticking a Snap grip on it, albeit with slower Qi1 charging. I think this cheap magnet ring adapter from ESR will do the same.

Yay! I have a relative hanging onto an iPhone 11 because they are concerned about MagSafe interfering with their pacemaker. Some Medtronic representative
I understand We are all different. In my case, I have never had any issues. I have had a pacemaker since 2021. iPhone 12 Pro Max 2020
