Nope. Samsung sells more mid-range phones than all of apple combined. XR is a mid-range spec-ed phone. So go figure :)

Samsung don’t sell mid range. The ones that may sell are their budget ones

XR would be classed as more than those phones Samsung sells. XR has premium features so it’s hardly mid range...£899 for a 256Gb XR is hardly mid range.

Doesn’t change the fact more will want the XR than they will Samsung flagships. So clearly apple are doing something right

Anyone else notice this same OP posts multiple negative iPhone threads... and everyone seems to feed the troll.

Moved the goalposts there, didn't you?

That's the biggest reason I ordered the Xs. Bit ridiculous that the Xr isn't at least 1080p. I know the average consumer isn't going to care, but when I upgrade phones I expect it to be just that. UPgrade. Not downgrade. And as a 7+ user the Xr felt like a big expense for nothing.

Due to price only.
Right. That's Apple's goal. To offer a not quite top of the line device for a pretty substantial discount relative to the top of the line.

Which means that a lot of people are more price sensitive than premium tech sensitive. Which is why it has the tech it has. Which is why the not so veiled point of the OP doesn't really make any sense.

I think this thread and other threads illustrate the confusion about the Xr's screen. Some people complain about the Xr's "low resolution" screen, but some of the same people happily use an iPhone 8 screen.

This is bizarre, considering the the Xr screen should look exactly the same as the iPhone 8 screen.

Furthermore, the iPhone 8 debuted at $699. The Xr screen is much bigger and the Xr debuted at $749.

OP didn't say it was low resolution, he said it was 1080p. He didn't say it was bad. He said he expected more for the price.

I was talking about another post in this thread (and in other threads).

Is it? Most carriers throttle streaming content to 720p regardless right?
It's 828p.

Mind you, good quality 720p looks just fine on my 1080p 7 Plus anyway.

The main valid argument for higher pixel density is not video playback. It's for text quality.

Every pixel has to be driven by system. More pixels=more overhead. There is absolutely zero benefit to anything over 400 ppi for regular RGB LCD panels (based on limitations of human eyesight and expected viewing distance). OLED benefits from higher pixel density because there are extra blue pixels (the reason for “pentile” arrangment) to accommodate for blue OLED fading. Back in RGB LCD land, the only thing all those extra high ppi pixels do is drag down system performance along with battery life. More isn’t always better.

Um what happened to apple ? Seems like they are taking steps back
They are doing what their customers allow them to do.

You can see in this very forum people "defending" Apple in every move, and this is what you get in return, now I do not mean that everything need to be negative, but Apple pulled many strings that was allowed by their customers that they should not have.

I guess it is the power of their logo, and people desperatly needing approval from others, hence buying what "the crows has", well I miss when the "Crowd" was like Apple? Ehww they suck... Those were the days where APple really had an edge.

TThey want to Appeal to the mass, while back then they were against, Apple turned into the lemming ADs they were so against back then!

From "Think Different" to "Don't think and buy!"

I think the iPhone XR and iPhone 7 and 8 all share the same ppi. Difference is the LCD for iPhone XR is pushed to edge of frame and rounded. Quite an accomplishment considering LCD substrate is glass and not flexible. Will be interesting to see how it all goes together. But yeah, it is a “step back” to have a very accessibly priced phone that shares all the same top tier hardware as Apple’s $1000 models.

Apple has iOS and a lot of people want that. If Apple's phones were running Android nobody would buy them with that display resolution when a 300€ Pocophone F1 comes with a similar size 1080p bezelless LCD, with rounded corners and a notch. Hell, in the keynote Apple themselves couldn't really justify what makes it the "best LCD in a smartphone".

I can't think of any other reason they did it other than to differentiate it enough from the XS. For my needs, everything else about the XR is good enough apart from the large size and display. Give me an XS size device with XR specs but a 1080p display and I would buy one.

I think the A series is supposed to be midrange.

They are realising a new A7 which is supposed to be midrange with a triple lens camera and 1080p display.

I’m not sure what I’d classify the Xr as. It’s more like a flagship phone. I think the X and max are more like ultra flagship.

I think the display is the only thing you can fault on the Xr.

Yes it's going to sell likely crazy but I think it's incorrect that nobody cares about the screen.

Not quite. Ask yourself does the consumer even know what 828P is? Or 1080 P? Or what the differences are between LCD versus OLED? They (The ‘Average’ consumer) generally do not have _any_ idea the differentials. They simply see the new form factor, face ID and the price point. That’s exactly what Apple wants them to see, and the display is not that much of a factor when making this purchasing decision for the XR.
[doublepost=1537435382][/doublepost]
How about the mediocre single camera?

Another example. Does the consumer care about a ‘single camera’. Or do they just want a smart phone camera that takes adequate photos? I’m gathering the latter. Point is, the iPhone, just like all the other models, takes decent photos. Unless you really want the best camera possible, then obviously that would be the iPhone XS. But I’m willing to believe that the iPhone XR will still offer ‘fairly good quality’ photos for what is offering.

The Xs is fairly large downgrade in screen real estate from the Xr.

Because of this, the Max is the only iPhone that i wouldn't feel bad buying, but it costs $1100, for 64GB! It's not related to the topic but in Europe, in my country, that's $1680 with taxes, that equals to TWO average monthly salaries over-here. o_O:mad:
What is related to Apple is that not long ago you'd get the best speced iPhone for $799, starting price, without feeling bad but now we have to pay $300 more for the same feeling! (plus taxes). The XR is crippled in many ways, the XS still has below average to average battery and the screen is too narrow for the majority of people. :apple:

I’m thinking that 2019 might bring a 4 phone lineup.

XI Max with little brother XIr.
XI with little brother XIc.

XIr is the XI Max with 326 ppi screen, missing telephoto, no 3D Touch.

XIc is the XI with 326 ppi screen, missing telephoto, no 3D Touch.

Most people would watch hd content on WiFi. Resolution is not just for video. The world is moving towards 4K and Apple can’t even do 1080p. Tim Cook’s era will be known for his greed.
