People keep pointing to this, but the circumstances were entirely different.

Apple experienced much lower demand for iPhone 6s than expected. Also, Apple only had two choices (8MP or 12MP camera) back then. Finally, it was $399 vs. $649. Now, it’s $399 vs. $699.
I wouldn’t call that “entirely different” but ok. It is what it is. Between the camera and the battery life, this is a disappointment to me, and I’ll pass (was expecting to buy one).

Battery life is the big one for me, Okay the A13 is more efficient but I'm not expecting this to be great.

What do you mean? I see it as it has the same as 11 Pro. Its just missing the other 2.
Where do you see its from XR and not 11 Pro?

iPhone 11 rear lens has 100% Focus Pixels which enables night mode. This SE2 doesn’t have it.

Apple says "Lasts about the same as iPhone 8"

I don't see how this could be, unless they shrunk the battery

I think they undersold SE1 too on battery life at release. A9+same battery was battery than A7+same battery, no doubt. Especially on the shipping iOS version it came with, vs. several major iOS upgrades later on 5s

Looks pretty good to me. £419 in the UK so not a bad price. Will wait for reviews over the next couple of days first before ordering.

but is it? A13 efficiencies should yield longer battery life, even with same capacity.

A13 power efficiency gains were very minor. The biggest change with iPhone 11 Pro was a bigger battery which increased device thickness. This SE2 retains the same thickness as iPhone 8. I wouldn’t expect much if any battery life gains.

For $399 or even $449, it’s not going to have the iPhone 11 camera. It’s simply not realistic.

The only surprising thing is it has the same battery life as iPhone 8.
Thoughts on if the Apple smart battery case will fit and be compatible?

It looks 1:1 like the iPhone 8.
I wonder if existing iPhone 8 cases and screen protector will fit for the new iPhone SE.
If so there is no need for me to buy new one.

Reviews on what? Everything is known. Same size and weight as iPhone 8 with same display and battery life. Same chip as iPhone 11/Pro/Max. Same camera as iPhone XR. Pretty much an iPhone 8 with a better chip and camera.

A11 to A13, a two generational leap, we're at a standstill? A12 powering a relatively low res screen (XR), had big leaps over A11 (granted powering an OLED but) even more so than A11 powering 8+ and certainly A11 powering 8

--

is this one nerfed from having Night Mode or Night Sight or whatever its called, like 11/11 Pro have?

Based on in-depth review of A13 by Anandtech, power efficiency in some areas regressed with A13 compared to A12.

The XR battery life largely came from the chassis thickness.

It’s possible the SE2 has a smaller battery due to Gigabit LTE antennas or the XR camera module.

a11 ---> a13 chip, yet 0% difference in battery life. so these "new efficient chips" have been a marketing scam the entire time?

I don’t care about cameras at all, but battery life is #1. This is a letdown for sure, but Apple battery case support could salvage it for me.

It is more efficient, as it’s faster, and consumes about the same amount of energy. But changes to the chip wouldn’t be enough to give you major battery difference that you seem to be (wrongly) expecting.

I use an 11 Pro as my personal device but this looks like it might make a good work phone. Will see if the rumoured Pixel 4a materialises, but will need to get one in July.

A11 to A12 gives us up to 30 minutes more battery life, according to Apple.

A12 to A13 is about even and in some cases, regressed.

I do keep forgetting even with big efficiency gains as a marketing bullet point, that cpu represents an overall much smaller picture of what is using up the battery .. that's how its been explained to me before when you hear 30% more efficient but nowhere near 30% more battery, for example.

4a will be out for sure. The A series is an absolute winner for google.

I think a lot of those figures are "up to" - so corner cases. It might be up to 30% better when under full load, but most people are not transcoding a video on iPhone.
