I got mine on the first day and have the good screen. When and were these phones were shipped to may be hard to track down. The LCD ID function is nice and helps.

So are we saying that all the in stock phones now seem to have the lesser screen?

I have dead pixels and very easy to easy to see white dots... I'm just really annoyed at this point from my own experience and from the experiences of other posters. It seems like if I go in for a exchange I'm probably just going to get another POS screen and the whole cycle will just continue again and again. Can I demand a return without paying for the restocking fee? Has anyone been able to return without paying the restocking fee? I could wait a couple months until software/firmware/minor hardware upgrades are made. I just don't feel like dealing with the bugs even though the phone is uber cool.

i don't know if you can return it without the restocking fee.

it appears the Geniuses at the stores think that's a normal display.
I don't know if they're told it's normal or what.

they do see the pattern on the screen but say it's normal because of the touch interface, but they are puzzled when i show them my girlfriend's phone, which doesn't have any of those artifacts and still works perfectly to the touch.

I stood in line the first day and got my iPhone and the first batch. It's the 7452 version. The theory that the 74 series is a later/cheaper revision of the LCD is not correct.Proven by my iPhone.

Not sure our small forum study shows the 74's are all POS. But they still could be later and or current versions. It's possible that apple has been building 5755136 for months then a few weeks or months ago, started making the 7455232. This could have happen b4 the 29th, so you would be able to get a 7455232 on day one.

I'm not sure thats the case though. in my exchanging experience they all seem to be mixed together. Here is order i got them.
1) Clear
2) Clear
3) Dots
4) Clear
5) Clear
6) Dots
7) Clear
8) Dots

At the apple store now.
they seem to have replaced all iphones with the new screen with the defect(if you wanna call it that).
I am sure the old models on the floor didn't have the issue.

I guess it is the norm from now on.

So if this is the case, I just sent my iPhone in for nothing. My luck, they'll take it apart, then it'll get put back together and come back with more problems or scratches or something. I'm a little nervous now!

just swapped it.

same screen.

they are all like this for now.

at least everywhere in Los Angeles.

I really hope it is a software issue

Wow, that stinks. I'll let you know what happens with my repair.

Did you have any other defects that allowed you to get the exchange? Or did the Genius acknowledge that the white dots are not normal?

Ugh.

On my third iPhone after dealing with two sets suffering from battery and dead pixel issues. The last one didn't have this pattern issue until brightness was maxed and viewing it in a dark room. This model (7 series) has the pattern at 50% brightness, though I'm lucky to say that there are no dead pixels or battery issues (as of 24hrs.).

One thing I noticed about this phone is that the contents come in different plastic wrappings. For example, when I removed the phone from its plastic wrap to replace the SIM, I noticed that there was this distinct white speckled tab in the back of it. The wrapping from my previous model (which I still have for some odd reason) was clear. Also, the "Designed in CA..." info in the back of the phone looks and feels different from my previous model. It has this off white hazy look to it. Last, the buttons (lock, volume) feel as if they're more recessed than the buttons on my previous model.

There was a gentleman next to me who was exchanging his phone for volume issues and notice that the new phone came in the plastic wrapping with the white tab I spoke about. This was done at the Glendale store in the LA area.

SO...............what now? When will we hear if this is a legit defect or issue?

I was able to exchange my phone last night for a new one and this new one has LCD 5755136. So there are some new phones out there with this LCD.

Now that being said, I can still see the white dots on it, although it is not as noticeable. Probably only even saw them because I knew to look for them. This new screen does, however, have a few stuck pixels whereas my old checker screen had none. I'm beginning to think there is no such thing as a perfect iPhone. I think I'm going to take my stuck pixels and swallow my OCD and just get over it.

I had a 5755136 that i bought on the 29th and i took it back because it had one bad pixel... BIG Mistake.. I got another 5755136 which had another dead pixel and the black covering was loose.. so I took that one back and this time I was given a 7455232. I have yet to activate it, and I have even left the plastic wrap on. I think I am going to go back to the apple store and explain this situation to them and see if I can somehow get a 5755136 back. I would do anything to have my 'original' iphone back.

I think I have made an observation about this problem though that would help identify which phone has which lcd. The plastic wrapping around a new iphone has a tab to help you lift it out of the box. In 5755136 models this tab is clear, however when i got a 7455232 the tab is (ironicly) covered in a checkered pattern with white dots. This is just my own observation can anyone help me confirm this?

Thanks

Argh! I know what you guys are fussing about now. I had one of the launch day phones and had to send it back because it was rebooting. The service phone I received did not have the dots issue. However, the replacement unit I just received has nowhere near as vivid colors, and the white dots can clearly be seen at 1/2 brightness.

Just got my 7 series 8gb with dead pixels and erratic signal strength issues replaced for another 7 series. The white dots are even more apparent then the last one but the signal strength issue is no longer an issue. I think this white dot thing is the norm... I guess :apple: can't always be perfect :(

My phone is on its way to AppleCare right now specifically because of the white dots. I hope they don't send a replacement with the white dots as well.

Do you plan on getting another phone, or are you going to keep the new one?

I got a 57 LCD with the dots on the plastic tab, but it had bad pixels. So somewhere out there exists new iPhones with the better LCD.

yeah i don't know what to do either.

I think i will wait a little to see if we get any official word, then i will decide if i am keeping this model .

i know this might be a long shot, but do you guys think there is some relationship between the LCD number and the phone serial number?
that way it would be easier to track a "good " screen

thaphil:

where and when did you exchange it?

Ok, I have the 5755136 model. I bought it on the 29th. I can see the grid pattern, but it seems to be only in sunlight and i have to look at it at a weird angle..

Can anyone confirm this on their 57's?

Hi,

i believe the grid you're seeing is just the touch sensitive film, which, if i am right , you should see even with the phone off.

The pattern we are talking about is visible in the dark, even on the home screen.
it shows up as small white dots, regularly spaced ever 2 or 3 pixels.

hope this helps,
