Another incentive to get Note7...

samsung-gear-vr.jpg

^ New and improved. Uses the new standard Type-C.

I think VR seems gimmicky BUT it has potential to view my movies and stream Netflix. I hope Gear VR gets bundled for free with a Note7 for a limited time offer. Apple still has nothing for VR. Stick to iPhone if you plan to be stuck in the past with hardware although software support is longer. Get Note7 if you have any foresight with hardware like VR and expandable storage since smartphones are generally media consumption devices anyway. Storage always run out. Think far ahead.

No longer need to watch a crappy or censored movie on the airplane and talk to anymore morons sitting next to me.
Oh Ye forgot to mention it and it comes with the gear fit 2 bundled for free

The biggest example of stepping up their game is the screen to body ratio. if the iPhone 7 comes out with the same ratio as the 6 then its already antiquated, but then the 6 was already antiquated when it was released. You're right about ecosystem, apples ecosystem is a huge detriment for me, but others find it useful.

This thread is a bit inane though, why would you try to decide this before the ip7 is released?

I agree that the ecosystem is a detriment. Nothing that Apple does aside from Music is cross platform. I don't want to be trapped solely in an Apple world. I can take any Android phone on earth and text from a computer with it. Can you do that on any iPhone? I can buy Google Movies and use them anywhere and on any computer, phone or tablet. Can you do that with movies purchased from Apple? I like Apple products a lot, but the ecosystem for me is a problem. And actually one of the things that pulls me more towards Android.

I love how I could get Google Play Music on iOS. Allows me listen to my favorite "Disturbed" album I got for free awhile back.

^ Still looks better than a space black iPhone 7 or in ANY color!

Most important free Samsung goodie to me - 256gb micro-sd card

Don't really care about the watch and tablet. But since AT&T will offer either or, will opt for the tablet. Cost only $180 while the Gear S2 cost nearly $250 but don't care for wearables. The Gear VR is the other important accessory to me. If Apple offered something like that for iPhone 7, I would go to them but this is nearly $500 of free stuff. Plus, I want my VR. If 2015 was all about hoverboards, 2016 is all about VR. The potential to watch movies on it could be amazing....

Apple is stuck in the past. People praising iPhone SE for design while bashing the iPhone 7 sounds so hypocritical to me. I bet iPhone 8 will just be more of the same but in all-glass next year. Samsung is offering stuff we are seeing in Back To The Future Part II. Getting another iPhone in a new design still won't change how you use your phone. Same ol', same ol' after awhile. Getting Note7 + Gear VR might change our way at watching films and TV shows forever.

Do you want to keep using your latest iPhone the same way forever and ever or do you want to support a company who wants to make a dent in this universe right now?

2011 - Note
2012 - Note II
2013 - Note 3
2014 - Note 4, Note edge
2015 - Note5
2016 - Note7

Even though the Note edge introduced us to a curved display, it looked odd being only on one side. So the S6 edge took the Note's glory while the Note5 ended up being ho-hum because it removed features and just didn't look as cool as S6 edge and S6 edge+. The latter is where the S7 edge and Note7 takes alot of its design cues from. Then S7 edge continued the S-line reign. The Note series is back to reclaim its former glory that was held by the S6 edge and S7 edge for nearly 1.5 years. Bye, bye S. Note series is back on top. The Return of the King.

"The future. I gotta check this out, Doc."

No, specs aren't everything in my decision making. Which is why I don't have a phone with a QHD display. It's just that the specs are including key hardware #s and real world usage limitations: 640p displays (iPhone SE), iPhone 6/6S with 750p displays, 12 MP cameras that aren't top notch, batteries that aren't long lasting, measurements that are being blown away by competitors that feature smaller sizes yet bigger battery capacities, a non-flush camera, no VR, no quick charge, no wireless charging.

Apple doesn't offer much. Their "ecosystem" isn't like the Amazon rainforest. It's no longer leaps and bounds better. I bought into it with the iPad, iPhone, and MBP. Didn't offer me enough to stay put.

If value is being determined objectively, the iPhone cannot do much these days. The system exclusives aren't earth shattering. I like iOS 10's features without trying the beta yet, but let's be real, it's not enough to get a redundant iPhone 7/6SE model for $850. What can your phone do that is worth the extra $450 over a OP3 or ZTE Axon? The only somewhat respectably priced iPhone is the SE, yet it's $500 for a 64GB model. Both phones make the same calls, can send the same SMS messages (green ones in this case for those iOS users), take photos at 4K, provide the same social media apps, etc. I will not pay full price for the iPhone 7 or the iPhone 8 unless Apple provides a better product that makes the $ worthwhile. Which is why a lot of folks are dumping the iPhone in the US. It's rightfully so.

Dude makes a great point.

If you're looking at the devices themselves (and not sales and profits), it's hard to deny Samsung is the one pushing the technology more than Apple. It used to be the latter and we had no problem at the time saying the iPhone was the best or the one to recommend. Just to use one example (of many): having the best camera and screen used to mean something for Apple and the iPhone.

This is comment is spot on. And tbh, I can't help but think back to 2010 when the iPhone 4 launched. It basically led the pack and everybody else was playing "catch up" Back then, Apple's device had the best screen, camera, ect. The Retina display push screen tech forward IMO. And Apple fans loved it, instead of saying "the current screen is good enough/nobody needs anything higher or better" Man, how I miss the summer of 2010. The iPhone 4 will always be my favorite iPhone. The hype surrounding that device was amazing. Best phone of 2010 easily

Can't disagree. It was an amazing time to be an iPhone owner in the 4/4s era.

I'm honestly a bit surprised Samsung haven't opened full retail stores, not just glorified kiosks in Best Buys. They have a far more extensive product line--smartphones, tablets, computers, cameras, TVs and monitors, smart home and IOT, appliances and tons of ancillary items like memory/storage. Just focus on electronics and it's a more robust store than what Apple offers. Do it right and Samsung is truly a full fledged competitor to Apple with a full customer service experience. This is the one thing Samsung should copy from Apple.

Probably because Samsung can't do it. It takes a lot of resources both with resources and supply chain to be able to have apple stores with support. Apple does both all hardware and software support. Other than touch wiz (which is still android), Samsung still uses other OS like Windows. As a company for now they rather pass support off to third parties.

Note 7 is my choice.

I've got a tentative delivery date of 8/19 for my pre-order. Normally I'd be buying the iPhone 7 as well since I always carry both the latest Android and iPhone, but nothing about the rather bland iP7 appeals to me.

Actually it'll be refreshing to pass and _not_ give Apple my money this year. Besides they don't need it anyway.

I don't really see a lot of people dumping their iPhones. Actually I just read the iPhone is again selling the best in the US. Most people I believe who are buying the s7 are already android users by the small percentage of reported iPhone users switching.

The note 7 looks really nice. But based on how people here were talking they were thinking it'd be a new processor, 4000+ battery, 6gb ram etc. instead it's the same innards as the edge with a smaller 3500 battery. It has USB c but doesn't support qc3.0. The iris scanner jury is still out as it means you're waking the phone then having to swipe before it'll activate. The fp sensor seems more convenient for now. The 64gb is nice definitely. Still a top tier phone though.

As the iPhone 7 release isn't that far away, I'd wait until it's revealed so you can make your decision based on actual facts instead of rumors alone.
But based on Apple's history and track record of recycling the same old phone over and over, iPhone 7 will be very close to the rumored configuration.

Another predictable copy of the 6 series with Extra Hype added during the release announcement.

I'm planning to buy note 7 when it's up for pre order here but iMessage and notifications on iPhone is making me think more about it.
I have a distinct need to carry two phones daily. So my choice years ago was to use both the latest iPhone and Android phone. For the first few years Android couldn’t match up to the excellent iPhone models.

Fast forward to today where the Android OS in my Nexus 6P has surpassed iOS with its amazing functionality, speed, smoothness and reliability. Even the hardware is just stellar. A beautifully designed aluminum case with comfortable ergonomics and a larger display than my iPhone 6S Plus, it's a testimony to how far Android has come.

Ease of use, fast effective multitasking and immediate updates from Google make the Nexus 6P my number one favorite smartphone of all time.

Sadly, people don't realize that this iPhone will be completely underwhelming to what Apple will be putting out. I think people on the 6/6S line should wait till the 2017 iPhone and save their time and money. Until Apple shows some significant improvements, it's not worth buying a flagship phone. The only phone that's respectable in terms of pricing is the SE, which can be had for $350 for the 16gb with Metro PCS, but even then, it's a compromising phone with limited storage space, no HD panel, and a small battery capacity.

I don't see how using Android, Chrome, or Windows limits their ability to support their products. And if anything, I'd wager Samsung is in an even more capable position concerning hardware support since they control a far greater portion of both thier supply chain and production than Apple does. They product a huge portion of their own components as well has the actual manufacturing...2 elements where Apple relies entirely on 3rd parties. I think this is a huge lost opportunity for Samsung, especially since it's quite clear they desire to replicate an end-to-end ecosystem in the same fashion as Apple as best as possible.

Again if Samsung thought they could do it they would have done it already. They probably don't want to have to deal with troubleshooting things like chrome, Windows 8/10, etc. Samsung products a lot of hardware, but not software. It is a lost opportunity for sure but as of now it's evident they just can't do it effectively right now

I voted Note 7 but I personally went for an S7 due to the size, got a gear vr on order from Amazon which I've heard good things about. Samsung are killing it at the moment.

For what it's worth, i'd vote neither as I see no signficant reason to upgrade from my 6s+. If I had to pick one and assuming the rumored details on the iPhone 7 are true, I'd pick the iPhone, simply because I still prefer iOS and how it fits into my personal ecosystem (other tech, family and friends).

Wonder how many times the word "ecosystem" have been written on this forum I throw up a little bit every time I hear that word.
Thank god I'm not locked up in any "ecosystem", just uses what I like and I have a macbook but for a phone android is truly the nr1 right now.

Yeah but notice I'm not referring to 'Apple's ecosystem' but rather what fits best into my own. While I certainly prefer many of Apple's devices, I'm not locking myself into any one company's ecosystem and I use what works best for me. And as most of my family and friends prefer Apple hardware themselves, that plays a role in evaluating my personal hardware choices.

Many "iOS ecosystem" things can be so closely recreated on the Android side that they're not worth staying behind for in my opinion. iMessage perhaps being the most easy of them all. I have zero problems texting with the plethora of my iPhone friends and families.

Shrug.

Software issues - Easier to correct.
Hardware issues - More permanent.

Software - Apple > Samsung
Hardware - Samsung > Apple

Apple hasn't come up with a beautiful design since iPhone 5. And even Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and Note7 has got 5s/SE beat already. No wonder Apple continues to use that 2012-2013 design for the SE! They ran out of ideas! Take the best-looking iPhone of all-time (2G, 4/4s, or 5s/SE), and Samsung dusted them last year with the S6 edge. Even HTC, Sony, and Huawei have got Apple beaten in phone design for years.

Just do the math if you want to future proof yourself with storage capacity for the next five years or more.

iPhone 7 (256gb) - $850
Note7 (64gb + free 256gb card = 320gb) - $850
iPhone 7 Plus (256gb) - $950

iPhone 7 has 750p. iPhone 7 Plus has 1080p. Note7 has 1440p for better viewing pleasure with VR. Note7 is smaller than the 7 Plus. Not even mentioning the deals you might get with carriers. Do we really need to spell it out for ya? Where's that S-Pen? ;)

IfItsNotAniphone.jpg

^ That is like Donald Trump's childish, elitist arrogance. I bet iJustine agrees. Makes fun of others but still needs minorities put under slave wages to make them richer for saving money on labor. Worst tagline ever to spawn more of these dense, arrogant iDiots who have as much of a clue using their iPhone as Trump has with a presidential campaign...

If you don't like the Note7 or miss Apple's ecosystem, sell it next year and get the iPhone 8. No big deal. It's just a phone. Disposal things to people.

Note7 = Best and sexiest Galaxy Note ever made. Best smartphone Samsung ever made or until the next one. S7 edge is now second best because it isn't future proofed with Type-C or Gorilla Glass 5.

Get into the early days of VR now. It will improve. Anytime you see bad news on TV, you have something to escape from reality. Watch Duke Dumont's "I Got U" to know what I mean. Note7 is the 7 to upgrade for in 2016. Go for broke for this one. All-in.

The flagship to beat this year

Anytime I have a dilemma with choosing between smartphones, I download videos using TubeMate and loop those phone previews and reviews on my TV. I would study each phone weeks before I decide to get it. I study it like I already own the device. I haven't even gotten my Note7 yet and I already have so many ideas in my head what to do when I do get it. I already know which wallpaper I might use, launcher, and the icons theme pack.

Key is to listen to Mr. Mobile, Michael Fisher. Iron Man aka Captain2Phones and me share the same taste. He uses WP. I do too. He uses Android and isn't into iOS, I am the same way. He love Star Trek, I love Star Wars. We love to tinker. I tried 15 different phone brands out of 26 phones and six different mobile OSes. Expand a little like me and Michael Fisher. He has a great voice, btw. Did voice-over work. Witty sense of humor and very fair.

Watch as many videos especially reviews of each phone as much as you can. I might end up watching each review at least 5-10 times. Then measure the pros and cons. Figure out days before what you plan to use it for and why do you want it? Educate yourselves more with each phone with video reviews.

Short and sweet reviews
The Verge
Engadget

Favorite phone reviewers
1. Michael Fisher
2. Android Authority esp Josh Vergara
3. DetroitBORG (nice, cool voice too)

I watch anyone from Erica Griffin, PhoneDog, PocketNow, Clove, TechRadar, C4ETech, TechnoBuffalo, and Android Central. I realized the Android-centric ones aren't really that biased since this is Android vs Android. I hate PhoneArena though. Xiaomi Mi 5 got a 7/10. LOL! Never liked PA reviewers. Not into written reviews from overrated Anandtech after you realize they are as biased to Apple as the morons from Gizmodo and BGR.

Michael Fisher knows best (a preview)

Yeah actually most in my family and most of my friends also uses iPhones and I once thought the same as you, that it would be easier to stick with an iPhone because of most people I know uses iPhone and imessage. But then i just said **** it and switched to Galaxy S7 which is a way better device then iPhone 6S in most areas. A simple message service is not gonna keep me using a device that I don't prefer over another. And its not that I can't keep in contact with iPhone users just because I use an android. Everyone in my family and my closest friends also have whatsapp so I can still send and receive high quality videos and send messages over wifi/mobile data.
