Frankly, I'm not a fan of MagSafe, because it tends to heat up the phone quite a bit, which will shorten the usable life of the battery pack itself. That's why on my iPhone 16 Plus, I use USB 3.x PD charging through the Type C port, and the charging speed is quite good even with a 20 watt charger.

Curious to why most people would care about this when they use a case anyway? A simple add-on magnetic ring or a case with built in magnet ring solves the issue. I don't use cases but whenever there's a discussion about using phones naked it seems like we are the rare and crazy ones so the majority of users must be using a case?

Lol wut? Apple couldn’t spare the $0.0001 it probably costs to put in a few magnets?

Us: it will be a new SE4. It will have this and this. I bet they will also release MacBook Air M4. Cook’s tweet looked like an AirTag… I bet new AirTags. Maybe even a HomePad device!

Reality today: New budget phone that is $170 more than the last budget phone and has no MagSafe.

Cook: lol

Cook: If you want to buy this phone, first you have to bark like a doggy! Good doggy! Bark Bark!

They had to do extensive market research on this but was not expecting above $500 and missing magsafe which will cost them on accessories

Although the lack of MagSafe is unfortunate, for most folks it doesn’t matter anyway since they put cases on their device and as such the magnet inside the phone is completely irrelevant - since the magnet in the case is the one that matters. The 16e does support slow wireless charging.

So, if your use case is say that you want magnetic attachment in the car while keeping the phone topped off while using it with a little bit of charging going on then as long as you use a MagSafe case for the 16e then you’ll be OK.

If you go in Spigen’s website for example, they already have a bunch of MagSafe cases available to preorder for the 16e.

This is a fair point but I don't use a case. I briefly considered buying the iPhone 16E today when I saw that it's shorter in length than the 16 but the lack of MagSafe ended that idea. I may have to replace the battery in my 13 mini while I wait for the 17 series. C'est la vie.

Magsafe is such a good way to mount your phone to your car dash, instead of having to use those cheap squeaky plastic claw things.

I never thought about this. Have you or anyone confirmed that this is an actual possible interaction for sure? But, if I had a pacemaker and heard that from the manufacturer, I probably wouldn't want to chance it. I would guess that it isn't as severe as the reps might have said, just based on it being released without any warnings - at least none that I've seen.

Modern (post 2000?) pacemakers enter into a special mode in the presence of a strong magnetic field - a safety mode in case the patient finds themselves inside an MRI. I don't know what exactly occurs in MRI safe mode - when I asked it seems to maintain a certain fixed baseline rhythm while in the MRI and not try and use its sensors to adjust what the heartrate should be, since the inputs might be wrong while in the MRI. Once out of the MRI they can send a command to go back into normal profile - some pacemakers bluetooth to configure, others you place a device over the pacemaker to program it through the skin.

So the issue is, lets say you fall asleep with an iPad on your chest and your iPad case has magnetic clasps. Could the clasp if positioned just right put you into MRI safe mode?

When one of my parents had a pacemaker recently installed, the pacemarker company representative let us place phones, ipads, cases with magnets, etc.. above their pacemaker while they monitored it - and nothing happened. But I have other relatives who don't want to risk it. The pacemaker company representative allowing that experimentation while still inside the hospital really assuaged my parent's fears.

There is conflicting info out there:

Assuming a case supplier could make a case with magnets in the right position and then the phone could work with MagSafe chargers? Perhaps not at the fastest charge speeds, but MagSafe chargers are Qi compatible, right?
Actually looks like Spigen is already offering 2 different cases for the 16e and a "MagFit" ring in the case. Given that most people put a case on their phone anyway, they really rarely use the actual magnets Apple puts in the phone. It's a pity that the Qi charging is slower speed, but in a budget phone, this is probably a good compromise.

I don't think no MagSafe is a dealbreaker in general, but it is a dealbreaker for me. Most people here in Mexico don't even know MagSafe exists, and I'd assume the main market for the 16e is emerging markets.

That said, the extra 100 bucks is what ruins it. I mean, if you're budget conscious you could get a refurb 15 Pro for not that much more, a refurb 15 for a bit less, even a 14 Pro for much less.

No UltraWide Band makes it worse than my 11Pro, lol. What do you do Apple?

By upgrading I would lose better detection of my AirTags and AirPods.

Same wireless charging speed and cable data transfer speed in 2025

Interesting, that would be a deal breaker for me.
It was for me. I was marginal on this phone until I saw that.

Now I'm sticking with my old iPhone SE and returning the Apple MagSafe charger I bought for a non-MagSafe after-market brand that works just as well.

Better, really, since it's somewhat bigger around than the phone I can more-easily see alignment—which I can't at all with the little MagSafe puck.
