You should consider yourself lucky to be able to exchange or return the iPhone with a cosmetic defect. In HK there are no returns for anything apart for hardware defect.

There are facts and there are emotions.

Facts:
- Apple has the highest customer sat in the industry. Hence QC must also be excellent because bad QC would certainly affect customer sat.
- Apple pays way better than average wages in China and audits working conditions much more than any other company producing there or anywhere else that’s comparable.
- In industrial mass production, there is no such thing as perfection. You will always have a certain amount of manufacturing issues, especially when your standards are sky-high and tolerances super-low like Apple‘s are.

Oh... really?

This thread explains perfectly why we have to pay so much for Apple Products.

Of course, the usual Bla. It's not Apple (who are greedy af) it's the customer who wants a product which is not damaged out of the box. How dare I...

If you can wait a month or so when demand get less than the quality control will automatically improve. Right now they must be making really fast. So it’s best for you to wait a little.

From what I've experienced with the iPhone 8, units produced in weeks 40-41 (October) seemed much better than those produced in weeks 36-37 (September), so for those not in a rush to buy an iPhone X it's probably wise to wait a month or two.

You Sir are Apples dream customer. Pay full price, expect "just ok, it works". Apple shows on keynotes in long videos how extremely tasty the device materials look, how well everything is built and bla. And when you open the box your premium built device has dents, shadows on the back, scratches on the screen etc. For me this is not acceptable.

And then for the 1300€ I have the hassle of returning, being on the telephone with Apple for an hour or longer, wait AGAIN due to limited supplies and so on.

Guess what, some people are not concerned about tiny marks that you can barely see with a magnifying glass.
Big deal you spend $1300 on an item. Some of you act like its the biggest money investment decision of your life and treat a phone like precious/rare jewelry.
Its a phone, it will get scratches, dents, marks and dropped from daily use.
You want to stress and go crazy over a few tiny production marks then go for it but dont try to act like others are crazy because they dont share the same OCD obsessions as you.

It all depends on the relation. 1300€ for a smartphone is a big deal. The price signalizes "best of the best". This is where Apple wants to place this phone. And this does not mean scratches and dents out of the box. It's as simple as this.

On the photos it seems very small but believe me, you see it every single time you look at the phone. The metal frame surrounds the display very elegant and the little nick in this surrounding is very noticable.
I will probably keep this phone as I don't want to return/exchange. It's not worth time and effort. BUT that does not mean I can understand nor support this level of QC.

No it doesn't signalize best of the best or any other nonsense that your false sense of OCD elite perfectionism claims are. Its a mass produced by the millions smartphone made in Chinese subhuman condition factories with cheap labor and low skilled workers that get overworked with tons of hours of labor per day and stacked together in tiny rooms like sardines. And many of those workers commit suicide and jump out the window to their death due to the stress and pressure to bring you your precious "best of the best"smartphone on release day and keep up with demand. That's the reason they included security measures on windows and installed nets to deter some of those suicides at factories.
So save the nonsense. What you showed in that pic is not a dent, its a tiny nick. Get over it or return it for the 3rd time and put each phone under a microscope as soon as you open it.
Happy Thanksgiving, be thankful for what you have cause others out there have it a lot harder and wish their life problems were about tiny marks on the side of their $1300 smartphone.

The theory exists on a tech forum that some choose to wait to purchase their devices later on after the initial rush for a newly released product, which they believe they receive a better manufactured device that will have less issues because production slows down. I'm not opposed to not necessarily believing that, but I also have not had any issues with launch day devices either.
Yes the launch day ones are also good and that’s also the reason i try to get new iPhones on launch days.

That is utter BS and you know that.

If you want to discuss REAL problems and not this first world stuff go to another board which is not about Apple products.

But in reverse that does not mean that a highly overpriced product is supposed to come damaged out of the box.

just keep in mind that it’s a glass phone and will show micro scratches
The stainless steel band is Unfortunately. Not scratch resistant and doesn’t seem to have much other than cosmetic appearance
Apple could have used a better grade of stainless stee.
Be careful

Apple will choose the optimal level of QC for their bottom line - which will be considerably less than perfect to the keen eye (albeit considerably better than the competition). They know that there will be people out there like the OP and myself who notice small imperfections and get annoyed by them, and will exchange them as a result, but that’s still the most profitable path for Apple compared with making near-perfect products all the time.

This thread explains perfectly why we have to pay so much for Apple Products.
Oh come on, the obsessive crew are a drop in the ocean and are easily offset by the millions and millions of people who don’t know or don’t care about scratches on their iPhone.

The stainless steel used on the silver iPhone X bands is nearly identical to the 316 L stainless used on the Apple Watch. Most need to understand stainless scratches and scuffs, it's not just about the quality of steel Apple issuing. The stainless proprieties in general are known to scratch, but fortunately can be removed for the most part with a Cape Cod Cloth.

Both dents I had in the phones out of the box were on the edge of the metal frame, so the is kind of a gap which cannot be buffed out. This is sad because a normal scratch I would have buffed out with my cape cod without hesitation and never worried about it.

As the title says I received my second iPhone X with a small dent in the metal frame. The first one had a dent in the frame in the back of the phone. The new one has a little dent on the left side on the front of the phone. Am I the only one with such bad luck? The device is 1300€ in Germany and it came damaged out of the box in two of three orders. The third had a speck of dust in the camera.
What is wrong with Apple? Has anyone else having received a damaged iPhone X?
It's not Apple's fault, it's Made in China. Apple needs to look into replacing Foxconn.

Apple describes it as Surgical Stainless Steel. What is that?

It's likely just a regular grade of stainless steel, but it's not been identified what exact property
Of stainless that is. But in comparison, it's very similar to the same 316 L stainless steel used on the Apple Watch, which looks great, but scratches very easily.

But isn't 316L used on Rolex and Panerai watches as well? That grade of stainless steel looks great on those brand watches.

Any mass produced product, no matter what the cost is, is going to have some production issues. Doesn’t matter what it is. No amount of money asked for this will change that.
You have failed to listen to reason from other members and return your scratched model for an replacement (one that would be gracefully offered at no charge).

This thread has lost its usefulness and therefore is being requested for wasteland.

If I'm not mistaken, both those brands use a higher grade of stainless than 316 L. 904 L stainless is much more expensive to manufacture as well.

If you're not interested just ignore it! It's not you who states what I have failed or not. I know what to do. Trust me. My point was that I received (and paid) three out of three faulty iPhone X, THE iPhone of all iPhones, precision made etc. It's not. And for the price point is a shame.

IMO, threads "use their usefulness" when ppl stop posting in them, and they naturally sink off the bottom of the page...

So... I decided to return my silver iPhone X due to the scratch and order a SG iPhone X. It arrived yesterday. Today i noticed during normal usage that there is a really visible bulge on the right side where the ON/OFF Switch is. I started to examine the phone an found that the right side of the display looks like it is popping out in the middle. Maybe the battery is getting bigger... WOW. Just wow.

Oh please, again no pictures! Oh, and by the way, the pictures you posted showing the small dent are of a used phone - I can see a screen protector, and a lot of dust - who knows what you have done with the phone! Next time post pics right out of the box, or nobody will believe this.
