I also have problems with WiFi, specifically the 5GHz band. I renamed the 5GHz to something else and range on the XS Max is pretty bad. It's now been connected only to 2.4GHz for a few days and seems to work fine.

The problem is Apple isn't saying anything about it to confirm it's software, so I'll return it and buy another one if it gets fixed.
They NEVER say anything....

The same happened to my Xs, the wifi problem. Disconecting and very bad range for 5GHz.

Back to the store yesterday, I'll wait and decide to buy a new one in case it gets solved.

Bad thing is I sold my 6s, now I have to use a ****** S7, hopefully not for long

I'll be going back to my good old launch day iPhone 6. It feels like a small toy compared to the XS Max.

The point was that he shares far more there, qualifications, obervatiins, and so on. Not that he was an expert. You and some others were going on about who he is and whatnot. I gave you some more info should you want to use it.

I won’t out him, his name, and so on. That’s easily found with years of in-depth, detailed posts elsewhere for you to peruse. He’s anti Apple, regardless. So I wouldn’t take anything he said as gospel anyway.

TLDR: just trying to give you and the “who is this guy” crowd some more info to follow up with IF you found it that concerning.
Thanks, that’s actually very useful.

I was just in the lunch room at work with 3 bars of cell (Verizon) and WiFi on, but not connected. I opened Instagram and it said No Connection. WTH? After a couple of tries of closing and reopening Instagram it dropped down to 1 bar.

This one big beta test you would think Apple would have done adequate testing of their own.

All I will say from real world use in hand for 2 weeks.

My old Samsung S8+ with 2X2 MIMO antennas has better WiIfi and LTE Reception than the XsMAX period.

S7 and newer are 4x4 MIMO. As you get newer, they can do 4x4 on more bands with CA simultaneously, but it really doesn't matter, as few towers have 4x4 MIMO, so mostly it's used for antenna diversity, which increases signal quality significantly at low signal strengths.

Wondering if diversity is the issue. Not wanting to go back to a good band.

My speedtest on my iPhone XS Max. I'm outside in a big city and as you can see in the photo I'm getting 4 LTE bars but can not even stream on YouTube. I've restarted my iPhone, turned off then on in Airplane mode but nothing helps. The first top two speedtest numbers was done here today in the city. The other numbers are at my home. BTW I have unlimited data and i they are not supposed to throttle me until I get to do many GB and I haven't.

This sucks. I need to go buy a Samsung Galaxy.

I had an iPhone X before this and had the same signal issues. I even called Verizon and they had me do the above steps. I was able to get about 60mbps down then. Not long after that, it slowed back down. I really think it's Verizon issue. I had someone at work with an iPhone 8 on Verizon do a speedtest in the same area. They got the same results.

It’s hit or miss for me. Yesterday at home it was absolutely awful. WiFi just dropped every 30 minutes or so. Today, in the exact same spot it seems to be doing ok. It’s really bizarre.

I really don’t want to go through the hassle of returning it. I love the phone and my 8+ is already packaged up waiting for sale. I’ll probably make a decision later today.

I have until next Saturday to return mine to T-Mobile. I was schedule to exchange it today, but an exchange means no refund.

I’m giving Apple till Tuesday. Otherwise back to my 6s.

I'm in the same boat. In NYC with a XS Max on AT&T. It's ridiculous. It's been this way since I got the phone on launch day. I know it makes no sense, but it seems to be getting worse for me. Last night and today nothing data related works at all. I keep getting website timeouts with messages saying to connect to the internet.

They won't have it fixed by tuesday. The beta for the charging fix is not expected to drop until the end of the month and that issue has been identified.
You may get a beta release with a network fix this month but an official release will be awhile.

5G WiFi isn't great, but otherwise I don't seem to have any issues with WiFi. Most of my issues appear to be on cellular service. But I'm having issues at the same spots where I had trouble with my previous phone so it may or may not be caused by Verizon.

In 2018 it's absolutely inexcusable to have any connection issues stemming from the iPhone since Apple has been doing this for a decade.

Do you think the iPhone XR will offer a significant better reception? Cellular reception is more important to me then a high resolution display.

Can't be sure until it comes out, but it's looking like the XR will have better reception. Antenna gain tests for the FCC were more normal, and Apple's been doing 2x2 LTE for years, so the software should be ready.

Then again, I thought buying in a "S" year would mean less problems, but not the case with my XS Max.

Antenna diversity just uses two antennas to get a better signal. It has nothing to do with band selection, which is done by the tower, based on information provided by the phone.

Because Apple forgot to test in their lunchroom.

I think Apple may really have a perspective issue. The people designing these things are in the Valley, which is highly densified due to capacity, and I'd bet that the spaceship has an AT&T LTE DAS in it to supply them with nearly perfect signal and speed all the time.

I live and work in Silicon Valley and my Verizon coverage on my Xs is lousy

That's not necessarily true. They could easily move the code that fixes the charging issue from 12.1 beta into a 12.0.1 bug-fix release and release that in the next week or so. Apple has done this many times.

Similarly, they could do the same with a network fix although I suspect that if a network fix happens at all that it will take awhile longer.
