Is Catalina as bad as it looks on this board?

An actual fact is that many people will have issues if they update their OS when it first comes out.

People need to accept this fact if they decide to load it when it is released. That is not to say that they will have any issues but there is a higher probability of having issues.

If someone's current version is working fine, why load the new one when it first comes out ?

As far as waiting for a specific version release, I said wait for the forth release before installing it since following that advice has worked for me in the past (i.e. it was my opinion and if you don't like it feel free to ignore it). If someone wants the most probable bug free release, they will wait until a new OS is released and then load the final release for the previous OS version.

of course there are issues, especially with a radical change (ie dropping 32bit app support); was like this moving from the ppc era (etc).

but, if you look closely, every version, beta, official release... has issues for people. the OS is always a work in progress, and one updates when one is ready (or, lol... sooner).

Just as long as the people installing it are aware of what they are getting and the problems they will most likely encounter.

To me, Mojave works fine and will be supported for awhile, Why install Catalina right now ?

you can install it when you're ready. or never. or tuesday. it's a choice (and choice is a good thing). meanwhile, am enjoying 10.15 right now...

a few emails i deleted were not retrievable... so no, the sky has not fallen. haven't tested this yet on the 10.15.1 public beta yet. thanks for your concern!

EDIT: i can't 'command-z' to restore a deleted email, but the email itself seems fine now (i'd lost content prior to the .1 beta). all is well

There is just a page of people posting issues with new replies every few minutes. Is catalina as bad as it looks form this forum?

Just use the wait-one-year-then-upgrade method. Learned that one when Apple broke both TimeMachine and Wifi a couple of years ago. This strategy has served us well.

MBP 2017. Hardly any 3rd party software installed apart from ms office & spotify.

My experience has been good, apart from:

Had to manually reboot halfway through the installation as it seemingly as it got stuck itself on a reboot.

Apart from that, it’s fine.

On reading around the issues, the problem seems to be with older software and software with hooks into the apps (iTunes) and ‘infrastructure’ that Apple has changed in Catalina.

Next time around, I think we’ll see a lot of UI and behaviours in macOS that are more similar to iPadOS and Catalina is probably a bit of clear air turbulence as MacOS moves in that direction.

And finally, Apple are obviously running into serious difficulties now with the September ‘new iPhone’ marketing driven approach. They seriously need to rethink this approach before a reputation of buggy software starts to stick on them. And it’s completely their own fault that they are getting close to this outcome.

On my late 2013 MBP, this is the first OS update that's had insurmountable issues. I could not resolve the "update iCloud" issue and I could not see/connect other computers on my network. After two days of wasted time, I restored a backup of Mojave.

Other than the "Show filter field" not sticking in the Music app, I have had ZERO problems.

So nobody else is experiencing freezing forcing a hard shut down? I just got my 2019 i9 iMac a month ago. Is it the hardware? I experience freezing at least once a day. On Mojave it never froze for the entire month.

No major problems on my 2017 iMac and 2018 MBP. I did get the enter Apple ID password loop thing on both but signing out & back in again fixed that. One of my apps needs a 64-bit upgrade and Agenda Widget+ is getting dates wrong but all other apps seem fine. I'm happy I upgraded.

I was on my machine, but I wouldn't expect it on your beast! That really is poor.

2nd day on my Mac Mini and aside from Apple now saying Mac Mini users should not update to Catalina I have had zero issues, some things not to my taste sure but working as they are intended. Hopefully, they can just sort out the video issues which I suspect is why they are telling users not to upgrade.

Running Catalina on a MacBook Pro 2015 15 and a MacBook Air 2015 13 without problems so far. I just hope they keep improving the Music App.

Not for me it isn't.
Not even remotely close to anything I read about on here and I have installed this on close to a dozen machines, all different hardware.
From 2012, 2014,2018 Minis, some with eGPU's (I have 3 different eGPU setups to test with). 2013, 2015, 2019 iMacs, iMac Pro, and several MacBook Pros from 2015, 2018, 2019 and the only semi-annoying thing was throughout the dev preview some of my iCloud folder got renamed with numbers added on.
Once it happened twice, I waited until release and renamed the folders and all normal on my end again.

I just can't find a compelling reason to install it. I don't care about SideCare and I'm fine with iTunes. Is there anything else really noteworthy about Catalina over Mojave that makes this OS different?

This release is embarrassing:
-can't sync my music w/o being deleted from my phone
-can't download updates for Xcode or 'insert other needed update'
-waiting for next 'upgrade' to give me another face palm moment

I buy (bought?) Macs for their reliability and that they work without, too many questions. Satya Nadella or (insert other start up?/competitor) and his folks are likely high-fiving about this and rightly so. Tim Cook/his staff saying this is ready or not thinking for green lighting this?

Who said ship it? The intern? Really?

Give me an os that downloads updates and doesn't mess up my music. Write unit tests/integration tests. Stop focusing on just iOS or the next shiny object and focus!

I've been using Catalina since Dev beta 3 and the only issue I have encountered is that Mail does not sync Sent messages. Other than that, it's very stable and snappy. But I understand that its a hit and miss for some users. Apple still has some critical bugs in their compiler chain I've been reporting for months, with not a single reply from them. Their software quality control is at its lowest, as it seems.
