If you separate your 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz and only connect to your iPhone to the 5Ghz network then your Apple Watch will never connect to your WiFi. This why people in the know blend the network and use band steering to move the devices to the best available network. Also, most people can't disable 2.4Ghz because a lot of home automation gear will only connect to the 2.4 band.

Band Steering was not a set standard and is certainly not common in most residential routers. It actually becomes quite problematic when it's used but the router does not have it implemented properly, case in point this issue some are having.

The average person who buys the cheapest wifi to mid-ranger router is not going to have proper band-steering. You need a >$300 router for this.

I've seen this stuff over 2.5 decades now. Some idiot buys a Maserati and then complains when they cannot drive 180Km/h down an unmarked dilapidated road.

I decided to try iOS 12.1

It comes with T-Mobile carrier 33.5

I imagine it must manipulate the band preferences because I notice that I have three bars in places I previously had one bar.

It’s like buying a new Maserati with 6 gears and gears 4-5-6 don’t work!

Italian quality...

If I compare to my iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 Plus, I do have a much weaker and unreliable service with my new iPhone XS Max using LTE, I am using T-Mobile, carrier settings 33.0.

My carrier settings were updated 2 times last week, same 33.0 version. I have done Reset Network Settings and I have also Restored the phone with iTunes. No visible change so far.

Definitely the XS Max is underperforming compared to my iPhone 8 Plus.

I returned my XS a few days ago to the authorized seller. Authorized seller said they needed to get a certified apple technician to have a look at it, before they could issue a exchange/refund.

Certified apple technician has come back and acknowledged that there is an issue with LTE and WIFI, and they will be issuing me a new one. Reason for exchange is noted as ‘manufacturing defect’.

Given how this issue seems to not affect everyone, I am inclined to believe that it is indeed a hardware issue affecting certain batches.

I will keep returning until I find one that works.

Keep us posted I don’t believe it’s device specific. I believe it’s use case specific.

You can get a Google OnHub for $115 and it has band steering. There are several budget routers that support it, yes it’s probably not in the $40 cheapest routers but it is in mid-range and you def don’t need to spend >$300 for band steering. All i’m saying is more people might have the feature than you think.

In a van down by the river
Just did another Wifi test. Not seeing any weak or dropped signal, or reversion back to 2.4 GHz.

So I don‘t want to read 55 pages, is there a simple way to test/measure if my XS is affected too? Or do I have to use my old iphone 7 side by side with the same sim card and test it with speedtest.net?

Can I just test this with wifi and dont changing sim cards?
Test with sim in few locations and see. We’ll gladly wait for results

Look at when he holds it (cover the antenna) the wifi just died.....:D

My Wi-Fi speed are ok , but my xsmax also instantly drops a bar of Wi-Fi signal if I place my hand behind the back of the phone on the top.... very weird. My iPhone 7 Plus did not do that. My wife’s xsmax (from a different shipment of phones than mine) also does the same thing.

Did you test to see is there is a difference on cellular between 12 and 12.1?

I did not expect to see any difference in signal strength, so I was not prepared. The only difference I have noticed is the change in some situations where I have three bars now, and I had one bar on 12.

Did data speeds improve? Mine are worst ever since I got Xs max hoping it will improve in 12.1

Data speeds on LTE did not improve just because I went to three bars in these locations. But that could be because there isn't enough bandwidth available for it on whatever band I'm using now.

I do not share your experience with worse data speeds.

Where the arrays allow for it, I get much, much better data with the XS Max.

Out here in the country where I live, we just won't ever get good data speeds on our arrays because there are too many people on them until T-Mobile upgrades.
