iTunes 8.1 Now Available for Download

So there a people out there that actually use Front Row? No, really, I thought that Apple would get rid of it soon. I find it annoying.... just like the gestures on the mouse pad.

I use "Front Row" for several hours each day. I love the simplicity and have an AppleScript that converts any video file placed into my movies folder to h.264 and once converted it deletes the original so there is no wasted, duplicate, space.

I am disabled and spend 20+ hours a day in bed and would lose my mind without "Front Row"!

8.1 launches a lot faster on my 2.16 GHz MacBook, 2 GB RAM.
And for about the first dozen launches, Minimize apple:M) wasn't working. Now it is.
Neat.

By the time word get back to Headquarters it's to late to hit for tuesday release.

So Wednesday it is.

Either that or Tim Cook has Monday off for Canteen at his kids school to make up for all the weekends he's working at the moment and moved the town hall to Tuesday.

Maybe Steve should get an iPhone.

Is it just me or they changed how the scrolling works with cover flow?
I can't use two-finger side scroll on cover flow anymore, just up-and-down scrolling since the update to 8.1.

While decent quality, CDs are far from lossless.

While this isn't a thread for this conversation, production CD's are in fact the lossless option for 99% of media.

Wow, iTunes 8.1 is insanely fast.

Just 2 bounces on the dock before it instantly opens (note, this is on an original Macbook Core Duo). Scrolling through a library is instant.

Music to my ears. Downloading now.

Eh, its a new flashy number to throw at the inexperienced.
It makes them think something else is new, and that they are getting better music, when they could have done it themselves all along...

Why would you use either? If you are importing CD's, do yourself a favor and use Apple Lossless. Its a nice step inbetween wav/aiff size and compressed. It will also take less time. Quality is outstanding.

Don't cripple yourself by turning lossless cds into aac.

I tried using Apple lossless tracks on my iPod and couldn't get it to work. The iPod skipped as though there was too much data for its teeny weeny processor to handle.

I was prepared to convert all my tracks to lossless, but decided not to. The sound quality is imperceptible to me anyway.

It's notable for people that always just go with the default, and never go into the preferences.

It's not, but the fact that the default setting changed is noteworthy. I'm not saying it's a big deal, as we've been able to import at a much higher quality since... forever, but it's at least worthy of a little bullet note.

Agreed that it's worth a bullet stating much as you did above. But Apple decided to make it slightly misleading by implying that 256 is of a higher quality than it actually is.

The genius bar still says that it only works with music. This was the feature that I was most looking forward too!!!

Some of us don't have the option to "View - Show Genius Sidebar". Not sure why. I can click on my "Purchased" list which has the sidebar, but it says "Genius sidebar only works with music".

Hopefully we'll find a solution shortly.

What is this all about? The iTunes DJ thing opened with some thing about making requests with an iPhone? What?! So the idea is that while you're at a party with your iTunes blaring people with iPhones can 'call in requests'?

What kind of AppleScript is that? I'd love to run that, so practical and brilliant.

So far iTunes preforms the same as the previous version on my end. Still has that slight lag when I scroll through my library using the list view with album covers.
