phoneorpda , maybe getting serial numbers and version (4 or 8GB) would help.

Is there a way to pool this info or is someone willing to do the leg work and make a spreadsheet?

I think by know we know it affects just the once LCD version. If somehow we could isolate the serial number range, maybe that would help. Of course serials of models that are OK with this LCD version would be needed to narrow it down - assuming there are any!

unfortunately i was looking at all my previous serial numbers and i don't see any pattern that would make me think there is a way to connect the LCD model to the phone part no.

oh well.

i know i am obsessing over this, but i can't help but think that it might be a calibration issue.

If I watch any tv episode or movie i watched on the previous model or on my girl's iphone, i notice something similar to compression, which wasn't there on the other one.it's not the compression from the video itself, since the same file shows up perfectly, with no glitches on the other phone or on my macbook.

It seems like a big fault for a screen, difficult to overlook.

it might just be that the screens were calibrated with software on the 1st model, and they didn't recalibrate with the new ones.

even the battery charging icon has a weird glow, almost looks compressed in the corners.

this would explain why the definition on this one is so sh***y and why it doesn't look like the pattern is there right at the beginning of the boot process.

now, if only they would release a patch soon, we would have some sort of confirmation to this.

Also, most of these "odd" screen iphones seem to have the light leakage issue from the corners /ear piece too.At least all the ones i got.

i guess i was lucky with the first one, if it wasn't for the constellation of multi colored dead pixels it had.

Images are not that good, but you get the idea.

i can't take pictures of the good iphone for the time being.
maybe someone else will be able to do an A/B test, but for now, it shows what i mean with "compression".
Also, you can see the good old checkered dots pattern, of course.

this is at half brightness.

I am not sure what you mean by compression? Also an update on my situation, I have the 7 series LCD, I was going to take it back but i decided against it. I've returned two phones both with problems and I feel like it could be a perpetual cycle at this point. Also I am really thinking this could be a software fix and nothing to do with the hardware. I think that only people who have had one of the 'original' iphones will notice this problem, and therefore it is important for us that notice it to continue to bring it to apples attention.

by compression i mean that the faded areas always look uneven, like in a compressed video or image.
the other iphone i have in the house doesn't behave that way.

i agree with you (and hope) that it might be a software issue.

Never seen this or heard about it - take it in, I'm sure they'll swap your unit. I had a unit that was - lopsided so to say (the chrome housing was shifted a *tiny* amount to the right, so that I could see a speck of light from between the glass/chrome on the right side of the phone). I took it to Apple, they swapped it out with a new, perfect phone. :)

hey,

i am on my 6th iphone, and they all have this screen issue, besides having the light leakage in the corners of the screen. Not that lucky so far over here!

i also posted a link to our thread on howard forums:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1201847

i'd like to get as much feedback from people as possible.

Yes, i am on a mission and i won't stop until i know what the deal is.

(or until monday, when i go back to work :))

steve jobs should hire us for quality assurance......

im going to wait and hold out for the future batches of phones
and hope its better then.......which i hope and kinda expect it to be

but dont worry phoneorpda! i got your back on this mission!
i want this checkered screen resolved, and i want no more light points on my corner edges!

i just want to cry until apple acknowledges these issues.... *SOB*

we'll make it happen...more and more people are seeing the issue on howardforums too:

give it some time.

for now all we can do is to keep the threads alive and post the issue on other boards.

oh yeah, and file a report with apple...if i could only find the link.Already submitted mine though.

Yes I am on my third (the first two were the 5*** series screen and had their own problems) This one is flawless except the 7*** series screen and checkerboard pattern so I am hoping they can fix this via firmware (which really should be possible since it is not present during bootup).. Hopefully.. Thank you phoneorpda for bringing this to others attention! I just hope that apple will recognize this issue soon.

you're welcome.

i too hope apple does something about this.

unfortunately i am noticing that the stores are progressively swapping the 5*** floor models for 7*** so i am worried that they're slowly making a statement...

i hope not!

I would hope a software fix can address this issue. If nothing else, I think it might be software related because it only appears half-way through the boot process. If it were as simple as calibration, that would be great!

I am going to see what happens when I get my phone back from AppleCare. If they don't do anything and just send it back, or if they swap it with a phone with the same type of display, I may write Apple and see what they say. Most people would hardly ever notice this issue, but when I hold my iPhone next to an iPhone that doesn't have the problem, it is quite apparent. I paid my $600+ just like everyone else, and I don't want to have a lower quality screen.

I really am going to give Apple a chance to address this issue though. It would really do them some good to at least acknowledge it. If Apple said it were a software issue, we wouldn't all be wasting Apples money with exchanges and repairs. We would sit (somewhat) patiently and wait for the 'magic fix' software update.

I'll keep everyone updated on how my repair goes. I just stalked my package via Fedex, and it is in Indianapolis right now. I'm located in northwest Indiana, so Indianapolis is the main hub before it goes to TX. I hope it gets there Monday morning, and not Tuesday morning like the tracking say it will.

In the mean time, I'm enjoying the loaner white-dot-spotless-iPhone for the time being :)

As do I. Reading early posts in this thread about people talking to apple tech support on the phone and them claiming to be aware of this issue, has anyone heard anything more then this from phone support? It would be very promising if they were claiming to know about the issue (which would mean they have recieved multiple calls about it)

I was also thinking and putting the 7***** models on the floor now, maybe they know a software update is in the works OR I really hope they aren't simply trying to cover up the two different lcd models produced. I have to imagine the last thing apple wants to hit the news is that the iphone has a serious problem with the display.. and not only that but its not a problem with the first series produced its actually a problem with the series being produced right now!

Does anyone know which manufacturer is making this problematic lcd: Isuppli reported three different makers for the iphone lcd?

yeah, i share the same feelings.
i tend to believe it might be a software issue, or at least i hope so.

enjoy the loaner!!!

Can we add this to the list of bugs that Macrumors is keeping track of? OR to the stick(ied) thread at the top of iPhone Tips, Help and Troubleshooting?

I hate to be overly pessimistic on this one, but why don't you all just return the phone and state the problem. I think that will send apple a message long before forum posts.

Anthony, i hate to tell you, but if you would have read the previous posts, you would have noticed that a lot of us have returned their iPhones several times already, and ended up with the same problem.
I am at iphone number 6.

I don't mean exchange. I mean return. As in, I'm not giving you my money until you fix the problem I have with your product. I have been reading your thread. I returned my second iPhone (i exchanged my first) due to hardware problems. The backlight on the first one died, and the second had a horrible cluster of red stuck pixels, that were very very obvious on any background. I returned, and told them when I don't have to exchange a product multiple times to get one that works as advertised, I will be happy to buy it again. They didn't charge me a restocking fee. And, each time, the case was noted by the genius bar, and will hopefully help apple with their quality control. I just think making a company return your money, and telling them you won't give it back to them until they fix the problem, is making more of a statement than simply exchanging. Also, is it really worth the hassle? They will get it right eventually.

i see what you mean.

but i can't leave without it for now.Good or Bad screen.

kinda like quitting an addiction, i guess...

i hope they'll do something about it though.
As long as we keep on talking about it, mail the main websites (macrumors, gizmodo, engadget) and try to get the issue recognized out in the wild.

Oh yes, the Apple addiction. Well, then, I completely understand. I just converted what had to be the tenth person in the last year to mac.. I didn't know whether I should be happy or sad for this one, she has no idea what she is getting in to. Believe me, it wasn't easy for me to put my foot down on this one, I had literally put the money aside for the iphone after it was rumored that apple was going to make one post ROKR failure. And this was, of course, before I even knew how much it would be...which i of course...didn't care.

It seems like you are all doing productive work. Once you start narrowing things down to serial numbers, you are definately making ground. I can then add to this post by stating what you already know, my two iphones were of the launch variety, and had no white dots. Although I should mention, they both had backlight showing through the earpiece, I even have a few threads on it here somewhere. I currently have a C2D MBP with the "sparkly screen" issue. There is currently a class action lawsuit that was filed a few months ago for this issue as well as other problems with this display. All of this started by identifying effected serial numbers, and macrumors and apple forum posts are even cited in the lawsuit documents (which are available online). So even if apple doesn't listen to you guys, eventually, i'm sure a lawyer will, and they will have no choice but to listen.

Sorry for the blunt pessimistic post. It's just in the wake of this "satisfaction survey" and the ridiculous amount of people that are in love with the iPhone (despite all the flaws), I would just love to see a rush of returns, so hopefully they get it right sooner rather than later. Then, I can jump back on the iphone bandwagon, and accomplish my dream of having every aspect of my digital life run by osx. Because at that point, bill gates could drown microsoft, the us government would be in shambles, the whole world would crumble...and the only ones left to run the world, would be the most realistic, intellectual group of people on earth...mac users.

obvious difference?

now, there is no confirmation (yet) that these are two different models, but it seems to be a coherent assumption.
