I've been complaining about "flat design" for quite a while; after all, the world is NOT flat. I've also been bitching for several years about the creation of OS X CRAYON.

Flat design won't exist in my life. I skeuomorphed the heck out of my Mac and various other devices. It's not easy to find such apps/widgets these days since Apple pulls such apps or makes them impossible to find in the App Store but it's still possible.

yikes, my eyes. flat is so cool; modern, minimalist, functional. why do people want their apps to look like things from the past? anyway, impressive... for what it is.

OK, Junk is over the top. Catalina is just unacceptable as an Apple OS release.

and yet, many people are using it without issue (or, without any major issues). so, the world hasn't ended. for macrumors people, this is just the 2020 version of every other year... when ppl post as if the world had ended. and this will all repeat with 10.16 (ad infinitum). it's what we do on these forums...

This one is a lot worse than previous releases, while other releases had bugs this one has major bugs that impact workloads, and are capable of bringing the whole system down - for example the SMB bug (which is fixed now), that meant if a user had been working on something, and went to save, they wouldn't be able to and lose their work - and then the whole machine would crash...

The bugs in this release have really only effected enterprise customers.

Some of us like our apps to look like the things we use in real life; for example, I still use a Day Timer and the example in the above post is a reasonable approximation.

right, but it's 2020; why should apps look like something from the 20th century (except as novelty)? but perhaps, to be fair, it would be great if apple gave us some GUI options (so very unlike apple).

anyway, if you have a day timer, why do you need your macs calendar to look like one?

The 10.15.3 combo update seemed to help a lot with my freezing issues. Maybe it will help with "some" of the issues some of you are having.

The fact that it's 2020 is a specious argument at best. That's like saying that because the design of shotguns built in 2020 is different from the one I own from 1914 that I should no longer use mine and get one made in 2020.

To the second part, some of us prefer that the appearance of the things we use to be consistent for ease of use.

isn't the GUI currently extremely consistent? and why would you drive a car from 1945, or wear glasses made in 1887, or... you get the idea.

if you like an 'old' look for your apps, you can find apps that look... old. no harm in it.

I personally find skeuo apps more fun to use. It's not that I can't use a flat app, I just prefer the look and feel of a skeuo app.

That said, it's funny that we have screens capable of rendering beautiful 3D yet all we see is blinding white with black text 90% the time. Some of us, well, to coin an old phrase, "Think Different"

I know many here think flat is modern but me being as old as I am, I've seen flat before. in the 80s. Look at Amiga WorkBench 1.5, or DOS. Flat. It feels outdated and 'done before' to me.

you have a mac with a 3D screen? impressive.

anyway, these things keep changing, so who knows what the GUI will look like over the next several years...

Capable of 3D graphics (as in games) not actual 3D as in holography. Flat design these days is like buying a 4K TV and only watching 480p content on it. Flat was done before and still feels like a throwback to the '80s. That was due to hardware limits, of course. What's the excuse today? Because it's "different" and we ran out of ideas to improve the UI? What's next? a console interface like DOS? We can't possibly go any flatter.

They won't change for me as long as I have a say in the matter on my personal devices :)

I just don't want to go back to flat. I've been there before:

There is just a page of people posting issues with new replies every few minutes. Is catalina as bad as it looks form this forum?

I was going to install it but now i am not so sure at all.

Thanks!

It's even worse than that!! ;)

i know your screen isn't actually 3D. but i gotta say, i completely disagree with you; flat design these days is like buying a 4K TV and watching 4K content on it. why would anyone go back to a picture tube tv? and a notes app (for example) with (shudder) yellow-lined pages and a torn page? am glad we've moved past that.

some of us prefer to move forward, not backward. apple, obviously, as well.

I just think the skeuo apps are more fun. Turning a volume 'knob' with multi-touch, or a remote app on my Galaxy S5 that looks (and feels, with haptics) like a real remote, but with the versatility of a smartphone. The phone or tablet literally transforms to whatever device you need through an app.

Flat could be done on a mono e-paper display. Why do we have retina truetone again?

They're just more delightful to use in my view. It's not like I'm on a mission to force everyone to comply. I'm just bored of every app looking the same, and burning my retinas. You do you and I'll do me.

But what comes after it? Are we stuck forever in flat-land? Won't we get sick of it like we did skeuomorphism? How do you go flatter without devolving to a command line? Although the thought of vector-graphic games like Missile Command coming back would be kinda neat.

I bought my first computer in '82, and worked with mainframes using punch cards in the 70s; the current "flat" trend is, as you said, "been there, done that". Then again, everything old is new again. I'm constantly seeing the children adopting fads that we went through in the 80s (think ripped jeans and "friendship bracelets (though I doubt they call them that)) and I can't help but think "Why??!!" It was bad enough when we did it; there's absolutely no reason to bring it back. (I so seem to remember a resurgence of the ripped jeans fad in the late 90s as well. Another 90s fad I see coming back is the overalls and wife beater -- WHY?????

As P.T. Barnum said there is one born every minute, a sucker, most people are stupid sheep who will follow the lead without hesitation. All it takes is for it to be called the new latest and greatest thing since sliced bread. Then they will line up and willing throw their money at it to be owning the next cool thing. As has been proved countless times against the old adage, those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it, nothing is more true than that and humans have the attention span of virtually nothing when remembering the past. Even when presented with undeniable evidence it happened they will still cling to the garbage in their heads, like the holocaust deniers or the flat earth people, climate change, God the list is so long.....

No real issues with my new Mac. I upgraded to Catalina right after and so far only minor issue like some software is not yet supported but I can live with this. Otherwise looks good.

Just an exemple of how Apple laziness is : Just a minor bug like the keyboard shortcut for inverting colours not working after the computer is on sleep mode for a long session still not fixed in 10.15.3 just show how bad macOS Catalina is. Its still not polished and feel like a beta software. I still have the same problems I had in .0 release, its not normal. In top of that Apple takes months to release a single update like everything is totally normal.

is the SMB bug really fixed in 10.15.3?
