Screen real estate in the sense of info displayed on screen. The Xr and Xs Max show the exact same amount of info. The Xr packs that info into a smaller screen though. What?
Idc about the screen real estate percentage, the Xr has thicker bezels.

Its not that nobody cares about the screen its that the people who care about the screen will pay a premium for a higher rez OLED.....which suprise surprise, they are also selling.
I also felt like this was a slap on our faces, they even had the nerve to invent another term for the xr's screen to make it sound like it's super high tech! Liquid Retina! Ha! The only explanation I can come up with, it's that they didn't want to cannibalize the sales of the xs, most people don't know about resolution and the ones who do and care about it, will be pushed to get "the upgrade" aka the Iphone xs or the max.
It's just too much greed, 720p+ screen, no fast charger, refusing to go with usb c, don't forget that this device costs 850 euros in Europe. Damn I hate supporting apple, it feels like an abusive relationship, and I can't leave.

Maybe so, but the XR is only 326 PPI...and unacceptable, IMO.Every pixel has to be driven by system. More pixels=more overhead. There is absolutely zero benefit to anything over 400 ppi for regular RGB LCD panels (based on limitations of human eyesight and expected viewing distance). OLED benefits from higher pixel density because there are extra blue pixels (the reason for “pentile” arrangment) to accommodate for blue OLED fading. Back in RGB LCD land, the only thing all those extra high ppi pixels do is drag down system performance along with battery life. More isn’t always better.
I’m not sure the the “PPI drop” from OLED to LCD is that drastic.I predict next year Apple will introduce a 326 ppi 750x1624 5.5" iPhone
Thus, 2019 would have:
326 ppi LCD
5.5" 750x1624
6.1" 828x1792
458 ppi OLED (which is more like 375 ppi in LCD terms)
5.8" 1125x2436
6.5" 1242x2688
However, my preference for the LCD would be:
401 ppi LCD
5.5" 924x2000
6.1" 1024x2216
I think they'd stick with the 326 ppi though, since from a math point of view it's simpler, and it also costs less. Plus, most people are fine with 326 ppi. My wife is, that's for sure.
It is. I've done the calculations already. The reason is that pixels in Samsung diamond pentile displays only have 2 sub pixels. LCD pixels have 3 sub pixels.I’m not sure the the “PPI drop” from OLED to LCD is that drastic.
I’m aware of that distinction, but how do you calculate an effective overall PPI from such an arrangement? It is. I've done the calculations already. The reason is that pixels in Samsung diamond pentile displays only have 2 sub pixels. LCD pixels have 3 sub pixels.
There's also wifi. Most common cellular plans mostly have 480p streaming. Only the top tier cellular plans have 720p+ streaming! Not many people can afford a $100 a month cellular unlimited plan! Most carriers charge an additional extra for the full 1080p streaming. A $10-$20 more surcharge on top of the 720p plan. Xr is the one to get if you use cellular to watch streaming content and you are not in a top of the line unlimited cellular plan with add on extra 1080p tied to it! I just do not see how one can pay over $120 just to get 1080p streaming on their smartphones. Just ridiculous expense for that privilege!

XR will be the best selling SKU by a large margin. The PPI is the same as all previous retina iPhones, in other words, good enough to not see the pixels in normal use. IMO, there's no need to continue increasing PPI (it was stupid when Android manufacturers kept bumping pixel count when the SoC couldn't keep up, still stupid if most people can't see the difference). Anyway, 1080 is an arbitrary number that was created primarily to describe HD for TVs. I'm glad Apple doesn't feel the need to hit that threshold for the sake of hitting it.
I'm excited for a microLED future though, we can get the best parts of OLED (contrast, infinite blacks) and none of its drawbacks (burn-in, organic degradation, low brightness). gonna be a while before that happens, but PPI is probably the least of my concerns in a phone screen now.
How is it greed? Their goal is to make money, yes? If they are overpriced they won’t sell. I’m thinking that will not be the case.

Content in 720p which is still consider HD but not full HD is more then adequate for such a small screen. All Apple iPad even the pro are 720p with 264ppi I think? I know my iPad Mini is 720p with the same 326ppi
Except that the iphone XR , does not have a 400 ppi, that's all we're asking for, we're not asking for a qHD LCD screen .
It's amazing how many people buy everything apple says, they said everything above 300 ppi cannot be dicerned by the human eye, I disagree, I CAN tell the difference, without "pixel peeping" , at a normal viewing distance, the text is clearer and with less jaggies, apps displaying big fonts display this quite , for example the clock app.
For me greed is after having us pay 850 eur or 1150 eur ( for the iphone xs ) they force us to shell out 85 eur more to get a 2018 worthy charger, if that is not greed...
I'm sorry but the world is bigger than USA, there are a ton of other countries, where actually can watch 1080p/ qhd videos without you having to pay more than a 100 dollars a month, we also have wifi you know? So you justify what american carries do by calling streaming full hd videos a privilege? Just owning an iphone it's a privilige itself! The carriers should cater to us! ...

LCD does not have or need duplicate color sub pixels like OLED.It is. I've done the calculations already. The reason is that pixels in Samsung diamond pentile displays only have 2 sub pixels. LCD pixels have 3 sub pixels.
I'm not sure what you're getting at, but each of your LCD pictures is showing 3 subpixels.LCD does not have or need sub pixels.

Nevermind, I thought you were talking about the duplicate blue subpixels found in OLED. Brain fart. Will make correction.I'm not sure what you're getting at, but each of your LCD pictures is showing 3 subpixels.

Except the PPI of the iPhone XR is the same PPI as the iPhone 8 and 7 and 6. It is a reasonable compromise. Why is the PPI suddenly some major deal breaker when not a peep was made before? A 500 PPI LCD is completely pointless. The LCD does not have or need the extra colored sub pixels found in OLED and therefore it does not need the extra PPI.Except that the iphone XR , does not have a 400 ppi, that's all we're asking for, we're not asking for a qHD LCD screen
Yet some people on here seem to be under the impression that something posted in 1080p won't be able to play on the iPhone XR even though it has the same PPI as the iPhone 8.It's a non-story. 720p doesn't really mean anything to the general public.
