I don't know about you people but I feel like the 2020 iPhone will be a very boring update.

Not a boring update if you've done what I did, and upgrade after like 3-4 years. Honestly, I'm so satisfied with going from 4 to 6s to 11, both upgrades were fantastic.

I think the fact remains that every update is boring if you’ve had the previous years phone. If you’re upgrading every 2 or 3 years, it delivers more. Enthusiasts who upgrade every year are not common in the grand scheme and I don’t think even Apple expects most people to do so. They offer their iUP for these types of people who aren’t worried about paying out more for their hobby.

I think it will be the most exciting iPhone year since the iPhone X launch back in 2017.
In my opinion, the upcoming 5.4" model could have the potential for a turnaround concerning the trend towards bigger phones.

I recently went back to my 11 pro max after using the s20+ and boy does it feel sluggish in comparison.

It might not be just the 60hz difference and it could also be that I am using ios14 beta but I found it really jarring.

The S20 is impressive. Seriously, if Samsung can just tweak a few things with the U.I, there really isn’t much to harp on them anymore, as the hardware has been the pinnacle for years, and now they just need some more battery regulation and then core development With stability, it’s a solid device.

That's not totally true. Iphone 7/7 Plus to X was a HUGE HUGE upgrade. Complete shift away from Touch ID and big forehead and chin around an LCD to all display OLED

I wouldnt expect that again 3 years later. I do expect some progression of technology though. We have the same notch as that 2017 iphone and same screen refresh rate. If Apple, worth over $1.9 trillion, cant shrink the notch even few millimeters in 4 model years, what does that say about the tech or future with it? To me that says its a dead end/stopgap technology; unless cameras get under display, which isnt happening in the next year or 2 even. That tech has been tried and has many issues still to work out.

I dont know of one company that has stuck with facial recognition tech- Google and Huawei both abandoned it (and Samsung although that wasnt 3D scanning) I just dont think the tradeoffs to design with all of the extra sensors needed were worth it to them.

There is PLENTY they could do to make a "non-boring" update that other companies seem to have figured out in even less expensive devices. If the rumors are true I truly think Apple is banking on people upgrading "because Apple" this year. Slapping 5G and LIDAR (both questionable useful function right now) isnt impressive at all with the usually incremental spec bump and camera quality bump.

That's unfortunate too. As per above, Samsung is REALLY bringing the heat no matter how much I have mocked them in the past (those stupid Applebashing ads) if you want a flagship. The S20/Note 20 line is really good this year and has every option available. And there are a ton of mid-rangers that offer a lot of what the iPhone does (maybe not raw horsepower but does having a Geekbench over a laptop mean anything really?) plus some like tiny hole punch, 90/120hz, 5G, etc. for 1/2-2/3 the price

And no this isnt an anti-Apple rant. More of a disappointment story after using iphones since the 3GS upgrading yearly. But its getting a bit old seeing people pass Apply by advancing technology and for less money.

It’s generally true with exception to anniversary years and those that deliver an entirely new form factor. I’m not someone who pays over the odds for a phone in all honesty and totally refuse to join the £1k+ iPhone club. I’ll be happy with an iPhone 12 Max this year with most of the flagship features on. I can live without lidar and 120hz displays along with stainless steel bezels and third cameras. I’ve been more impressed with the iPhone XS and 11 than the pro iPhones these last few years and if the 12 maintains this standard then that is plenty to satisfy my tech needs.

I agree with you on Apples lacklustre delivery over the past 5 years. It’s always the bare minimum and Android doesn’t matter as iPhone users don’t have an option other than iPhones do they? I like the OS more than the hardware and i’ll be honest my Apple Watch is more exciting than my iPhone anyway.

"Boring update" is completely subjective so it's impossible to answer your question. There's no absolute truth when it comes to inanimate objects.

If its boring to you don't buy it. If you like Samsung phones better, get one of those. No one's self identity should be tied up in what phone they use. They're tools, nothing more.

I agree, especially in terms of how someone might view a keynote, any future product releases. But when you look at phone preference, they’re (Consumers) are not tied to the phone itself, it’s the ecosystem. That’s what Apple is so good at, is tethering the consumer into multiple products that all share the same platform. Basically, you’re committing to the platform, not the product.

Years ago I used to get really excited at the thought of a redesigned phone. Fast forward to now and there is only so much you can do with a phone design. It seems like the iPhone12 will be a bit of a retread of the 4 for people who were too young to experience it the first time. Its also been on the iPad Pro for quite some time as well so its not like we don't know what to expect.

I had considered upgrading from my 11 Pro and giving that to my wife but honestly I feel like I would just be throwing money away. I doesn't sound like it will offer hardly anything over what I have now, and we haven't even made any real use of certain existing features yet (Ultra wideband chip).

Will the iPhone 11 Pro Max drop in value more than a normal Iphone now that it has an ‘older’ design vs the upcoming 12?

Well based off the rumors we are getting it seems like a slightly boring upgrade for me coming from the X which I held out from the 11 pro because I was expecting a little more of a design change regarding the notch. I will benefit in other areas with screen size, camera, battery, etc. if I do upgrade based off the current rumors.

The notch never bothered me but it would be nice if they could shrink it a little more. If so, along with the body design and smaller bezels (hopefully), I will be upgrading this fall. Samsung and others are leaps/bounds ahead in this department and it looks nice. I also like new note 20 curved edges that give it that infinity edge. I know apple will not go that route for now, but I would welcome that in the future.

I actually don’t like curve edges. Costs more to replace and a pain in the butt to find good glass screen protector

This is what I was reasonably expecting for this years iPhone 12 Pro Max:

-Smaller Notch
-Smaller / No Bezels
-Design Update: Flat Edges as Rumoured
-120Hz @ Full Resolution
-Bigger Battery + Higher Efficiency
-A14
-Camera Upgrades
-Speaker Upgrades / Enhancements
-5G
-True 10-Bit Display
-Larger Option: 6.7”

I think this list would have given us a solid iPhone update.

But what’s now likely to be included?

-Design Update

Well, we’ve had the X, XS Max & 11 Pro Max on the same design & it seems we’re only going to get a iPad like flat sides change here.

It’s a real shame if the bezels / notch aren’t reduced after 3 years because that could mean another 1-3 years before we see this.

-A14 & Camera Upgrades

I think this is the most expected upgrades anyway if there’s a new phone launch.

I hope they’re substantial.

-5G

A given now that it’s been around a little and availability is actually really good here in the UK and the major cities that I live in & travel too.

It’s not just the speed but the reduction in latency which is impressive here.

-Larger Phone - 6.7”

I’m probably in the minority that I don’t mind large phones.

A lot of media consumption is on my phone so it makes sense.

I’ve had a S20 Ultra alongside my 11 Pro Max and I can absolutely live with a 6.9” display in the phone due to the smaller bezels so foot print isn’t much bigger.

So a 6.7” is welcome for the iPhone and I think 6.9 / 7” is probably the limit for a phone if you truly make it edge to edge all round.

- 8+2 FRC for “10-bit”

I would be disappointed if the display didn’t get true 10-bit but one way it will probably get this update.

All in all, I think the 12 Series could have a been a special release this year,

But it’s turned into a massive disappointment like the year itself for the release of the iPhone!

P.S. I have a midnight green iPhone however even though Blue is one of my favourite colours, the Navy Blue just isn’t really appealing or “premium” if that’s the new rumoured colour Apple choose!

A bronze would be cool, or a platinum.

We already have Gold & Silver!

What does everyone think?

Well as a general advice, don’t have too many expectations as we all don’t know what’s really going to be in the box.

Folks here tend to fantasise for a year and come up with all sets of ideas. It’s a global pandemic out there. Many businesses stopped working for a while. Plans change. Nothing was promised. Phones are a mature technology and the last few years saw incremental updates mostly.

For me the biggest disappointment would be not releasing the 5.4 iPhone.

Arguably, any iPhone released will be a disappointment until it supports some form of Touch ID again. Face ID has become a major chore for me when wearing a mask which is pretty much all the time when outside now. It's gotten so annoying I bought an SE2 to use when I'm not at home and need quick access to my phone. I don't see things changing anytime soon either re: Covid, because, 'Murica.

No excuse for Apple to still be on this BS 3 year design change cycle. Apple not implementing some form of Touch ID by the time 2021 iPhones launch is just stubbornness and laziness.

I love Face ID and think it is far superior to Touch ID. But given the times, Apple needs to adapt and knock off its stubbornness.

Maybe it’s you but Face ID seems to work with a mask.
