If they weren't ugly why is Apple removing them in iPhone 7?
At a guess I would say because they have a way of utilising the antenna in a different way. When the iPhone 6 came out the most effective way of maintaining a strong signal was to have visible antenna lines on the back of the phone. After all they chose lines rather than hiding the antenna behind glass panels like they did with the iPhone 5. This year they may have a more discreet method but who knows?

What makes you think Apple thought they were ugly? Changing the design does not mean the previous iteration was ugly at all. It's called progressive design.

Feel free you ask them yourself, although I suspect you know better anyway.

Yea, I understand how multitasking works. I also understand that the iPhone walks all over Samsung in multitasking. We have a couple of Galaxy users in our office. They buy into the bright and shiny. We run impromptu test. Of course in the big scheme of things, it really doesn't matter, except Sammys are not superior devices.

I never mentioned battery life. I just want it to work.

It's been a while since I've used an iPhone, does it truly multitask? Can it display multiple windows at the same time and have the apps continue to run? From what I remember the iPhone doesn't multi task, rather it freezes apps in the background, so to compare it to a galaxy is not equal IMO. Yeah I'm a galaxy user and no I don't buy into "the bright and shiny", rather I buy into this weird category called "functionality". It's nice to have a background app continue to run. It's nice to be able to interact between apps such as dragging and dropping from one to another. It's nice to minimize apps and have them provide relevant information while minimized.

But I am curious about the split screen mode, as I left iOS before it came to the iPhone. On my Galaxy I can run 2 or more windows, they all still retain functionality, that's true multitasking.

I've had the s7 edge for a week now and I'm really impressed with it. I've sold the 6s plus and am not missing it at all. I won't knock the iPhone as I still think it's a solid device but for me, the s7 edge is better suited to my needs at this present time. It feels great to have what feels in the hand and pocket like a much smaller device, yet still retains the same size screen. It's also nice to be free from iTunes as that has always been my biggest complaint. Now I can download direct to my sd card. Battery life has been really good and I don't have to worry about getting through the day like I once did with android phones and I'm yet to experience any significant lag. The introduction of the theme engine has removed the child like appearance of touch wiz, which now looks clean and fresh. 2 thumbs up from me. I'd like to say I'll be keeping this device for the next year but the next wave of phones at the end of this year may change that!

couldnt care less about antenna lines.

give me more updates, get rid of the carrier crap and control, support the devices longer

value of the device would not drop so fast, better user experience, more sales (as long as they can bully the carriers like apple)

a snapdragon 820 with 4gb ram should last 4 years, we are plateauing in mobile just like desktop, time for support to get better
I wouldn't say the tech is plateauing, but rather the tech that is currently in mobile devices has reached a point that people no longer feel the need to upgrade as quickly. Things like CPU speeds, batteries and displays aren't anywhere near plateauing.

Well guys - I went ahead and bought two S7 Edges. Let me tell you I've never been so satisfied with a phone purchase in my since my very first iPhone 3G.

BUT the days of apple being innovative and actually giving two shites about their buyers is over. After I found out there is default encryption and zero performance issues with the encryption in the S7E, it sealed the deal. Re-activation lock is there with the Samsung account and also google's default lock. Absolutely fantastic build quality, screen is just extraordinary (the graphics looks as if it's painted on the glass).

The camera is superb, the wireless rapid charging is fantastic, the waterproof is unreal, and best of all it's easy to hold and the side swipe in panel is awesome to use. Comes with EVS on T-Mobile even the iPhone 6S/+ doesn't have this and has Facetime alternative video chat built right in. Just a superb phone with expandable storage and after bouncing back and forth between this and an iPhone 7 (rumored body style), I gave up waiting because it will be EXACTLY THE SAME 10 years ago - same rows of icon, same everything. Just cannot stand the arrogance of apple these days.

Jony ives was adamant about spending all that time making icons and background transparent with blur - when the focus should've been on adding features and customizations. But no, they continue on closed doors without any input from their customer base and so now I say sayonara!

Still using iPad Pro LTE, however it's a great device. But as for phones, apple is really terrible. I was going for the iPhone 6S+ but the price tag and what it includes was a bad value, period. It was hard to hold, too big in hand and overall just a giant same old same old.

Those of you who already have purchased the S7E, I know you feel the same way I do - it's such an awesome device! go Samsung!!! BTW, I know samsung copies apple hardware/software and vice versa with apple. BUT Koreans do thing differently - they copy and they actually make things work even better - the Chinese copy and it's nothing but a piece of dung at the end. I'd buy samsung anyday over any Huawei/ZTE garbage.

Oh, gotta love the Samsung Pay - used it a a teriyaki joint mom and pop shop and it worked 100%. Apple pay is just like android pay - you can only use it at whole foods/mcdonalds (being condescending here of course ;)

No one posted this yet? Supposedly a real leak. If true is that the plus variant? Rumor has it that only one of the plus models will get the dual lens, which if true would suck for smaller iPhone lovers like myself.

There's also a lot of buzz for the smart connection (the three circular pin things at the bottom). What might that mean for Apple? Their form of wireless charging? Like current doc connectors on macbooks? Will it be magnetic? Looks proprietary?

Very interesting stuff.

Other than a form of dock connector (a lo pogo pins on the Xperia phones) that could obviously be used for charging, nothing immediately useful comes to mind. And what's the added advantage of charging through the smart connector on dock vs. just using the lightning port?

I think moving the antenna lines improves the rear aesthetic but don't like the camera bulge/bump at all. I'm excited about the prospects of the dual camera but looking like that....meh. :(

Yeah. Not thrilled overall about this new design, if legit. Feel the same way as you about the camera. The huawei p9's dual camera lens looks better to me.

Another concern for me is the rumor that only the plus (and possibly only the high end plus?) variant will offer the dual camera. If so, kind of not cool of Apple.

You're in the weeds again and failed to get the whole context of the interaction. You're so intent on trying to prove me wrong that you missed the whole thing! Reading comprehension........ try it......

You do realize...they don't have to crack the encryption to get data from the phone. They can engineer the user to input their pin or passwords through software. If the NSA or other entities want your data...they will get it.
Then they won't advertise they can do this...it defeats the whole secretive behind the scenes mantra they live by....
They can spy passwords and pins when entered on phones now.

http://blogs.reuters.com/great-deba...t-a-legal-precedent-not-break-into-an-iphone/

You are wrong. Optimistic means that they have not cracked anything. Had the company cracked the 6 and got the data then they would say that they did it. Instead they said they were optimistic. The point is about Cellebrite and cracking the iPhone 5c and whether they are able to do it on the 6. They CANNOT. They might be able to do it in the future, but as of today they can't. You want to drag the NSA into this to demure and muddy the point. But the point stand: Cellebrite cannot crack the iPhone 6 yet. They cannot get to the data yet, hence the use of the term optimistic and not successful.

But just because cellebrite can't hack the 6 doesn't mean the Chinese can't too. If anyone can, my money is on the Chinese. I just can't see them being 'okay' with impenetrable us software being sold so rampantly in their country. They have a history with jailbreaking too, they've done all the latest ones in recent time.

So if the iPhone 7 didn't have antennae lines you would be ok with that right? Or do you like the antennae lines? Or Apple is just doing fine as you said implying they can stand pat. Or just apologetics as usual?

Apologetic for what? Antenna lines? See again other than the enthusiasts on forums like here I'd guess most don't care about antenna lines to the degree that it's a deal breaking criteria.

These companies don't really care about people like us. I know people don't like hearing their opinions aren't put on a pedestal to these companies but it's about making money to them. You have a iPhone and other phones so to them mission accomplished. You probably saw some kind of value owning these phones. For all the talk on these forums it seems like you'll still buy a version of the iPhone 7. Again if you do, mission accomplished. For all the accusations of me being an apologist or a fanboy, all I see are others feelings gettin bent outta shape over their wishlists supposedly not being met in their frame of time yet they think it speaks to the state of the company as a whole to the real world.

Just finished selling my 6s+, and settling into life with my s7e. I am platform agnostic, and simply want the most cutting edge phone. In my opinion the most advanced phone, technologically, on the market today is the s7e. OS is personal preference, but the gorgeous 1440p oled, tack sharp camera, and crazy speed of the S7e make it the best phone money can buy. I

I came back to iPhone for the 6+, and 6s+ from the note 3. I really missed the Polish of ios, and Android at the time was still very janky stylistically, albeit more open to customization.hi Touchwiz in particular was jarringly ugly when you dove down into menus, and I cringed every time I looked at the dialer.

Perhaps I was just unlucky but coming back to ios was not a smooth experience where everything "just worked" and all was great. No my iPhone 6 made my life miserable. I need to stay logged into a mobile web app for work all day, every single time I logged in it would crash do to lack of RAM, and no browser or replacement phone could get it to work, ios 8 was a buggy mess, continuity never worked everything was wonky.

To be fair the 6s and ios9 fixed a lot of my issues. The 6s could handle my work requirements, and is a great phone. However my last straw was Apple music ruining my carefully curated iTunes library that I spent years building. I am still finding songs that no longer exist or were replaced with different versions.

I am now a bit angry at Apple, and have had so many issues at this point that the whole "smooth, polished, effortless" ios experience is laughable.

What has genuinely surprised me after a few days back on Android is the amount of Polish that has been added over the past few years. All the menus are neat, and tidy. The dialer is now a gorgeous design with tasteful little animated flourishes. If you do not like the look then you can theme almost everything from the stock OS. I have also cut ties to all mobile Apple services, and Google so far has really been delivering on the promise of seamless services. I have started using play music, and what a breath of fresh air. All my rare recordings stream flawlessly, and it is super easy to find other music related to my personal collection.

I also got a moto 360, and while it too is rough around the edges the hardware is so much better looking then the Apple watch I just love to wear it.

Over all I think tech people owe it to themselves to jump OSs from time to time. If you stay entrenched and biased to one for too long you will miss out on a lot of cool innovations.

My original plan was to jump over to the iPhone 7, but at this point I really think the S7e is a keeper. I may get the notw, but honestly having a small phone with a big screen, has been absolutely liberating after the last few years of lugging around ginormous 6+s
I agree completely. In the past couple years Samsung has really refined their software, and it's really polished now. I still love iOS (I have an iPad, iOS is best for tablets), but I'm using a S6 Edge (running Marshmallow). The UI is sweet, camera is amazing, and the screen is incredible. To each their own, but Samsung and the S7 is a serious threat to Apple.

These companies don't really care about people like us.

That's where you're mistaken. The millions of viewers of Youtube vlog reviews, millions of readers of the well known tech blogs and forums, ... are the majority of average users that want insight from users like us.

Companies like Samsung knows how loud and influential the techie minority can be. Which is why we see such a drastic improvement over the last several years.

Imo I disagree for the most part. I can see where higher profile media can have an effect on receptions on devices, but I still feel like it's about the money first and foremost. If a product sells well, meeting or beating expectations over the course of time it's seen by companies as a successful product.

Samsung has seemingly come a long way. But imo it's mainly due to past financial setbacks in their mobile division. If the s5 sold like gangbusters and earned and Samsung made money hand over fist from it I don't think you see the big hardware changes, regardless of how people on this forum received it.

So they listened to techies when the s6 had more premium materials, yet they didn't listen to techies when they took away the ir blaster, removable battery, sd expandable storage, water-resistance. Then they supposedly listened again when they brought back some of those things. Hmm I don't buy it. The s6 underperformed for the company, not meeting/exceeding expectations, hence the changes for the s7. And that's fine. But the company imo is thinking about how it can make the most money, like any other successful company in the world.

Basically on newer phones with complex passwords they can use lasers to get the information needed to hack into the phone. Got it. I'm ordering my laser from Amazon now.
You do realise Cellebrite knows what it can and cannot hack better than you, right? They already retrieved the iPhone directories and nearly extracted all the files without resorting to lasers

And what do you think dictates that? Public opinion does. And public opinion nowadays seems to be influenced by the minority techie crowd.

The S6 was more of a direct answer towards design critics rather than techies. Yes, sales didn't reach expectations. But it sold second to the iPhone 6S and 6S plus according to http://www.counterpointresearch.com/galaxy-s6-series-soars beating out the Android market.

Samsung had to find a way to please those that put performance & specs first, those that put design first, and those that want the balance of both. And to be able to do that without any overhyped flaws. Seems like they have succeeded with the S7 and S7 edge. All Samsung needs to do is keep the momentum going.

All companies do monster amounts of market research. I wouldn't be surprised if you're right here about Apple.

That last paragraph... Yes.

We can agree to disagree. While I see your perspective I just feel like the overriding main factor is making money. Regardless of the company. Samsung was hoping to boost sales from the s5 to s6, not to appease all the criteria but to get people to buy them. The s7 is a return of some features because the s6 wasn't a runaway hit financially. Hence the vr promo and the early bogo promos.

There's also a lot of buzz for the smart connection (the three circular pin things at the bottom). What might that mean for Apple? Their form of wireless charging? Like current doc connectors on macbooks? Will it be magnetic? Looks proprietary?

Very interesting stuff.
Looks like Apple is just asking to get banned or severly fined in the EU. Or maybe they are just arrogant enough to think the standardized USB law doesn't apply to them?

Didn't the Samsung vs Apple trials reveal that apple does a lot of market research after all?

Major companies do some or many forms of market research. I bet that's true of Samsung and Apple.

Yes it's driven by profit and money. That's the name of the game. But you'd be foolish if you think they aren't listening to what publications say.

I'm sure they do market research. I don't think I've said they don't. I just don't think the types here, the tech enthusiasts, play as large a role as some think in determining the course of a company. Especially if that company has been really successful. I think the drive for profit and money trumps everything else by a large margin.
