so what exactly is this "trap" you fell into?

It was a trap I laid out by my own stupidity because I didn't read the thread thoroughly before putting 3.1 on my iPhone 3GS. If I had, I would have known that I would have to register the UUID with an Apple developer account. And you can't downgrade because 3.1 introduces a new baseband firmware. Totally my own fault, and I consider the $105 a "stupidity tax". :p

I am having issues with messaging. I tried texting a number that called me today but it left off the area code when it switched to messaging. I also added it as a new contact and it also didn't copy the whole number? I even edited the contact and it still screwed it up.

I have the same problem

Apple sucks.

This is their 3rd generation phone and millionth OS release and they still cannot get something simple like SMS and MMS working.

WTF

... That's why I went back to 4.0. I kept the 5.0 file in case I have to go somewhere where wifi isn't readily available, I can load the 5.0 file, tether until I'm done, then reload 4.0.
AFAIK, you do not have to have tethering always on. The internet and email worked fine on my phone with tethering turned off. You only need it on when you want internet access from a computer through the iPhone...

Yeah, this is what Im gonna end up doing too. Im starting a road trip tomorrow so ill do this technique. Otherwise, I would probably rarely use tethering.

Um, it's AT&T that sucks not Apple. MMS works fine on other networks. With the right hacks and luck it works on AT&T too.

Just UPDATED my 3.0 3GS with AT&T 5.0 and it couldn't hold a signal. I'm restoring completely now and hoping AT&T 4.2 will fare better.

UPDATE:
Restored to 3.1 with AT&T 4.2 and it holds a signal fine now :)

Don't restore, just reload the 4.0 file.

You have to do it through iTunes, just like when you loaded the modified 5.0 carrier file. Don't worry about deleting the 5.0 file, just load the 4.0 right over it and restart your phone.

Download the 4.0 carrier file attached to this post. Don't worry, it's safe, I got it from this thread:

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't believe 4.0 includes MMS options though, so I went with the restore to get 4.2 and keep my camera icon in messages. I get my MMS working from time to time, so I like to have that option there.

My network fully supports MMS on my iPhone and it works very well indeed.

We have 4 networks carrying the iPhone and you can buy them outright, unlocked from Apple directly.

Sounds like the arrangement in your country sucks.

iPhone to iDrive

Does anyone know if the BT revisions in 3.1 will allow my 3G to talk to my BMW iDrive? It did prior to OS 3.0 but ever since the update the contacts will not transfer, the calls drop and the sound quality is terrible

I have tried all the various remedies in various forums but nothing seems to work. Now that people have had success with BT ear pieces, I'm hoping that the data transfer is now more reliable.

I've currently had to go back to using my trusty old Sony Ericsson K800i for my business phone but love my 3G which I've only had a month (before 3GS Grrrr).

Cheers JM

You have to admit though it's kind of embarassing watch the iPhone 3G2 commercials. "Introducing the new iPhone. Now with VIDEO!!!!!"

Wow!!! Video!!! Something that's been on smart phones for over 5 years now!!!

Or, "Introducing the new iPhone. Now with Copy/Paste!!!!!"

Wow!!! Copy/Paste!!! Something that's been on smart phones for over 10 years now!!!

I don't really care how long those features have been on other phones.
They're now finally on a phone that's good!

Oh and what is the main distinguishing factor of the Palm Pre: multitasking. That has been on Windows Mobile phones (and more recently Android phones) since the beginning of times. How dare they make a fuss about that, how terribly embarassing must that be

It isn't only the feature, it's also how it's executed ;).

Besides a lot of people wanted an iPhone because of its revolutionairy UI and other features, but they were put off by the lack of copy-and-paste en video-recording. Now, they are made aware that they don't have to miss out anymore.

This idea, but more!

Have any of you devs heard or seen evidence that Apple is considering a "Location Profiles" option? I've suggested this via Apple's feedback, but I've never read any discussion about it, anywhere. What I mean is I'd like the ability to define my network preferences for 2 or 3 locations so I can easily switch. For instance, "Home" for me would be WiFi on, 3G off. "Out" would be WiFi off, 3G on. I'd like the ability to do this easily instead of navigating through the Settings screens.

I have also thought about this idea too - this would really help power management. I don't want the iPhone to be grabbing my Mail all day when I am getting at my desk at work for example. So rather than just power, I would like to be able to tell it to switch to 'Manual' fetch in my work location, but perhaps keep things like App Push notifications on.

However, this concept is ripe for an Apple take on things, and I think they should make this a location based service (mobile network / GPS specified location). So when you get to the office, instead of you setting a 'profile', your iPhone knows it is there and selects the suitable profile. When you then move from there it goes to 'mobile' profile (perhaps everything turns on then), and then when you get home it switches to Wifi only perhaps.

The only concern here would be the power draw on determining your location constantly (or perhaps this is a user settable option - every hour or 30 mins or something). With 'Find my iPhone' I assume this uses a push message to the phone, which in turn fires up the innards to gather the location and then send it back to the cloud. I am not sure how the location monitoring could be done sparingly to make this idea viable for power management.

Get on this Apple boffins!

I realize, why so many people who ARE NOT devs downloaded 3.1 and installed it on their phone, they thought BETA was an acronym, BETA - BECAUSE EVERYONE TRUSTS APPLE, IT REALLY BUGGY EVENLY THROUGHOUT APPLICATIONS.. :D

Can anyone verify if 3.1 addresses some bluetooth compatibility issues with wireless headphones such as the Sony Ericsson HBH-IS800?

I was wondering what this means:

By installing iPhone OS 3.1 beta
software on your Authorized Test Devices, these Devices are permanently
“locked” into testing mode and cannot be restored to an earlier release of
iPhone OS. Bear this in mind before installing the beta software. Devices will
be able to continue to upgrade forward to future bversion of iPhone OS 3.1.

So does this mean if I update I will always have a phone "locked" as dev phone? When the final 3.1 comes out what happens then, will it reset the "lock" ?

If your iPhone`s UDID has been added to a Developer account, you can update with 3.1. But as fare as I know you wont be able to downgrade to 3.0.
What this means is that when the 3.1 beta 2 comes you can update and when 3.1 final comes, you can update.

Exactly correct.

Internet access

I have the same problem as a bunch of you. After upgrading to 3.1 beta I have no internet access over cellular (wifi works fine). I installed a custom ipcc for Telia (Sweden) to get tethering in 3.0 betas, I suspect somehow it is incompatible with 3.1 beta. Phone won't restore (as expected - no downgrades)... I have downloaded a profile for Telia, didn't help. Any ideas? A bit desperate now...

i had the AT&T carrier file 5.0 when i upgraded to the 3.1 beta. When i look on my phone i saw that i still was running the 5.0 file instead of the 4.2. Any Idea? If i downgraded to the carrier file 4.0 and then updated again to 3.1 beta, will that change the settings to 4.2??
