hm... should I just risk doing the install? i guess if i have a problem I can use my old iPhone...

There are two groups of people who should install it.

1) Developers who are actively designing apps for the iPhone and want to test compability.

2) 12 year old boys who can't control themselves for 5 minutes to get some incremental release on their phone that probably will be a big bunch of nothing...

has anybody noticed network loss on 3.1? I'm with officially unlocked 3G, in Kazakhstan and noticing loss of network every 2-3 minutes... then updated again and for got teh UDID, now trying to hunt it down from somewhere...
*raisedhand

update:
udid already in system...
and now it did work... probably was just server down and now network losses are gone also after second installation... how strange.
*lowerhand

update:
by restoring my old settings the network losses are back again...

Need to file a bug for this but I've had multiple times where I have my headphones in watching a video @ night, stop it, hit done and quit the app, then when I remove the headphones from the jack the iPod app starts playing some song through the speaker phone. Great when your wife wakes up from it. Anyone else have this happen?

What happend if you sleep the phone prior to pulling the headphones out?

3.1 on 3GS, apps open very fast, smooth scrolling, even dogs like NY Times app doing much better. MMS pic sending faster, camera seems to take sharper pics under bad lighting. So far very stable.

We'll know in a couple of days if power management has improved.

Baseband Upgrade

I saw that the baseband is upgraded to 05.08.01...does this apply to all iPhones (2G, 3G and 3Gs) or which? And if not all what are the others basebands? I did read the thread but I never saw which phones the baseband update apply to.

This is what I hate about other Apple users - when an upgrade is available and Apple slap existing customers by locking out extremely basic software features, they act like its a hardware thing. We've been using the 3G for a year, and it wasn't so utterly incompetent then. There's an upgrade and suddenly nobody could possibly have done anything on a 3G because it wasn't powerful! You guys should work for the Ministry of Truth.

Yes, but on a 2G and 3G its not very accurate, at least according to an engineer I spoke to at Apple not too long ago. Just because it can be done, doesn't mean that it works properly.

I'm sure the 2G and 3G can handle it. After all, there's a battery API to get the percentage and the iPhone OS uses percentages internally to choose images and display the 20% warning.

Not going to happen. Its a hardware feature of the 3GS, using a real DSP that does not physically exist on your 2G/3G. Esp not on the 2G whose audio recording bitrate is subpar.

No. Voice control is not a hardware feature. There are so many ways you're wrong.

To get back to the thread topic: I won't be upgrading because I'll lose the ability to unlock and there's nothing new of any use in here. The API changes are minor and obscure and won't break current apps, so there's no reason for developers to upgrade for compatibility testing. It looks like this update was released to update the baseband and nothing more.

You can finally copy and paste info in Contacts! (Before you had to hit "Edit" then click the number to edit it, and copy it that way)

Also, you can now paste phone numbers into the Phone app to dial:

Neither of these are in 3.0, I checked on my other phone.

well

Can I install 3.1 beta in iTunes with option+ restore, or install it in xcode (sdk 3.1beta)?

are you a SDK developer? and have you registered and paid $99 if so then you should have received a email about the Beta. Other wise you'll have to wait like me it's not a official release you might find it some where as a torant but I just wait the actual release shouldn't be that far off... ;)

I have iPhone SDK developer account, but can't find the right procedure. Will have a look when I'm back home from my school exam.

Agreed. Maybe "Replace File" and "Save as New File" or something.

Actually - the better thing to do would be to always just internally save as the full file plus a hidden file that contains the start and end points. Then, when "sending," you could be asked to send the original or the edited version.

I already submitted a report to Apple with this mockup. Hope it helps :)

its not just Word, save means save. Unless you protect the original you are saving on top of it. The "save" command works like this universally (even on your c1978 TRS)

BTW- The iphone is a computer.

The iPhone may technically be a computer, but the average everyday user sees it as a phone. It can never hurt to be more user-friendly and not confuse the user. This phone wasn't made for you, it was made for everyone.

See my mockup I just posted.

Nice, but why would anybody want to cut and paste a phone number to the keypad when simply holding down a phone number anywhere will trigger the call the number option?

two things i'm looking for:

1. have option to turn off landscape keyboard - i am used to portrait keyboard, and sometimes the landscape keyboard gets in the way, like you lay on your side to send an email or text and automatically switches to landscape

2. enable voice control for 2G and 3G, maybe even have a price of $5-$10, it seems so literal.

Well, I submitted a report to Apple saying that there should be a feature called "View Lock" which allows you to lock the view you're currently in. The trick is figuring out a way to enable it on the fly.

A few methods have been proposed including a home button triple-click or holding down both volume buttons simultaneously.

3.0 is nowhere near a disaster.
It is working fine without any problems here to both my 3G and 3GS so lets not label minor bugs a disaster os.
You want to talk about disaster talk about 2.0, that was a nightmare.

I didnt have any problems with 2.0 and i really dont with 3.0 asside from i cant backup anything in iTunes now but many others are having some problems. Maybe it ws a bad choice of a word, but still....they arent working on 3.1 already for no reason.

That was published awhile ago. Its going "live" september. But some towers and areas already have the towers online. Just no one can use it yet as telus doesn't sell GSM phones until september.

If any of those towers are online the iPhone will be able to pick up the signal, not necessarily access it, but it will see it.

Great catch!! That's awesome. I submitted that issue to Bug Reporter, looks like it helped :)

Can somebody please check if you are now able to save videos received through mms? I know that you are able through email... thanks
