In reference to Apple pay: NFC payment has been on Android for the last 2-3 years, maybe even more.

Yet it's been fragmented across the board. When I bought HTC One I was excited to use NFC to make payment but I couldn't even use Google Wallet. At least Apple found a way to make the payment system worldwide acceptance, and have the merchants come on board unlike Google's half-ass attempt. NFC was useless on Android.

The phone hasn't hit the masses and the fanboy is already claiming that Apple did NFC better without ever testing it!

This is what I mean by apple fanboy have a sheep mentality.

Let the device get to the public and put it through its paces before making claims.

Geez.

Given they've negotiated a standard with all major US banks and a large number of retailers, they are already ahead of Google.

The nature of Android vs iOS really drives the difference here. OEMs and carriers can block and change various things about Android making if difficult for Google to push a standard (like Google Wallet).

Apple doesn't allow carriers such control. Apple Pay is baked into the OS and will therefore work the same across all iPhone 6's and 6+'s.

From what I understand googles implementation avoids the need to have individual contracts.

Apple is slated to make fees while ice read google actually loses money on their implementation, though they get data

You claim to be open-minded yet you're trying to provoke offense with words like "sheep". Who sounds like a fanboy?

But avoiding the contracts also means no pressure to actually push rollout and implementation.

I mean how many people are paying via contactless payment and Google Wallet? I know its more popular in other parts of the world, but I'm speaking in the US.

There are come retailers that offer the option, but many still don't. Apple pushing and negotiating with various retailers means other will want to jump on board so as not to miss out on the "free pub".

There's supposedly also a loyalty program in the works for using Apple Pay....it was rumored, but they didn't say anything about it in the keynote.

I'm a fanboy of both OS's but you amongst others, are already claiming that's it's better than Android.

Let it hit the masses, let's put it through its paces. I, myself, will try to pick one up and test it.

To shed some light on my "sheep" comment: if you're so open minded, give both OS's the benefit of the doubt. Don't just sit there and throw claims that Apple did it better without ever testing it. I understand you have some feelings on Android but c'mon.

Ahh, but unfortunately there have been numerous issues that stunt it's growth.

So while one can say "Mobile Payments" in a graphic like this, it really doesn't give me any information on the actual feature.

Wasn't it just last year that Google got around carriers blocking Google Wallet? Various OEMs with their own different iterations of payments....

Apple has negotiated directly with banks and retailers and is pushing this forward. Also, it won't be a coincidence if contactless payments take off in the US as Apple holds a more than 40% marketshare here.

Did they actually solve this problem? My last attempt at using NFC and Google Wallet was with my HTC One (M7) last autumn and it wasn't available as it was blocked by AT&T--had the same issue on the Note 2. I only ever got it to work during the brief time I owned a Nexus 4 and even then, IIRC, is wasn't quick and painless. In fact, the comment from the cashier said it all--'I don't ever remember seeing someone pay like that' and I believe I was at a McDonalds at the time.

I think they solved it on stock Android. I remember having it blocked through AT&T on my Nexus 4, even though I bought straight from Google. But I think my Nexus 5 can get around it.

Similarly, I can get around the AT&T blocking of tethering on an unlimited plan with the Nexus 5.

I tried to use it once at an airport convenience store (of all places), but by the time I got my phone out and tried to use it people were behind me and it didn't just "go". I didn't want to unlock it and jump into the wallet app to see what the deal was so I just paid with my regular card.

Again, though, what good is having no contracts if the payment system actually can't be used? Where's the motivation to adopt it? As it stands, the US carriers 'consortium' restricting anything other than own Softcard (formerly ISIS) is a huge barrier and Google hasn't done anything to change it.

Yes but Android is the worst of all of them.

This. Anyone who denies it is a fanboy, pure and simple. And I'm mostly an Android user myself for the past 3 years!

better to laggy than crash (=ipad air)

and let face some fact. ios apps crash more often than android.

Yup, pretty much same experience I had at McDonald's took like 5 tries to get it through.

But the point is, using Google Wallet to pay wirelessly via NFC has been around for years yet it's adoption has basically been nil. Yes, we need to wait and see if Apple Pay will take off but as you previously mentioned, they've already done far more to try to ensure its success. I really hope it takes off as I hate carrying cards in my wallet.

I've used Google wallet very little but it's worked the few times I have.

Oh god, lol.. You're right.

Can you use the Apple NFC on regular scanners? Probably not.. NFC on Android does more than just payment, you can share files wirelessly; not sure (yet) if iPhone will be able to do that.

Agreed.....

I still think my Coin will come in handy as a backup card. So i can pick up a small money clip with room for my driver's license and coin. That way I don't have any of my physical cards on me, but still have the option to pay via card or Apple Pay.

it takes some time to develope and grow. new payment methods always take years before stores adapt them. is it next year? or year after? people also need to find this new method and get devices to use it.

nfc has been used for years in finland and europe. somehow i dont believe it becomes a hit in couple of years. i believe it needs more time...

You don't need NFC to share on iPhones--Airdrop does the exact same thing, use it all the time to share between my families iOS devices. Even better with iOS 8 and Yosemite, I can very quickly share with my Macs as well.

And yes, it's restricted to Apple devices, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't sharing files/photos via NFC on Android restricted to only Android devices? Don't see either being being different in that regard. Would be nice if we could transfer cross-platform.

Pre-order is this week. Next week is official launch. (Unless you were referencing ordering, in which case nevermind!)

Geez.

I doubt we will see it any time soon in the UK. We are still waiting for iTunes Radio and can only use passbook with a handful of apps.
