I totally disagree. The notch has always been a non issue for the magnificence of this beautiful phone
Okay, but the notch on the iPhone X and the top/bottom bezel on the iPhone 7 do not compare. One impedes the screen area where Apple had to re-adjust content, the other does not.

I can't see the bars at the top or bottom. They flow with the phone. The notch screams design flaw.

You don't see these bars?

The X has none of those massive bars...

Yes, of course I know they are there. As I said, they flow with the phone and don't inturupt the screen. The notch is a design flaw, imo.

They are not massive, imo.

I have a problem putting an iPhone 8 down on a table next to an iPhone 6 and not being able to tell a difference..

That doesn't bother me. I would not care if the design of the phone ever changed. It's what is on the inside. Apple tried to get fancy and we got the notch.

Not missing the point at all.. One has ginormous bezels and smaller screen and the other does not...

Which was not the point of the original discussion. The original point was the notch impedes the display area and Apple had to re-adjust content, not which phone had smaller bezels. You're making this a debate about something that it's not. Anyone with a working pair of eyeballs can tell which phone has the smaller bezel.

What do you expect though with arguably the most divisive iPhone design in its 10 year history?

You’re stoking a bit of the fire too by referring to people like me as a ‘hater’. That’s quite a strong label for somebody that buys the same iPhone brand you do. I’ve said many times if the X was cheaper I’d buy it, so it’s slightly strange hating something I’d buy don’t you think?

Exactly, that’s what the X defense force don’t get, we have Apple products, we’ve bought into the ecosystem, we’re not ‘haters’ just happy with our own views unlike those who seek constant verification through Internet forums.

So if you want a perfect rectangular display, then you have to take the one with the smaller screen. If the notch doesn't hinder your experience, the X is the one. Personally, I'll take all of that screen real estate, even with the notch, over the smaller, perfect rectangle display. Too much screen to be bothered by the notch.

Or constantly complain about something they don't own...... LOLOL

Exactly.. They'd rather have a smaller screen with ginormous bezels than a 1.2mm notch.. Mind baffling really..

You're making an assumption about what I want, when I never said what I want. I'd much rather have the X even with its notch, but I'm also entitled to agree that it's a (necessary given current tech abilities) design flaw.

I don't see it as a design flaw. All the apps I use have been updated for the notch and Apple has said all new apps coming into the store have to conform to the X design,... As more and more apps meet the standard the notch will become less and less an issue for some.. Some will never be happy no matter what.

I know I’m not included in this assumption but the notch does look bigger than 1.2mm. Did you mean to type 12mm? Even then I’d say its probably 6 or 7mm at a guess. If it was 1.2mm it would barely be noticeable.

I would say you narrowed it down fairly succinct. The notch and developers are improving all the time with applications that are conforming to the design of the iPhone X and no matter what, you still have those who will never be happy with the notch in its existence. I have said it before, the Internet is nothing more than a small minority with a strong vocal opinion, especially for those who frequent tech sites. Outside a tech forum, I have not heard one complaint about anyone with the notch anecdotally.

Could not agree more. My iPhone 7 Plus hardly ever recognized my fingerprint due to my hands coming to contact with things and burning my fingers sometimes so my fingerprint is not that accurate and I had enough of Touch ID recognizing my fingerprint 30% of the time. Face ID ... just works ... literally the phone gives just enough light to perfectly unlock my phone and banking apps, etc. Every. Single. Time. Without fail.

Samsung Note 8 (N) vs iPhone X (X)

Screen and display: N
Software: Draw (D)
Battery: N
Speed and performance: D
Filing system: N
Customisation: N
Camera: D but nod to X due to 60FPS
Multitasking: N
Headphone jack: N
Speakers: X
Biometrics security: X
Features: N by a country mile
Apps: X

Final score:

N: 7
X: 4
D: 2

The X is not the best phone ever made. The N trumps it. All you need to do is youtube a 100 videos about the N v X and see for yourself. I doubt the X is even the best iPhone ever made. Is a science grad in 2018 a better scientist that Einstein just because the grad has access to current information and methods?

The X is garbage.

From an unbiased iphone user.

That is all.

The X is not the best phone ever made. [...] The X is garbage.

From „not the best phone ever made“ to „garbage“ is a pretty huge leap lol. Especially when you have listed only a single phone that you think is better than the X. So every phone that offers objectively less than the X is garbage too? Good to know that I‘ve been using „garbage phones“ (iPhones) the last couple years.

I mean many points on your list are highly subjective and would need at least some details on how you quantify them to call one of these devices better than the other. For example, you claim the Note wins in the multitasking category yet many people would claim that the gesture control on the X is superior and significantly more intuitive than the software home and back buttons on the Note which are essentially the classical hardware buttons but slapped into the software.

The software is also a deciding factor for many people and whether you prefer Android or iOS. And if you‘re already in Apple‘s ecosystem or not. Someone who wants his device to work well with his other 5 Apple products and likes iOS more will judge the Android experience on the Note inferior, and vice versa.

Unbiased?
There is no such thing
We ALL have our preferences, opinions, history, background and more
Proclaiming yourself to be unbiased doesn't make it true, in fact it emphasizes you aren't :)

I have sat on getting a new phone for a while now because everything for me is off the mark, the X moreso.

The best $1000 "garbage" I've ever owned.

If you had any change from buying that piece of crap, I'd tell you to go buy yourself a medal. But oh well, sucks to be X.

My favourite in the news lately has been. “Android vendors mock the notch on Apples new iPhone. Users blast it as ugly and ungainly.”

To “Android vendors releasing bezel free phones with notch knock off”

Seriously, I very much doubted it to feel as good as it does now - but after owning it for a few weeks, I am convinced that there is no going back. Picking up an iPhone 8 feels heavily dated now. The screen is just so good. Face ID has worked flawlessly under nearly every condition for me thus far and is just more convenient and faster (for me) than Touch ID. True Tone is a true luxury. Blacks are actually black. Eliminating the home button just feels so natural now. Apple has always been the king of gestures, starting with MacBooks, so it just makes perfect sense. I never thought the notch would be a problem but I'd rather it be there than not if it meant having a taller phone or compromising in any other way. Plus I'm confident that it's size will shrink and eventually be eliminated. Either way, I don't care, it doesn't bother me as is.

I am not brand-loyal. If there was a better phone, I'd be using it. I gotta say, the (smaller) Pixel 2 is also a really great phone. If I cared about saving money but still getting an excellent phone, Pixel 2 all the way. But it's so plain and still feels like Android felt five years ago for the most part. And the XL variant has noticeable screen issues. The S8 is an impressive phone as well but it still just doesn't have the polished software experience that the Pixel has (and IMO the X trumps both of them by a long shot in the polish department). While the Pixel has come incredibly close in what it would take for me to switch from iOS to Android, it's just not there yet. The X just set the bar even higher for fluidity between hardware and software.

I don't know who or what this thread is for. Maybe it's for someone on the fence of whether $1K for a phone is worth it. If you're GOING to buy an 8 or 8 Plus and you plan on keeping it for 3-5 years, don't - get the X. The extra amount of $ is worth it for a phone you're going to keep a long time anyway. Obviously if you're in over your head already in consumer debt and are bad with money in general, don't be buying $500+ phones. But for those who were going for a "flagship" phone anyway and it makes sense for them - trust me, the X is that much better. I'm personally coming from a 6, and I keep my phones for 4+ years, so the 8 didn't feel like that much of an upgrade.
