It’s activated for sure. I don’t have big hands, and the bottom is really the bottom. It’s a stretch to use it, hence awkward, not undoable.
This does seem odd, but maybe you just grip the phone differently than most. Mine basically rests on top of my pinkie finger and then, when relaxed, my thumb naturally hovers right over the bottom of the screen. Maybe you grip the phone higher or something and therefor are having to reach down with your thumb.

Yes. That’s exactly what happened. I don’t hold the phone on top of pinky finger most of time.

I don't understand this for two reasons:
  1. You can just flick/swipe upwards to close/remove apps from the multitasking pane.
  2. This isn't something that is done often anyway, but instead in the rare occasion that an app freezes or otherwise misbehaves. So it would seem odd for it to be a big complaint or something that would drive a person crazy.

1. No, you can swipe away after first enabling the "delete" mode. It's one extra, annoying step to closing an app.

2. I don't like keeping apps I barely open running in the background for no reason. The only thing I keep open always is messages since it's my most used app. If I open a banking app once a month to pay a bill, why would I want that always suspended in memory? Tell me it makes no difference, I don't care. I'm OCD I like closing apps.

Face ID - Surprisingly it doesn’t work well for me. Over the past day I have numerous failed unlocks mixed with successful unlocks. Now I’m laying on bed with no other light on and it won’t unlock from lock screen no matter how many tries but some supported apps can be unlocked.

Try redoing the face id setup in a well lit room and also turning attention off. I haven't had any major issues but did find its not so great when looking at the phone from an angle such as at the desk or in the dark when I was in bed.

Back to last app - it used to be just left top corner, now it’s a smaller font below time but above current app and it doesn’t align with neither so it looks really odd.

This is not really that big an issue. Initially took me a while to figure out how to get back to my phone screen though!

The extra space - what’s up the big blank on settings above settings title? And the void below keyboard and between left globe and right dictation? Very odd design.

I think the space at the bottom is wasted too. The benefit though is that it allows fast swapping between open apps and reachability to work though without having to use multifigure gestures.

The flashlight and camera icon on notification - why do I have to force touch to use them? Especially it’s confusing when force touch flashlight from control center allows me to choose light intensity.

Didn't even realise they had changed that. That is annoying. There should be an option to change this.

The bar on horizontal mode (or just the bar) - I know it’s a new system of gesture but do I really need the bar to remind me I can swipe up from bottom to go to home? I used that gesture hundreds of times a day! I don’t see its necessity when no bars or anything indicates you for control center and notifications. Especially it has to be persistent when I watch video or playing games on horizontal mode. First of all It’s a distraction (I even get used to the notch very quickly)! Secondly for games that now just keeps its original ratio, the bar just makes the game looks even smaller. (I come from 6+ btw)

Yup, agree. There should be an option to remove this.

Reachability - for those who’s wondering, it’s swipe DOWN from the BOTTOM! But try doing this with one hand, how awkward it is because of the full screen. And if I need the other hand to activate it, why do I need this function?

Took me a few goes to get the hang of it but now works relatively consistently

I'm already forgetting gestures from my 6s Plus, but doesn't it require a double tap on the home button? So two taps/presses and then a swipe up? Not sure how the gesture on the X is worse than that...

The second part of that is entirely on you. You're voluntarily doing something completely unnecessary.

The only thing so far that I will complain about is the ringer. When receiving a call on both of our x’s you can barely here it even though it is turned all the way up.

I noticed that there is a new setting for the ringer. Go to Settings > Sounds and Haptics, and see what the ringer volume is set to.

I like my ringer set 3/4 of the way and I kept using my volume button to try and lower it. It wasn’t working so I checked the settings and noticed that the ringer volume is set there and the volume buttons control everything else.

I find this to be a great improvement. Sometimes I’m in bed with my phone while the girlfriend sleeps and I turn my volume down with the physical volume buttons (Plus I like the volume lower on apps and feedback, etc. anyways). If I don’t remember to turn it back up my alarm in the morning isn’t loud enough. It’s caused me to wake up late several times.

Same. I also leave it off to one side and will only glance at it from an off center position. I can see my phone screen from a decent distance. The phone lays flat, I don’t want it on a stand, and if I’m in meetings, it wouldn’t be on a stand anyway. I’m good at looking at my phone without looking at it.

I’m going to have to get some friends to do some tests for me, but even if it is an issue, hopefully it will be nothing by the next release.
Get off yer phone in meetings and get back to work!

Seriously though, I do the same thing at my desk. The difference is that I’m open to using a stand. Hell I kinda like the idea especially if the stand was also a wireless charger.

I can't believe I'm saying this but going to be returning my X and getting a 8 Plus. Upgraded from regular 6 Plus. I have large hands and just can't get over the downgrade in overall size - and it's thicker! Tall, narrow, awkward, notch. Otherwise an amazing phone but man am I disappointed. I think I'll be really happy with the 8 Plus with the super fast chip which is a huge upgrade from laggy 6 - and going back to black (tired of white 6+). Hopefully next year there will be a notcheless X+. I can't imagine I'm the only one greatly disappointed by the "larger" screen size essential being a gimmick.
I came from a regular 6+ too. I don’t have the same complaints as you do though. As you said the chip in both the 8 and X is super fast especially compared to the 6.

I really don’t notice the notch. My focus is on the content in the sweet spot of the screen and I only look to the notch region when I’m updating myself on my X’s status.

The screen is much better than our 6+. The real issue here is application level, not hardware. Developers are going to update their software now that they have the phone in their hands. Just like when a new XBox console is released and there aren’t many games and even less good ones, it’ll take a bit of time for the developers to catch up.

This phone is innovative and industry leading technology. With that being said this is also its first iteration. If you aren’t patient enough to be part of the changes/fixes/upgrades, you’d be better off with the old style iPhone until the entire iOS ecosystem catches up. That’ll probably be two more device updates from now. It’s not Apple’s job to update everyone else’s iOS apps to work with their hardware.

Notch is fine, dont really notice it.
Want battery percent instead of image
Hate the 'home bar' thats on every screen now.. i don't need a reminder on how to get home.
Landscape is now reminiscent of Android phones because Apple doesnt know what to do with the extra space.
A lot of apps are not optimized for it so tons of Black-Bar space on top and bottom of apps (again Android Like).
Depending on what apps you are referring to, it’s likely not Apple that doesn’t know what to do with the space. Developers for these apps need the phone in their hands to update their apps and catch up with the new technology.

Think of Microsoft and a new XBox release. It’s not Microsoft’s job to create and update every game for their system. Other companies have to create, develop, and innovate their own content for the platform. And just like a new XBox that doesn’t have many games out on launch day, iPhone app devs need some time to develop solutions.

I cannot believe I'm saying this either but I may return the X and get an 8 Plus, or Note 8. I am going to give the X a solid week of use and see where I'm at, but at this point, like you, I find the size of the screen too small: the tall, skinny screen isn't doing it for me. This, on top of the many other things I've mentioned here.

I'm typing this on a new 15" MacBook Pro, of which the keyboard sucks. I thought to myself... that it didn't seem like anyone at Apple really used this thing which is why the keyboard is bad.

Now, with the iPhone X, it's seeming to me that it's more design by committee, and less about anyone at Apple using this thing. The whole thing seems wrong. The odd size. The notch. The OLED screen with the blue tint. The camera bump is annoying...

Wow... I made it to where you started talking down the MacBook Pro keyboard and had to stop.

The new MBP keyboard has to be one of the best laptop keyboards I’ve ever used. It is fantastic.

I put a keyboard protector on it and it quieted down the keys and gave them a very slightly different feel when typing. I wasn’t looking for either of those things but I’m adaptable and the keyboard is so nice that it can take a silicon cover and still be superb.

Maybe you should try a keyboard protector out. They are made super thin, fit wonderfully, and are removable and washable. And cheap ($13 or so on Amazon and highly rated).

They need a better way to activate Control Center... perhaps they should add a 3D Touch action to the home bar... or pot little 3D Touch buttons in the bottom corners for notifications on one side and control Center on the other side... there got to be s better way... also they need to fix the status bar a bit. There is no reason they couldn’t put the battery percentage inside of the battery. It would also be extremely helpful if they could bring back some sort of alarm clock indicator, and Bluetooth if possible

I read a lot of books on iPhone and that bottom home bar is just a deal breaker. Cmon we know you swipe up to close an app. Every page of a kindle book there’s that glaring bottom bar.

Others would be battery percentage. And bit of a pain to close apps but both of these are bearable. I like Face ID. Screen is nice.

But this is going back. I’ll grab an 8 plus and hope Apple can figure this stuff out by next year. Even games have that stupid bar at bottom.

Apple won’t be figuring it out. The application developers will be. They are completely separate entities from Apple.

This is a trainwreck folks!

I wouldn't be surprised if 50% of all iPhone X sales today were from resellers playing off the Hype. I also predict a higher than usual return rate for this phone: it's terribly overpriced and is riddled with a bevy of design and technology related flaws.

I’d be willing to take you up on a bet. The users posting in this forum post are slim to none compared with the overall X user base. Check out the rest of the forum posts and the excitement on social media, along with articles about how many stood in line for this.

Almost everything that people are complaining about in this post was known before launch. I don’t get it. If some of the things people were complaining about bothered me I would have known not to order this particular phone.

I mean, come on. The notch? We ALL knew it was going to be there. And they did a great job with it. It’s just different and apparently iPhone users in this thread don’t like change.

This is what I read: “I know it makes no sense what I am doing by closing the apps and I know that it doesn’t help anything, but I want to do it and Apple should accommodate me because I’m OCD.”

Do you also close applications on your computer by killing the task in Task Manager?

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

It has become a cliche but there are so many things about this phone that Steve Jobs would not have allowed. Let's face it though under SJ we also would not have had a 4 year wait for a 1 handed keyboard on the plus iPhone.

I was gutted when I missed out of the 3rd delivery but I also thought that seeing the initial thoughts from real users would be interesting, I still have my order due next week but the more I read and watch the closer I am to just buying an 8+

Don't let others complaints deter you from getting the best device out right now. There is NO WAY I would order an 8 when the X is readily available to be ordered. In 6 months when iPhone X users are doing cool AR stuff and have their beautiful screens that they've gotten used to, you'd be stuck with an 8.

Firstly love the phone!

  1. Reachability gesture is horrid.
  2. Face ID should be able to be used to access password protected websites instead of using a password. IE much the same as opening an app that requires Face ID.
  3. Most right handed people (majority of the world) hold the phone in their left hand. I have big hands and find my index finger wanting to rest on the camera lens. The lend should be on the other side of the phone.

disagree removing Touch ID was a good idea after using face ID for about a day now. Face ID is far better than I was expecting for a first gen product.

So my battery is at 100% and when I go on safari the battery icon goes bigger and takes over the right side of the notch. When I go on any other app the right side is battery wifi and signal. I swear it showed everything on safari yesterday...

I've spent a few minutes trying to hold the phone the way I imagine you do...like a club or something lol. It's difficult!
Time will tell. I may adjust to hold with additional pinky finger or I may just turn off reachability and operate with two hands.

I’m trying to find an option in the settings to remove the swipe up to go to home after Face ID unlocks but can’t find anything. I find it’s not intuitive at all. My expectation is I pickup the phone, Face ID unlocks and take me to home screen directly and it’s faster. I can imagine Apple add this additional step to force us looking at the notification first but there at least should be an option to remove that.

Umm #2 does happen. Press the little key symbol that shows up on websites where you enter a password. Faceid then authenticates you and auto populates the password from your saved passwords. It’s fast and sweet.

Those of you complaining about it not working at your desk should get a wireless charging stand. I got this convertible one made by Samsung. When I put my phone on that, I just glance at it and it unlocks.
