Captain Obvious...has arrived!

Copy a number from a site to send to a friend who doesnt have an iphone and cant look up the number!

This is not about copying from A SITE. Copying a number from a site has always been possible in 3.0. The post you are replying to (and failing) was about why would you want to copy a number from the CONTACTS and paste it in the keypad field.

My personal guess is that let's say you would like to add some code or edit it for some reason before dialing. Anyway, more options is a good thing.

That's what I wanted to hear! Awesome news! I know I shouldn't be excited about something that all other flip phones have, but it's effectively the one thing that I made me unsure about switching to an iPhone and now I can have my hands free dialing in the car back again. Hooray!

Agreed. If Voice Control through Bluetooth is part of this update, it'll be worth installing for me even if it's the only new feature.

I find it strange that the states are so far behind Europe in technological development. SMS has been available for about 15 years in europe, and mms for 5-7 years? Why is both of these features kind of new in USA?

It's not so much that the features are new, but the US had free local calling for a long time (which Europe did not), so when cellphones were introduced there was both an expectation and a social convention of cheap/free calling. On the other hand, Europe had very high telephone charges (including local calls), so the comparatively low cost of SMS really helped it to take off socially.

Of course, add to the fact that the CDMA handsets in the US were even more retro than the European models, making typing on numeric keypads that much harder.

Side note*— I still laugh when I visit the US and see mobile phones with ANTENNAS on them :) I think the last GSM phone made with a retractable antenna in Europe was around 2001!

But you can Copy a phone number from Contacts now. Try it in 3.1. The reason for Copy/Paste in Dialpad is mainly so you can "Copy" the number in the dialpad to paste it somewhere else; not to Paste even though you can.

How are you copying a phone number from the contacts app? Every time I try to do that my iPhone calls the number.
I can only share contacts by email.

Since installing 3.0 from a clean restore, my iPhone 3G has been somewhat buggy. It takes much longer to boot up. Many applications that used to be stable (especially Mail) crash frequently. I like the new features, but the phone's stability seems to have been compromised.

no it really wont work, you have to have your phone registered on a dev account or you CANT activate it

Its funny that people keep on saying things like this because the beta installed on my 3G S and I assume activated fine even though I didn't register my new phone until after it successfully upgraded. No pink screen. Nothing.

Please my a I remind you, this "beta" build is designed for DEVELOPERS, if you are not a developer in any way this is not for you.

I'm having alot of this too, 3.0.1 seemed inevitable after seeing how 3.0 has performed on my phone
Mail crashes all the time, i can almost make it crash whenever i want to if it's polling my mailboxes while i rotate the phone into landscape or portrait

New features are always welcome tho *cough*mms*cough*

Why do people say this? Because Apple's policy has always enshrouded iPhone OS betas in a cloak of secrecy. Every beta since 2.0 has required a Dev account and registered device to run one of the betas (except the 3.0 GM). If you were able to install, I'd count yourself as lucky.

It isn't about copying a number to paste in the dialer.

It's about copying a number to SMS/Email to someone. Or copying an address from one contact to send to another. Or one email address to SMS to a friend. etc.

Look in the Address Book. There are already options to text or email contact details, so you don't need copy & paste.

I just did a clean restore a few days ago. Has improved things the most as far as battery life goes but still needs a lot of work. Can't wait till 3.1 comes out. Although my gut feeling is it's going to coincide with whenever AT&T gets their act together with MMS in a couple months, although that's just a guess.

Well apparently there is a bug because some of us can upgrade without our phones needing to be registered. Therefore his post is not true.

In the video trim screen, the buttons should be "Save" and "Save As" .. most people know what they mean.

Actually, on the computer, Save As… and Save a Copy… both mean something slightly different.

Save As… means save this file with a new name, so that after saving what is open is the newly saved file; the previous file is now unlinked from this document window.

Save a Copy… means save this file with a new name, but after saving the window should still be linked to the old file; the newly saved copy is from then on ignored by the app.

Both are part of the standard open/save terminology of the MacOS.

No! It's not happening. There's a real reason that it's exclusive to the 3GS. Do you think they thought it would sell extra 3GS units if they left it out on older models? No! They did it for a real reason that still applies. I was misled contantly by the battery icon on my 3G when I had it. I can't imagine how misleading an actual number would be on that device.

Not to get off topic, but I have a percentage value for my battery on my 3G (non-S) and my wife doesn't. My phone is not Jailbroken anymore, yet I get it and she doesn't. I don't know what the criteria is, but it doesn't seem to be a 3G S feature.

There's a setting to turn on the battery percent on the 3GS. Do you have it turned on?

Could anyone post a 3.1 homescreen please ? I heard the icons on the dock have a shadow..

Agreed. If Voice Control through Bluetooth is part of this update, it'll be worth installing for me even if it's the only new feature.

I missed the previous discussion on this, so - sorry if this is rehashed - but what angers me about Voice Control right now is that it is not available to 3G owners. It's available only for 3GS owners. If the update corrects this, that's a start.

I'm still waiting to hear why Apple doesn't understand the need for truly hands-free use of the phone. Even with VC on the 3GS, you still have to physically access the phone; press and hold the HOME button to activate it. I suppose there just isn't anyone at the very innovative Apple laboratories wearing jawbone headsets or using BlueAnt speakers in their cars. Brilliant.

I have heard that the 3GS doesn't even pair with the BlueAnt.

Some things I would love to see in this update:

- the ability to save an mms video that is recieved

- the ability to cancel a text as it is sending, this was in the early beta in 3.0

- the ability to choose the picture quality size sending an mms video, right now the quality of video being sent stinks

-the ability to directly select media to add to an email, right now you have to select the photos first

Nice, but why would anybody want to cut and paste a phone number to the keypad when simply holding down a phone number anywhere will trigger the call the number option?

Easy, Post-Cut-Through Dialed Digits. :)

1) VC for iPhone relies on a DSP chip in the 3GS. You are right, the iPhone 3G should be able to be coded to handle voice dialing. After all, most crappy flip phones do. But the current implementation is based on a hardware feature not available on the 3G.

2) As noted, in the 3.1 beta, you can now use your BT headset to both initiate VC and say a voice command for dialing or playing, therefore becoming a true handsfree phone in the car. Should this have been there in 3.0? Yes. Was it planned as a update all along? My guess is yes...they ran out of time and planned on full implementation later on down the line. The good news is at least we are getting it.

Regarding your last point, you can start an email and copy&paste your photos into it as an when you need to.

3G/Edge not working since update

Hi

I've updated to 3.1 on my iPhone 3G 16GB, and I now cannot connect to the Internet using 3G or Edge. Wifi is fine.

I've checked the settings and everything seems ok - anyone having similar problems?

Justin
