I wouldn't say it is the best phone ever, but I'm mostly happy with my purchase.

Face ID works most of the time for me, but the fact that I still need to touch the phone (swipe up) to unlock means it is of limited value - Touch ID was faster and more useful for me. That said, having a home button on my iPad Pro feels antiquated already - having notifications and system controls at the top makes so much more sense. Having the bar at the bottom to swipe between apps makes more sense.

The notch has NEVER bothered me and I am pretty OCD. From the beginning I have considered it as bonus space for the time and other icons that steal real estate from the main display. As far as video/landscape is concerned, 16:9 and 4:3 fit within the curves and notch. if you are watching 2.35:1 content, you do run into the notch. But on any other iPhone you would have bars on the top and bottom so to me it is a wash.

Once I had AirPods, I never used the headphone jack on my 6s+, so the lack of one on the X is a non-issue.

The one area I would wish for improvement is the hardness of the display, My wife has had nearly every model of iPhone since the 3GS and has worn the same diamond earrings, and the X is the first one to have tiny scratches on the screen from them.

Gotcha... The standard 'I played with one in a store for a few minutes' and am now going to slam it type post. Makes complete sense (sarcasm) so rock on, I suppose...
But it is valid. First impressions matter. That applied, in my case, with the X, the 8, the touchbar on the new MBP, the lack of ports on the MBP, the keyboard....................... none of which impressed me enough to buy them. You get the idea.
Yet my SE, my 6S, my nMP, my mini, my ipad pro, those were all love at first sight.

Nope...... Maybe a valid reason for you but not for others. Ever thought you wouldn't like something and then after you tried it or used it you later found out how wrong you were? Yup, happens to everyone..

I think the Tocuhbar is a gimmick but guess what? I bought and used a 2016 Touccbar version and after 2 weeks I decided it confirmed my thoughts so I returned it.

With the X, I had concerns as well. I didn't think I'd like faceID and gestures. I was slightly concerned about the notch but guess what? I bought it and used it and surprise, surprise after a few days my concerns were alleviated. faceID is solid, gestures rock and after a day or so you don't even notice the notch anymore.

Playing with something in a store for a few minutes is not usage. Slamming something you've never owned is laughable. People can have an opinion on it but should not speak about in an 'as a matter of fact' manner and make disparaging remarks about something they've never used (no in store usage for 2 minutes does not count) or owned.

Exactly my point, thank you. As to your other question? No I haven't found out how wrong I was. I have learned over MANY years to trust my gut.

Not believable, sorry... Or you've never in your entire life tried something you thought you wouldn't like.. I didn't think I'd like Asparagus and avoided it for years. Tried it once at a restaurant and now I love the stuff..

Live a little and try things. If you don't dig it, return it or spit it out..

Don't care if you believe me or not.
Latest example was the X. Went to the Apple store because of all the hype, instantly disliked it. While there, compared it to the 8 that was right next to it. While my gut said don't buy it, I did anyway ignoring the gut. Wound up returning it 8 days later. So I do "spit it out". Another lesson learned and my gut was right. Age and experience do play a role in all the things we do.
Lets let this thread go back to the main subject, shall we?

Maybe others are instantly fully aware of all the pluses and minuses of a new product. Doesn't work for me. YMMV.

I loved the X in the store. I loved it for a couple of weeks. But about three weeks in I realized I was making a lot of accommodations that I hadn't needed to make with my 7, and after five weeks I returned it.

Similarly, I loved the rMB when it came out - it was incredibly easy to commute with, great display, all the power I needed for that role. But over the first two weeks the keyboard drove me progressively nuts. Typing speed and accuracy were not as good as the traditional keyboard, and it made my hands sore. I returned it.

My point is that I don't think first impressions in the store are necessarily valid. I've had several experiences that were the reverse of these - products that I bought almost on a dare, expecting that I would not like them, but which won me over completely. The most recent example of that is the S3 Apple Watch, which you'd have to pry off my cold, dead wrist.

I’m quite lucky that I’ve not had this dilemma about liking the X or not based on its features etc. Apple have ensured it’s not on my short list with its £1k+ price tag lol. It’s thins the choices down and will make upgrading a little easier from now on. :)

I got my X as my contract upgrade and got a good deal. I agree with the opinion it's the best phone ever. I don't notice the notch and so I can't see why people make a big thing of it. "Design fail"? Really?

Headphone socket - my 7 plus didn't have on. I admit I'm still collecting wireless headphones trying to find the ones I like best but when there was a headphone socket I collected wired headphones trying to find ones I liked.

FaceID. I think I've had to type my code in twice. I love it. It enters passwords for me just cos I'm looking at my phone. Saves so much time.

Well, the fact they are 3/4 of the price and pack the same processing power, aka future-proofing, could be a compelling arugment for the average consumer.
While the 8/8+ may not seem dated today, the next few years will see iOS adapting to function without the button. As that happens, the older style phones will start to become less compatible with all of the gestures and general interface of the new configuration. That’ll be extremely annoying for those who laid out 3/4 of the price for a device that Apple will be slowly walking away from.

The 8 and 8+ are phones that should have never been released. They were never worth buying over the 7 series, considering the price and spec difference.

Exactly , whether it’s price, form, or function you don’t need to own it to know you don’t want it.

For example, I can either test drive a car if it’s in my price range and decide that I don’t like it, or I could just buy it and ‘get used’ to it or try and take it back, most don’t need that many data points to make their decision.

Why can't people just buy what they want and be happy to let others discuss the phone they want? I know it's the internet and all but...........

Maybe I should start posting in every 8 Plus thread that I think it's an old looking ginormous dinosaur? Nah, they bought it for their reasons so I'll let them enjoy it and discuss it in peace.

I did think of the car comparison earlier when someone mentioned opinions can’t be valid from first impressions. I tend to test drive a car before I buy them simply to save wasting thousands of pounds. I once bought a car my wife hated and it cost me £2k in 4.5 hours. I’d never do that again lol.

You could do that, or you could argue your point in threads like this that make bold claims and are open to debate? It’s a discussion forum after all.

A car comparison is an absolute terrible analogy..... Thats what happens to every X thread they get insanely blown out of proportion with comparisons that make no sense whatsoever. Someone a while back photoshopped the notch on a TV as an example..

I know I don't like the way, lets say a Kia looks, so I agree based on that I don't buy it but then again I don't go to Kia forum asking others why the heck they'd buy that and put down their car either..

If you know you don't like the look of the X then cool.. Move on to something you do like.

Do people think Tim Cook is going to read their post here and say oh my user_1254 is not going to buy the X because they don't like the notch. Pick up his phone, make a call and cancel the notch because user_1254 said they didn't like it?

Do you have an X? Really do you? Did you have all the other phones previously? Those had bars on the top and bottom. This notch is really a none issue after a while, you don't notice it.
Every time I see an iPhone X, which is very rare, I think of the Samsung commercial with the guy standing in line pre-launch with a notch haircut.

If the notch stays, I will be moving to,a different phone. A feature you have to get used to isn't a feature. It's a design flaw.

You have a 7 I see, you have a bar at the top and the bottom. Obviously it never bothered you. So why does the notch bug you so much.

The car analogy is silly because a choice of mobile phone can be decided in minutes whereas choosing a car takes research, time and peace of mind seeing as it’s a major purchase with huge depreciating value. I can pick up a mobile phone and know in a few minutes of using it whether I want to buy it or whether I can live with certain trade offs. My car choices take weeks and countless spec comparisons and test drives. So yes it is silly, but the purchasing to decide argument put forward was what the main point was, not the actual product in question.

I sense here you only want certain iPhone users commenting? That’s tough though. We are all members of this forum because we love the iPhone. It’s nothing like going on forums of brands we don’t like and trolling. There is no rule to say we are only allowed to discuss releases we personally own or have a cut off point where non-owners have to exit stage left. No doubt i’ll own an iPhone with current X features at some point. I’m an iPhone user and have been for quite a few years now. The iPhone X pissed a lot of us off in all honesty. I waited years for a new design and i’ll be honest it has disappointed me based on its sudden high price and lack of wow factor, my opinion of course. I will share my opinion on it and it’s anybody else’s choice whether they want to read it or not. It’s as simple as that.

People can post wherever and whatever they chose it just gets tiresome when the same is posted over and over again and in every X thread there is.. Is there a place for the hate? Sure but should not be in every X thread in existence...

Find me a single X thread that hasn't been spiraled out of control by the haters....

What do you expect though with arguably the most divisive iPhone design in its 10 year history?

You’re stoking a bit of the fire too by referring to people like me as a ‘hater’. That’s quite a strong label for somebody that buys the same iPhone brand you do. I’ve said many times if the X was cheaper I’d buy it, so it’s slightly strange hating something I’d buy don’t you think?
