I installed the 2nd beta. My bars are the same, signal strength in the service menu is the same. However when running a speedtest my speeds are about double. I'll check throughout the day and see if it remains constant.

The Intel chip is better than the qualcomm in the X per pc mags test. The issue appears to be antenna design and software.
That is not correct, as they did not have a Qualcomm X running iOS12 and they clearly stated that in the article. They only compared the Qualcomm X running iOS 11, which cannot be a fair comparison at all.

I have 12.0 on my X and Xs Max. Non scientific testing, but I swapped my sim from my max and did a speed test with both wifi and LTE at my house. Both close and within the margin of error. IOW, less than 10 Mbps difference. Of course I get good LTE reception at my house.

I am going on a 4 hour road trip tomorrow. 2 hours one way during work hours and 2 hours back late night. I will be traveling with 3 other people all with different model iPhones. I have a Max. They have, iPhone X, iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus. I know my Max and the X are on iOS 12. Will check what iOS the others have tomorrow. I will be checking all their LTE speeds along the way and comparing. This is in Souther California.

make sure you put them all into field test mode first or it doesn't matter. It's also not about speeds it's about staying connected or even if data is flowing .

It's a close enough comparison. Same hardware. Only difference is software. Would ios11 vs ios12 perform differently in these tests? It does on the Intel version of the X but that doesn't necessarily mean it would on the qualcomm version. And the difference is not close enough to matter as it still shows the Xs with the intel modem is ahead of the X with a qualcomm.
Even if ios12 brought the qualcomm X up to the same level as the Xs you'd still have the Xs with an Intel modem that performs on par with a qualcomm X that people loved. IF ios12 improved the qualcomm X.

Either way that tells us the whole thing is a software problem and could be improved. That's something to be happy about!

Spent another night last night on a 2 hour call with Apple and they had me running through all sorts of tests. They had me install some profiles to gather log info which was sent to them last night for "the engineers" to look at. I asked the person if I was still the only person that was having the issue with extremely slow LTE speeds (5mbps down, 1mbps up with 3 to 4 bars) and they said definitely not.

The person assigned to my case said they'll be calling me within the next 48 hours or sooner.
Thanks jecapaga.

This is my same experience. Spent 2 hours last Saturday with Apple, installed profiles on my XS Max and iPad Air 2 for comparison. Ran speedtests on wifi and cellular. Created system diagonose files and sent those along with screenshots to Apple. They followed up with me again this past Monday to spend another hour with me. They are sharing all my logs and files with engineers; different teams are handling the LTE and wifi issues.

I am glad to be able to help, but it has been frustrating spending so much of my personal time trying to get them information. They started asking me to do the same with my wife's iPhone 6S, but I had to draw a line somewhere. Firstly my wife is really sensitive about privacy and didn't want to share information and also I quite frankly didn't want to spend another few hours going through the process all over again. I work and getting on calls with Apple at 8pm after a long day is too much.

I was told I would likely be contacted later in the week.

That’s why you pay that premium price to get this extra customer service LOL
Jokes aside, it’s pretty much ridiculous!

Thank you for investing your time. Been there and know it can be frustrating. My wife would not let me ‘test’ either.. I don’t even bother asking.

Now I’m retired and still have my 6S Plus and would have been happy to run comparison tests to help figure it all out. But they didn’t ask me. LOL

I gave them logs from my XS and Iphone 7 and 1000 + miles of real world usage and they admitted that there were major problems with my XS and even did an engineering capture on the device.

What's the premium for extra customer service?
Sorry I am new to iPhone/iOS. The iPhone XS would have been my first had I kept it.

I so want to order a new one instead of the XR.

On cellular, my Xs Max starts up with a good signal and quickly falls off when I'm in a poor reception area. It's odd how the meter is maxed at 4 bars and then quickly drops down to 1 or so. Reception isn't as bad as my previous phone, but it's certainly nowhere near as good as I expected.

Did you give them your reason for return?

I did. They just said haven't heart about any problem

Apple doesn't have the balls to admit that there is a major problem with these phones. They still think that they can censor the internet and remove post from those who post about the reception issues.
Now you're being silly. They're testing. Testing takes a long time to determine root cause. So many carriers, bands, frequencies, locations, that's an enormous amount of data to sift through.
Not everyone is having this issue which makes it harder to nail down. And you don't see it reported by as many sites because it is so intermittent and not affecting everyone. If apple wanted to censor then why would there be so much discussion and reports of the front camera softening issue or the charging issue which is fixed in beta?
It's not a grand conspiracy. Just settle down and wait.

So did you ask about what you should do with iPhone. Return now because of problems or your extended because of problems.
