Because Apple will not allow people to 'purchase/rent' videos from their apps. So if VUDU/AMAZON made an app it would be to view only.

Same as it is on the iOS apps (at least for VUDU).

I don't think that's an issue so much as these companies just don't see the value in adding an app to the ATV. The ATV is hardly a success. Yes, we all thought (or hoped) that with the new ATV and the app store these companies would just rewrite their apps to be compatible. Seems there is some business reason they aren't. Probably to stick it to Apple ;-)

Considering their iPhone and iPad apps are view only, I don't think that is the actual hold up for the Apple TV app.

Does anyone ever trade codes on here? Or is there a place for that?
I have the Expendables 3 and the Hunger Games: Catching Fire both for UV

I'll trade for some iTunes codes if anyone wants to make a deal.

Wrong. There are other stores to buy/rent movies on Apple devices besides iTunes.

Such as? Sure you can go out to the web to do things like rent from Amazon or Buy from Vudu - but the iOS apps are just viewers.

Some bigger partners like Hulu and Netflix allow it - but again, they are giving "some" cut to Apple. For Hulu they even increased the cost if you subscribe on an iOS device to help cover the costs.

Apple is happy on it's isolated island, under their rule, sometimes to the detriment of their customers.

yeah which ones allow that i am curious.

and from NetNothing's post, Hulu and Netflix are different as they are a subscription-base app. as far as i know you don't rent or buy movies from there. and if you make a subscription "purchase" via the app, then Netflix/Hulu has to pay Apple.

Ultraflix has their own store like iTunes to buy individual movies. There are a couple others, but I not home to list them all. I can update this for you later.

Interesting. Based on the description though they say you can buy/rent with in-app purchase. That basically means they are giving Apple 30% of those purchases.....something neither Vudu or Amazon want to do.....and I can't blame them.

Personally I think gone are the days of needing to lock this down for Apple. We aren't in the infancy of getting people to buy smartphones. Everyone has them. There are no apps that are just for a single platform anymore. Apple needs to relax this rule so that us customers aren't negatively impacted.

Agreed but it is a sticky issue. If I'm a developer and Apple gives me a platform (800 million iOS users) to sell my goods, if I make 10 million dollars, shouldn't Apple get a cut of that? It's like the equivalent of opening a pizza business and selling pizzas but I don't want to pay the rent and every dime should go to myself.

Or I guess you can argue it the other way. People buy iOS devices because of the wonderful apps so Apple should be thanking the developers and give them a break.

I feel not for content that isn't handled or served from/by Apple. If I have an app that allows someone to order a movie, and that movie is streamed from my servers - I don't think Apple deserves anything. I view it like the Mac.....an environment that Apple can't fully control. Just because they chose to lock down the iOS side of things doesn't make it right from that standpoint.

I'm fine with Apple charging to distribute the app. I'm even fine if the app is a paid app and Apple gets a cut of the purchase price. But charging a cut for content I think stinks (unless it uses iTunes billing).

Don't get me wrong - I love Apple stuff. I love the Mac and my iDevices. However, as time goes on I get a little tired of the "it's Apple's way or the highway". I'd like things to be more open. Let Amazon/Vudu/etc onto the app store for iOS and ATV and let them sell stuff without taking a cut. Compete at the product level. Don't cripple the competition. I think Apple is scared that if they allow it - people will realize the grass is greener on the other side of the wall.

If I owned a store which was one of the most popular in the world. I would not let vendors sell their product in it for free. The reason consumers are seeing your content is because they come to my store more than others. Pay me mofo!

Apple devices are one of the most recognized brand in the world. If I was Apple I would not give them free reign to sell content without compensation. Because Apple's devices gives them exposure. BTW it's not other like companies don't take a cut like Apple does.... Roku, for example, does also. Netflix used their popularity to negotiate a better cut.... Amazon and everyone else can too. They just don't want to.

I get it. I just don't have to like it. ;-) I'm fine with some compensation - I think 30% is crazy for media.

The Finest Hours is giving double DMR points for a limited time. I redeemed on Amazon as I normally like to do to get double points (150 from Amazon and 150 from the BR) and the Disney promo doubled both for a total of 600 points.

After reading some of the most recent posts in this thread, it appears many folks still have valid questions regarding digital code sources, formats, and prices. The following URL is likely a re-post for these forums. Nevertheless, ultravioletcinema.com continues to be (IMHO) the most comprehensive and functional index (or HUB) of digital movie code vendors of all types: UV, iTunes, DMA, etc. *

Code inventory and pricing -- across dozens of indexed vendors -- is updated in near real-time. Thus, finding the lowest price for a digital code (across multiple vendor websites) is trivial. For those who may be new to digital codes -- or to this index site -- ENJOY!

* Other than a customer relationship, I have no affiliation whatsover with ultravioletcinema.com or any code vendor.

Lots of Disney classics on sale today. About $5 off each, 25-30%.

Considering picking some up. Not a huge sale, but I rarely see Disney on sale.

Has anyone redeemed The Martian Extended Edition for iTunes?

I haven't, but I'm just wondering how this works -- The blu-ray for the extended edition came out this week. The package says it has an iTunes option for the digital copy. BUT, the iTunes store doesn't seem to have it listed. And I previewed the iTunes Extras menu for The Martian, and it doesn't seem to indicate that the "extended version" or anything new has been added to it.

The press release for this extended edition a month or two ago did say that it would be released on iTunes/digitally on the same date as the blu-ray. I haven't seen any news stating otherwise.

So, if I wanted to get a code for The Martian Extended Edition, I wonder what exactly I'll get from it(?).

I have heard someone else say the same thing about The Martian Extended...saying it is in VUDU but not showing in iTunes. He's looking for the iTunes version available as a code to redeem but also worried.

Would be nice to just add it to the iTunes Extras but can't see Fox doing that....X-Men Rogue Cut for example.

I thought I heard that even though it doesn't show in iTunes, if you redeem in iTunes it works like The Rogue Cut where you get extras and the normal movie in addition to the Extended.

I redeemed the iTunes version of the Extended Edition and was able to get the EE movie. Keep in mind that not everything redeemable will always have a version of it in the iTunes Store. For example, the only way to get Sopranos: The Complete Series is through the HBO box set digital code. Only the individual seasons are available for purchase.

FWIW, Martian EE includes the theatrical version in iTunes Extras.

Also off topic but ID4 just added a boatload of iTunes Extras. It didn't have ANY when I first redeemed it.

One of the few advantages of iTunes - the Extras.
