They also wondered when iOS was going to really offer “something exciting” or at the least some more customization.

heard that as well. I know people who bought the x and are like "so why did I pay that much money on it, it doesn't do anything my last iphone couldn't do?!" and apart from size, notch, face id and the mediocre screen - all things which don't affect "what" you do with the device, there isn't any difference worth mentioning. of course an iphone is an iphone, people should know that, but many expect something a little more exciting for their money.

The expectation for an iPhone to be drastically different every single year upon a release is not a reality. iPhones are increased incrementally an annual basis for reasons to give the user just enough incentive to be interested in upgrading altogether. But what the iPhone X truly offers aside from Face ID and the OLED display, is the new form factor, edge to edge, etc. Physical changes tend to attract consumers more than softer related features, which other features falls into place there after.

Most people I know never got a 7 and hadn’t upgraded in 3+ years. At my workplace there are many people with iPhone 4’s and 6’s.

To that group, the X has plenty to be excited about. Big screen, ridiculous battery life, and fast as hell. If they pass on it, it will be because it’s very expensive, not because it’s lacking in features or performance.

Coming from a SE, the X has been a great upgrade. I'm very pleased with the phone and look forward to apple updating the software to improve the experience.

I still love mine (came from a 7+). Now, when I see a +phone in the wild they look comedy large, it’s funny how perceptions can change.

I did like the screen size on the 7+, but it was the camera system I bought it for. Naturally the camera is even better on the X and the screen is big enough for my typical use cases.

I’m not sure if the oliophobic coating has changed or it’s just a new-vs-old thing, but the screen feels much nicer to me on the X.

but even for those people, where's the wow factor when it comes to "what" you actually do with the device? ios doesn't really change (which I personally appreciate), so you get to do exactly the same as you always do. you can see what you already have on a bigger screen, it's faster and the battery lasts longer. but it's still exactly the same. [I'm not speaking for myself here; just repeating the complaints I got to hear from other people]

Edge to edge screen and no home button / gesture UI makes it a different experience for me. Easily the biggest change since the original iPhone. I enjoy using this phone more than any besides the original.

Coming from a 7 plus, then an 8 plus, the X is truly the most amazing Apple product I've purchased since the first iPhone. The real high points (vs the 7 plus) for me have been the screen (both overall quality and immersion level due to bezels, and the size relative to the body), the gestures, the build, FaceID, and the cameras.

Compared to 8 plus I love how much smaller it is, the gestures, FaceID, the better telephoto camera, the portrait mode on selfies.

I do wish it was a little wider, but I don't think I'll switch back to the plus size next year as the screen is JUST large enough to contain 90% of the plus size data in a much smaller physical form factor. And Face ID could improve it's angles a bit, and when you wake up, but otherwise is SUPER fast (cognitively) and convenient especially when using apps that support it. It unlocks things before you can process in your mind you need to unlock.

My true measure of a device is after some time if I still am amazed by it in some way. That it really adds to my quality of life. The iPhone X definitely feels that way a month & a week later for me ... and it will only get better as software improves and adapts.

I don't know for sure. Some say it's the use of PWM in their OLED. I'm not technical enough to understand that stuff.

PWM (flickering) is indeed pretty severe on iPhone X OLED at low brightness compared to the LCD. I can deal with it, but I notice it. Some will get a headache.

I felt the same way about how big the plus phones were even when I had the 6/7 plus.

I've always said I'd prefer a non plus phone with the plus camera and the X currently has the best iphone camera on the closest non plus form available.

I hate the notch(I watch a lot of video on my phone on the treadmill and laying in bed) but not a dealbreaker.

Other than that I love the gestures although those shouldn't be an iphone x exclusive feature IMO.

Overall I don't have a giant phone in my pocket anymore, the latest and greatest iphone tech and one of the best mobile phone cameras available.

Only issue if I'm looking for one is that there is no 128gb option.

I love mine. Originally, I was highly considering returning mine before even using it. Once I started using it, I just couldn't go back to my 6-plus.

Got it on launch day and I am highly disappointed. I'm in the process of selling this. I'm either going to get an 8 plus or note 8

Given that I sold my 7, I will be keeping it for the long term. It doesn't look that much bigger than the 7, but it feels like it, especially the weight difference. I didn't think that the notch would bother me, but I do find it to be kind of weird looking. The build quality on mine seems to be beautiful. I slipped it in a clear Luvvitt sleeve and threw an Omoton glass screen protector on it as soon as I took it out of the box. I did the same thing with my 7 when I got it on launch day last year. No scratches at all. Still debating getting applecare. FaceID is a pain in the car and on the nightstand charger. I love new batteries! Still getting used to it as I've only had it a few days.

Still love it. Hard to believe the iPhone I've always wanted is here (all screen). One thing that keeps getting better to me is the OLED screen. I still have a few prior iPhones in the house, and I now immediately notice the "blacks", or lack thereof. My eyes have grown accustomed to the true blacks and the LCDs have become noticeable now. I obviously didn't care before when I was using the previous models because it's all relative. Never had interest to move to Android just for OLED. But it's a nice perk of the new phone. The battery life savings on the black screens is the real benefit, but it is really nice to look at too.

Disclaimer: The following is directed at the people to which you're referring, not you personally.

I don't get this. The iPhone OS is optimized for app usage and that's "what" people use their phones for if I'm not mistaken. Are people clamoring for a different way to access their applications? Different ways to toggle settings switches? Turn their screen on and off? What is it that people are bored with and want changed, exactly?

When I use my phone, I'm in an application 99% of the time. Changes in the way I interact with my device are therefore in the hands of the developers of the apps I use. The OS has nothing to do with it.

Same people who hang out with friends/family just to stare at their phones?

Can you elaborate more on what you're disappointed with about the iPhone X?

For one I feel it is over priced. The iPhone 8 Plus has essentially the same features but cost less.

The screen size is too small.

Face ID works about %80 of the time. Fingerprint sensor should have still been an option.

The notch is annoying at times.

Thanks for your feedback. I do agree that iPhone X is expensive. And my biggest complaint that I have with the iPhone X is one that I share with you, is the display does feel much smaller compared to the 8+. I like that it's more comfortable to hold, but by no means am I going to shy away from the rumored 6.5 OLED iPhone X next year.

The big edge-to-edge screen, the ridiculous battery life, the bright and clear camera, and being fast as hell is the “wow” factor.

It’s 2017. What else should a smartphone do? Make toast?

Have been wondering how easy it is to cause burn in on oled screens... anyone?
Companies like Google and Samsung have mitigated the issue, through a number of various software tricks. Since this is Apple's first OLED phone, its a bit of an unknown regarding how much or how little Apple invested in minimizing the burn-in affect on the displays.

Sums it up nicely for me though I'd add "big edge-to-edge screen" in a much smaller package.

I reference You Tube videos daily at work for printer tear-downs, etc and the combination of speed, display quality and a small form factor makes the X a far better choice for me vs my 6 Plus or 8 Plus especially when I'm balancing a laptop or tools in one hand. Apple made the best compromise in my opinion when designing the X.
