spoke with apple care today as a followup to this issue. the guy said he had no new news on the issue, other than the fact that its almost 99% sure to be software related and being worked on. he said that if it was hardware, apple would've begun asking for all these handsets back for engineering to rip apart.
when I asked about the public acknowledgment on the issue, he said we should all send that request as feedback to apples normal feedback channel. he stated that if this was affecting every device, like the Note 7 issues, apple would've obviously said something. even though this issue is "widespread" and well known now due to it only affecting a smaller number of devices (given the total out there) in the big picture, he said apple probably wouldn't issue a public statement about it.
still no ETA, but I was assured the engineers are plugging away and will get to the bottom of this
