I think we can conclude there are defective screens out there. I also find it odd that there is a way to actually ID the screen? Nice, but seems weird to have such information accessible or even have the function for the screen to ID itself.

I really doubt its a software glitch.

On another note, those of you with the dotted screen, do you have any other problems with the phone like low volumes, etc? I am wondering if there are specific problems to a specific batch of phones.....

Good to know Steve.

So what now? are you sending yours back? do you think they'll fix the screen or just send you another one?

also, are you given the option to keep the loaner if you want to?

A>

I'm sending it back. Actually, I just dropped it off at my local Fedex, but it was after the cut-off time. It says it'll be delivered on 7/17, which seems long for an overnight package, but maybe they don't ship on Saturdays. I'm not certain. Maybe the online thing is just screwed up.

Anyways, I really hope I get a new one, or if they replace my screen, that I get one without dots and dead pixels. I would be very annoyed to have a dead pixel in the middle of my screen. That's what started this whole mess. The loaner actually has a stuck blue pixel right where you type.

I don't think they'll let you keep the loaner. It is laser engraved with 'AppleCare Service' on the back.

i just excahnged my iphone because of battery issues.....but now the new one i got has some light leakage on edge of screen , some points of dot, like 4 on each corner and some on the home button

plus i also have this checker dot issue, i NEVER had it one my previous phone, which makes it very noticeable on the new one

does this make it eligible for another exchange again????? do i just go back ?????

It most definitely makes you eligible for another exchange.

funny how that works out. I went to the apple store for an exchange and I got with the 7 screen and I have no white dots. Weird I'm on the iPhone right now typing this so I'll have to double check the model number to make sure I don't have a 3rd model. I'll let u guys know

guys, i'm at an apple store right now and checked the lcd on a bunch of the display models. They all are the version that starts with 7. And most do not have the white dot issue. Also when I hold my phone right next to them they are noticeably blacker. I'm guessing all the white spots make mine gray. So it is not directly related to the lcd type.

just got back from the 5th exchange(!!!)

same screen.
same problem.

Also, this one has a faint vertical column in the middle.
It shows under light colors.

i can conclude that the screens with serial number 7455232
are POS.

Awaiting for Apple's official statement.

I am not exchanging anything until i hear something.

EDIT: i lied. I made another appointment at ANOTHER apple store for tomorrow.

i know...i know...

A>

how many times are you allowed to exchange it?? or do they check?
my 14 days is up tomorrow actually, am i allowed exchanges after that? or is there some fee or something

i have an appointment later tonight in a couple hours so hopefully this one will be the one that is perfect......damnit....

I don't think there is a limit.

if they recognize the defect, then you're good to go.

do the geniuses ACKNOWLEDGE the checkered white dot issue and give your a prompt exchange?
or do you have to point it out at them and stuff and explain and hope the genius understands

no, most of them don't acknowledge it, in my experience.

All the ones i talked to said it's normal.
The last one even grabbed another customer's iphone and showed me the same problem on his, at which point he affirmed it's "normal".

my girlfriend was with me and her iphone doesn't have this issue, so she showed it to the genius, who added that "it must be a different manufacturer for the screen, but it's normal that yours has that pattern".

So i don't know...maybe we're just a little too early in the process of them discovering the issue.
Or maybe right now that's how all iphones are going to be, which is going to suck, since the difference between the two screens is obvious.

hope this helps,

so how did you get them to do an exchange for you?
if they dont want to acknowledge it

I've been through 7 now. this one seems to be the best so far. Aside from the dots. No Dead pixels, reception problems, battery, plastic on back and glass, all fine.

The dots also disappear when when the battery is dead, and it says, connect to power with a red blinking battery on screen.

i am gonna see what happens tomorrow.

If i get another one with the same issue i might just return it and swallow the restocking fee. Then wait until i know that they're going to fix it.

It seems that they released the "good ones" first, and now all you can find are the checkered ones, which i don't think it's fair.

Oh i wish i didn't return my 1st one...

We replaced my girlfriends on Wednesday night and she got one with a good screen. I had a very bad feeling when I returned my first one for a few dead pixels that with my luck, I would get something worse. It appears I have. I am just a perfectionist, so this really bothers me. At any rate, I'm giving Apple a chance to make it right. I believe they will. It's just a matter of how quickly they will do it.

Same here, although my paranoia of the new screen issue becoming the standard is eating me alive.
I hate it when these things happen while i have days off! i have nothing else to do but go crazy!

anyway, will report tomorrow, after my 6th attempt.

Black background

I couldn't find a plain black background but here's a close one. If you're on the affected iPhone you will clearly see the dots. If I was on my desktop I'd upload a plain background jpg but I'm typing this from the phone.

I submitted this to Apple ADC Bug Reporter (http://bugreport.apple.com) and included all the information here as well as a link to this thread, listed under iPhone>Serious Bug.

Hopefully they'll take a look and recognize/do something about this bug (if you'd call it that--more of a hardware defect).

I stood in line the first day and got my iPhone and the first batch. It's the 7452 version. The theory that the 74 series is a later/cheaper revision of the LCD is not correct.Proven by my iPhone.

I also have excellent vision and have found no dots anywhere. No gridding etc.

This is more than likely in some peoples minds.

Did you see the image in the beginning of this thread of the close-up? This is not just in peoples' minds. It's a real thing. Mine has that same checkered pattern. And by my visit to the apple store today, it is worse in some phones than others -- all with the same LCD. You happened to get a good one. Go ahead and give yourself a nice pat on the back.

Just go in a dark room, put you hand over the lens and take a photo. Voila a black screen you can use in full screen in the camera app. For the record I think the grid people are seeing is normal to the version of the screen being used. You had better get used to it or buy something else because if it is a cheaper variant or something like that it is here to stay. The screen on the iPhone is head and shoulders above just about any other mobile handset so just enjoy it. I love the quality of the screen but I didn't expect it to be the same as a 1080p 50" plasma either, which btw looks like utter crap if you take a macro photograph of the screen matrix too.

The theory is more than valid.
it might be an issue limited to a particular batch of those screens but it is real, not in people' a minds.

The fact that you were lucky doesn't change the fact that all of us weren't .

Ok, I could see the dots with this, but I had to get my eye 2" from the screen to see them. Now my eyes hurt. There's no way that this would ever bother me, as I have no plans to ever look at my screen from that close.

Sheepnutz,

i am glad it's not bothering you.

most of the people that have an issue with it are the ones that had to return an iphone with the other LCD screen model, which was, for lack of a better word, better, sharper and spotless.

that's why they are so noticeable to us.
