I don't think you know the difference between "capped" and choosing not to use features the modem was capable of. There has never been any evidence of throttling proven on any modem used in an iPhone, but clearly the Qualcomm X and 8 were capable of 4x4 MIMO that were not used because the Intel variant was not capable. Yes, the Qualcomm modem was capable of being faster than the Intel modem, but Apple chose to limit the features used on the QC to make it comparable with the Intel. Capping a device would indicate throttling was occurring, and if that was the case there would have never been any differences between the devices in the first place.
Apples to oranges! That was not my point at all. FYI, the X chassis is not capable of 4x4 MIMO (hence the Xs chassis had to be redesigned), so Apple did not need to cap the Qualcomm modem for that: the phone itself did not support the format. My point was the way Qualcomm could hold reception in low signal areas: it was better last year vs. this year due to all the iOS updates they’ve released. Last year the Intel modem was inferior in this regard. I experienced it myself. Apple recalibrated the Qualcomm modem software in the subsequent updates, so it became less sensitive to be equal to Intel.

After 104 pages of discussion, can someone please tell me if this RECEPTION-GATE on the XS Max has been resolved? I was under the impression the recent Beta 12.1 fixed the issue or did it fixed issues with wi-fi? I ordered my Gold XS Max (256 -woop ii!ii woop ii!ii) today and will be picking it up in-store tomorrow. I'll ask Apple to just credit back my account if it hasn't been fixed. I can't believe I'm spending $1249 on a phone, knowingly, has potential issues right out of sealed box. #CONSUMER REPORTS

I’ll sum it up for you: The consensus seems to be “no”, it has not been resolved although some are claiming better results with replacement phones.

In all fairness, my experience with my XS Max has been pretty solid. But today I traveled out of state and noticed this when I tried to run a speed test. My phone says two bars of LTE but the speed test itself says I am on 3G. That’s kind of frustrating.
Have you ever experienced slow speeds like this when traveling out of state with previous phones?

Do you think it's a hardware issue?
Honestly, I don’t know. There are generally two camps on this issue: It’s hardware and it’s software. Personally, I lean towards the hardware group. It just seems to me that, if software, they’d have fixed it by now. But, again, I’m far from an expert and there are some pretty savvy folks on this thread how have theories that they can back up with legit knowledge on the subject.

The fact is you won't know. I do believe there are those that have phones as I did that have issues. No one seems to know how many or to what extent these problems really are. MacRumors and sites such as this cater to those that sometimes over analyze and will find fault with the least little thing. The average consumer doesn't and so you have to just take your chance. I am one that had issues and picked up a new one on Friday and it's been fantastic so far. I don't want to downplay those that have issues, clearly they are legit. I can also tell you my phone was manufactured 10/4/18. I got it from an Apple store and they had just gotten stock in which they didn't have the day before. So is there a bad batch of phones, is it hardware, is it software? I wish we knew! All I know is thus far the one I have has exhibited none of the issues mentioned. The screen looks great, not pink, not yellow and it's even. The cellular and wifi is on par with my iPhone 8+ that I use for work. So, I would go for it and it you still have 14 days to return it.

One other thing.. this thread has 104 or so pages... it's many of the same people having a conversation including myself, so it's not like there are tons and tons of new people posting with problems. In fact as I look around the forum tonight I've seen more and more people saying they aren't having any issues. So there you have it!

You can't compare unless the phones are sharing the same band.

People keep saying this, but is it really true?

If my phone is picking the wrong (slower) band that’s as much of a problem as dropped called due to dropped cell reception.

If your point is “you can’t compare T-Mobile and Verizon” sure, I agree. If you are testing an iPhone 7/8/X vs XS/XS Max with the same network, who cares what band you are on? Shouldn’t it be choosing the best for you? If it’s not the best, it’s a problem.

Oh you've got to be kidding me...

Apple reducing the signal on the X with an update would have been bigger news than the Xs and Xs MAX having lower signal than the X. I had a Qualcomm X from day 1 until just a few days ago, and never at any point did I experience a loss of signal due to an update in an area where I previously had service, nor did anyone complain about that occurring at any time. As a matter of fact, if you would read the PC Mag article referenced in this post many times, they advise that the Intel modem was actually brought up to the level of the Qualcomm over those updates, and they proved that theory with actual test equipment in a controlled environment.

The number of RF engineers that have popped up on this site in the past few weeks is nothing short of amazing...

Apparently a Huawei engineer think it's the antenna design issue. He thinks there is nothing wrong with the Intel modem, it's just that this is the first time Apple designed a 4x4 MIMO and didn't do a good job. He is probably biased but anyways....

You think Apple will fix this with supposed antenna design with upcoming productions? I just can't see Apple redesigning this phone no matter how minuscule.

I'm flying up to Portland tomorrow to pick up the XS Max I ordered online today. Can I ask you, where do I find the manufacturing date? I'll be in touch and post once I pick it up. I've been monitoring the inventory for one specific Apple location in Portland, Oregon and I know they have always been sold out of the XS Max Gold 256, but miraculously, today, it showed up as being available. I ordered it, and immediately after, inventory shows none for this specs after I paid for it. I'm hoping I get one from a recent batch. It sucks buying Apple products where it becomes a gamble in getting a product that actually works, as it should, right out of the box. Thanks.

What, you mean the amateur RF blogger? Since when are we calling him a Huawei engineer?

You know it seems some have reached a place where they do so much testing and comparing that they can't really enjoy using the phone. I am done freaking testing and checking constantly! I've done all I am going to do. I am content with my Max and for those that aren't instead of holding on to it and hoping magic happens. Return them, however I think some of you waited and now you are sort of stuck. No way I was waiting which is why I returned my first one and repurchased two weeks later.
So your second one is working fine for you? I did the same - returned my first one and got a new one this past Sunday. This one does seem better. I’m going to make a few comparisons out and about to my husband’s 8. If they are close, I’m going to stop looking for trouble and just enjoy.

This should be taken with a grain of salt but I saw the following post over on the Apple forums:

"iPhone Xs Max poor cell phone reception fix?
Got a call today from apple today they said its a software glitch which going to be fix in the next update i asked him are you its not hardware issue he said i am 100% sure its a software glitch"
That is great news. I gave in and put iOS PB 12.1 beta 4 on my 8+ and noticed the (TMO) Carrier updated from 33.0 to 34.0.

This is mess created by apple. they should come up clean by saying they are looking into LTE signal issues .

I am forced to carry a extra phone due to this . iPhone 8 works in same place where iPhone XS fails. T-mobile said work with apple given iPhone 8 works .

If any one saying apple working on issue are not making it better ,

Apple need to come up with official statement
Have you reported this to Apple?
