IPhone in ITunes side bar but won't sync

IPhone 3G ver. 3.1 (7C144)
Mac OS 10.5.8
ITunes 9.0.1

First incident Aug 19, 2009. Got it back after lots and lots of troubleshooting. (Which I only partially remember--but who remembers 6-8 hours of reading and troubleshooting and a 2 hour call to IPhone support)
Second incident: Oct 4, 2009. New replacement IPhone and new SIM card. Same problem.

I read somewhere while doing the entire set of steps that I had to go into a services folder, delete some files, shut down the works then bring it all back. That would be a bug in the restore program. It is not properly overwriting or deleting previous files/services when updating new ITunes software.

Next question: Sound familiar??? I thought I found the advice here or at least the reference that pointed me back to the documentation that would fix it. I can't seem to retrace my steps.

Any help appreciated.....(I just can't go through 8+ hours of troubleshooting again-so call me a wimp!)

iPod controls on iPhone

I had that happen quite frequently with my 3G and it happened a couple times on my 3GS.

Are you sure you are not double clicking the home button? I may be stating the obvious here, but when you double click the home button, the iPod controls appear so you can control your music without unlocking the phone. I sometimes double click the home instead of single click by accident.

Here's my 3.1 bug list (3GS phone). I never noticed any of these under 3.0.1 -

1) Phone loses data connection on 3G even with 5 bars. Turning airplane mode on/off clears sometimes but not always. Sometimes I have to power cycle to get the data network back

2) When power cycling, the spinning icon comes up first (on a black background) and then stops. A few seconds later the password (unlock) screen opens. I have to enter my password and then the phone unlocks and immediately powers off.

3) Any app that uses the GPS can just stop getting GPS updates (Maps, Trapster, RunKeeper, etc.) - Sometimes it takes a day or two (and several power cycles) for the GPS to start working again.

MMS service screwing up emailing??

since they have enabled mms i have gotten many emails from people whose return address is not their normal email, but an mms address like: 1234567890@mms.att.net.

this is some sort of network fudge up on att's part? or something. not sure if the iphone is at fault somehow in addressing the outgoing with a faulty sender field, but... something's mixed up. needs to be fixed.

anyone else have this experience? do we know if apple/att are aware?

My friend's iPhone is crashing and I was wondering if anyone can help.

Every time he opens up an app or iphone it kicks him back to the home screen. It sounds like his memory is full, but he doesn't have a free memory program (and can't get one because of apple shutting them down). I told him to do a soft reset which he did, but it didn't help.

Any thoughts?

Brian

I had the same problem. The only solution was to do a factory restore and set it up as a new phone.

These problems have just shown up today, about 48 hours after unjailbreaking, updating to 3.1.2, and rejailbreaking and tweaking everything back the way I want it (appearance-wise)...I have a "phantom" email (new email indicator is present over the email icon but does not appear in the status bar) despite not actually having any new emails. Not a huge issue, but a little annoying nevertheless.

The second one isn't really a big deal, either, but is more annoying since I wanted to check whether or not my battery life had improved. I now always have the little dashes in place of usage and standby times, along with the "Usage times will be shown after iPhone is fully charged" verbiage below it, whether the phone is fully charged, currently charging, or has 43% remaining. I never get any statistics for them.

I know, I can go ahead and RE-restore and go through the whole stinkin' process again, but that's several hours of work and I don't even know if it'll do any good at this point. Has anyone else on 3.1.2 seen these issues?

Home screen is suddenly zoomed in

Unexplained, my home screen is zoomed in so that I cannot enter my password to unlock the phone. All I can see is two of the four password boxes in the lower part of the home screen, the rest is wallpaper. Keyboard is not visible. Can't reduce the image, cannot move the image up or down, although it jiggles a tiny bit right/left. Tried to turn off an on, tried home plus sleep/awake, the homescreen lights up momentarily at normal size then appears to zoom in and holds there.

Any thoughts?

My Bug List

Here's my 3.1 bug list (3GS phone). Sorry if dups here, this thread has gotten too long to read them all.

1) Phone loses all ATT connections and goes ...searching... I live near the edge of a 3G band, and get 3-4 bars most times, but several times per day the phone will lose all signal except wifi. Calls in progress or coming in during this time drop or go to VM. 3.1 seemed to improve, but not eliminate the problem.

2) Bluetooth interferes with wifi - when BT is left on, Wifi downloads fail, cannot use YouTube or other wifi apps till BT turned off.

3) Dropped calls - in areas where other 3G ATT phones succeed, I drop calls. it is relatively few locations, and I either avoid these, or plan on losing signal there.

Mine just did the same thing. Did you ever figure this situation out?

has anyone noticed that sometimes, you press the app and it suddenly wont work?
it blinks then it goes back to the home screen. this only applies to the installed app and not the original ones.

This has happen to me also, I thinks you need need to reboot the iPhone after a new install or just check for updates. Also try resetting network in the general part in the phone settings. Hope this helps D

Wierd behavior...

We have 2 brand new 3gs phones and only mine seems to have developed a poltergeist that can not be exorcised. If I try to navigate an automated phone system by using the keypad it seems to transposed numbers and not navigate the system correctly. If I switch to speakerphone first then use the number pad it works correctly. I have spent roughly 2 hours of apple tech support time and restored my phone 2 times...once from a back up and once as a new phone...problem still there. Going to the Apple store tomorrow to see if they can beat it with a rubber chicken or something.

iPod App will not stop playing

When I plug in earphones, the iPod app starts automaticlly. The problem is no matter how I pause the track (double click home, open iPod app), the track starts again in a few seconds. After a while ithe song will become distorted, as if the data is corrupted. This occurs for all music stored in the iPhone, all of which was bought through the onboard iTunes app.

This really gets annoying when I am trying to listen to internet radio, as the only work around is to restart the phone with the headphones already plugged in.

Glitch in the vertical scrolling lock mechanism in landscape.

I can't be sure if this bug was present in earlier version of the OS, but I don't remember stumbling on it until recently.

In Safari (and other apps), there is this nice feature that will lock the scrolling motion on the horizontal or vertical axis. It works perfectly in portrait orientation, both for horizontal and vertical scrolling. Once the scrolling is locked on one axis while you're still dragging with your finger, you can then move diagonally but still keep scrolling straight on the same axis.

But in landscape mode, when zoomed, it seems to be broken but only for vertical scroll. What happens is that the vertical lock will kick-in, and then a few pixels later snap out of it in a very glitchy fashion: the horizontal position suddenly jumps to where your finger is, and the vertical offset jumps by some seemingly random amount. With quick swipes and the wrong timing, it can result in some very sudden scrolling where your screen view will bounce around erratically to some random destination.

The key thing is that you have to be in landscape mode, and you have to zoom at least a little (if the page width fits perfectly in the screen the bug will not occur). Also, I've seen the bug happen in other apps, so it may not be specific to Safari.

This bug is very annoying as I often use the landscape mode to read articles, zoomed on a text column.

Before filing a bug to Apple I wanted to be sure that it doesn't happen because of some jailbreaking app I just installed (I suspect SBsettings...)

BTW I'm running the latest OS version on a 3GS.

missing contact

Hi all. I have just added a contact from my Recent call list and it does not appear in my contacts list. It is there but not appearing in the main contact list. How do I know it is there? I use whatzapp to view the contacts and sure enough the contact i added is in but when i launch the main contacts app it is not there. Any idea how to resolve this other than reseting the phone which i have done and it worked for awhile before having the same problem again. Such a pain to reset and set everything back to the state i have been using. Lots of thanks for any advice.

installed 3.1.2 apps stopped working

Last night I finally installed 3.2.1 in my 3GS. I then synced it with my brand new MacBook Pro.

Now nothing works except what came with it. Any app I try to open kicks me back out to the home screen.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Calculator

Yes so today in Physics class I wanted to solve 5cos60

Entered into phone like this:
60
cos (result shows 0.5)
x
5 (result here shows 2.50000000000000001)

Obviously wrong. I wonder if I should stop trusting the calculator all together.

Now if you turn the calculator to portrait the answer is displayed as 2.5

Probably doesn't have the best floating point hardware to do calculations

don't know if this has been mentioned yet.

I've noticed the phone has a small chance of crashing if you take a photo and then hit the sleep button while the camera app is still active. Doing this has crashed the phone about 6 times in 6 months for me (the phone stays off and doesn't respond to anything). The only way to get it back is to reboot it.

As a work-around I've gotten in the habit of exiting the camera app before hitting the sleep button.
