Some time ago I swapped my O2 contract number only an O2 payg sim. It was as simple as calling them up and telling them that's what I wanted to do. They just took the serial number of the PAYG sim over the phone and did it all straight away. I think the number change actually occured overnight or sometime soon after. It wasn't instant.

I think the reason I did it was something to do with ending a contract and not having to write a letter and give 30 days notice.

Yes, I think the procedure is probably much simpler if the number transfer is not cross-network.

Cross-network transfers certainly require a PAC Code and the transfer to O2 normally take 5 days IIRC.

If anybody wants to know about porting:

Usally PAYT to contract porting can be done within 1hr (Depending on network delays).

Porting from network to network does require a PAC code and it takes 2 working days to port. Your previous network by law need to provide you with a PAC within 48hrs of request and PAC codes are valid for 30days.

Did anyone get a definitive answer from Apple about whether upgrade-eligible 2G iPhone owners will be able to upgrade at the Apple Store now or whether we still have to go to O2?

I have been told (twice, once in-store and once on the phone) by the Birmingham Bullring store that I can upgrade in-store on Friday morning. (My 18month 1st gen iPhone contract expired last month.) I plan to check this again Thursday afternoon.

I plan to get there before they open at 8am. If they can't upgrade me, I hopefully will have enough time to get to the O2 store by 9:02.

So is it possible to purchase the PAYG phone in store (Apple, O2 or CPW) without being forced to activate the sim there and then? Since I plan to use a simplicity sim, I'd like to just pick it up off the shelf, pay and leave.

If thats not possible, I guess I'll order from the online Apple store.

I've seen plenty written about how you can transfer a number from PAYG to contract but if I bought a PAYG on Friday could I get a PAC code to transfer my current contract number to the PAYG sim and then simply cancel the contract in July? That would seem to be the easiest option, but I'm not sure they are keen transferring people's numbers from contract to PAYG!

Changing phones shouldn't be this complicated!
The easiest thing for you will be to forget the PAYG SIM altogether and simply use your existing SIM in the "PAYG iPhone" you get (there's actually no difference whatsover between a "PAYG iPhone" and a "contract iPhone" - it's only the SIM they give you along with the boxed iPhone that is different). Come 28th July you can either allow your current contract to continue (it will do so on a one-monthly basis), or switch to Simplicity to save money / get more mins & texts - that will definitely be more cost effective than switching to PAYG unless you use virtually no mins or texts.

When you buy on PAYG they just give you the iPhone in a box and a PAYG SIM - that's basically it. They leave it to you to connect it up to iTunes and activate.

Call O2 on 08442 020202 to speak to a sales advisor.

sorry, just to be clear i won't be able to just order one online signing up to a new contract? im at work from 8am, can't dial out so web is the only way to order one on friday :(

Hmm, Apple Trafford Centre have just told me that they can upgrade me instore but only if I cancel my existing contract, get a PAC code then take out a new contract so effectively it isn't an upgrade at all! Liverpool One didn't answer the 'phone...

I have a Sony Ericsson phone at the moment though so I'm on a "normal" tariff, would I not get hit for data use by not being on an iPhone tariff?

I use very few minutes each month - sometimes none at all - which is what made me think about PAYG. I do a bit of texting, but not hundreds each month.

Sorry to be a muppet but...i want an iphone 3gs, currently not on o2, can i just wait til friday log onto o2.co.uk and order one online or do i have to go in store?

I really don't know the answer to this because at the moment, as far as I can see, there is only the facility to order the 3G on the O2 site.

Presumably, by Friday this will change and you will be able to place an order online, but with O2 you never know.

How about a pre-order online with CPW?

Hmm indeed... this is why I still have my doubts about what the Bullring store told me!

But are you sure they understood that you were a 1st gen iPhone owner and that your 18month contract had expired? Most of the upgrade focus has been on 3G owners with a few months or more to run - their situation is, shall we say, more complicated:rolleyes:

I've got my pre-order placed with Mobiles.co.uk

Just got an email/txt saying it was 'out of stock' rang them straight away (as they do say 'guaranteed dispatch for the 19th') spoke to a nice lady who said they'll will defiantly been sent out and it was an automated email.

Got help them if they mess me about tho :)

ive heard bad things about cpw so wanted to go direct with o2.

your only going to hear bad things about CPW on here. You will never hear of the the people that had great customer service as there will be no need to be on here.

Another words try them out, they may surprise you!

Yeah, I was very clear about that. To muddy the waters further, I finally got through to Liverpool One who said that they were "definitely doing the upgrade process on Friday".

</me bangs head repeatedly against wall>

Ah well, it'll be Friday night before I can get to the shops so they'll probably have sold out anyway!

Let us know if you hear any more...

The Bullring store did say they were expecting a LOT of stock and would not sell out... I think there will be (a lot?) more 3GSs on Friday than there were 3G phones when it launched, and the demand is probably (much?) lower, so you should be OK getting one in the evening.

I'm hoping that more details about the AppleStore upgrade process might emerge on here over the next couple of days...

has anyone sent there 3g's to them?? (not 3gs lol)
is it really 3 days and the moneys in your bank???

Hi
I'm waiting on the envelope to send mine to envirofone.com .. they will give £220 in Argos vouchers (which we can use over time!) for the 16GB 3G iPhone ... or you can choose to take £206 cash/cheque ..
I read on a forum (sorry can't remember which as I've read so many!) someone who had sent phones to them in the past and it was all fine ..

CPW have tended in the past to use aggressive sales tactics and to sometimes give biased (or even incorrect) advice.

However, they're now in the process of stopping paying commission to their sales assistants, so they may now be starting to give better advice and service, and actually focusing on responding to their customers' needs rather than saying and doing anything to get a sale.

I just spoke to O2 Customer Service (again) to see about paying the remainder of my contract and getting a PAC code so I can go to the Apple store on Friday and get a 3G S and still keep my number.

He said that was a lot of unnecessary palava and that the easiest thing was to go to the Apple store, get a new phone and then if I decide to take a contract one just phone them up and they will merge the contracts without me having to cancel my existing one. Or if I go down the PAYG route, I can call and get a PAC then to transfer the number over.

At first I thought he was just trying to get me off the phone without cancelling, but I think he is maybe talking sense. I only have about 6 weeks remaining so even if it doesn't work out then I'll only be having 2 contracts for that period of time which isn't the end of the world.

He also said that I may even be able to simply upgrade in the Apple store, they still hadn't worked out upgrades through Apple and may not know more until Friday itself.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel, but why couldn't they sort all this out beforehand?

Sorry if I've missed this but has anyone had specific confirmation that PAYG 3GS will be available in Apple Stores on Friday?

I'm interested in the Trafford Centre Apple Store in particular.

If you know what you want (iPhone!) then CPW are ok. The error is listening to what they think is best for you. But that can mostly be applied to all non-carrier stores, especially Phones4U...
