so I am purchasing another HDMI to HDMI cable which supports 2k 165hz.
This refresh rate limit has nothing to do with the cable.
2K144 can be done with 8bpc RGB for HDMI 2.0.
2K165 requires 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 chroma sub-sampling for HDMI 2.0 but the manual says HDMI supports only up to 144Hz.

Hello everyone,

I have owned the LG Ultrafine 4k for a few days, since the COVID-19 pandemic made work from home mandatory for most Canadians. I love the display, but was struggling to connect it to my work laptop (which doesn’t have USB-C).
After hours of research, 7 different adapters, I finally found the one.

The Wacom Link Plus for Cintiq Pro 13/16 (ACK42819) takes the Mini Display Port signal from your Windows computer and convert it to a USB-C DP-Alt mode signal that your LG UltraFine will recognize.
This adapter even has a supplemental USB Micro-B to USB-A cable that you can connect to your Windows computer so that the speaker work.
The brightness controls also do show up in the Device Manager, so there might be a way of making it work, but unfortunately I cannot tinker with that since I do not have the admin privileges of my work laptop.
The display controls such as brightness can be controlled by this Windows app. It doesn't require that the Micro-B USB cable be plugged to the Wacom, as it uses the DCC protocol over DisplayPort.
The LG Display remembers the brightness from your Mac so you can control it from there by disconnecting the Windows laptop and connecting it to your Mac if like me you cannot install the app on your work computer.

Below is a picture of how you need to plug the Wacom!
View attachment 901388
Note that the HDMI port will not work. Also the UltraFine 4K will work at full resolution, but the UltraFine 5K (2019 and later) will max out at 4K.

Cheers!
Hi there! Just saw this and could be a lifesaver now that I work from home. I have the LG Ultrafine 4k 24" monitor bought last year and works great with my home Macbook Pro.
But now I have to connect a Dell Lattitude 7490 laptop to the monitor for my work PC. Will this work for a Dell Lattitude 7490? It has a DisplayPort over USB Type-C port... I tried plugging the LG monitor thunderbolt cable straight into that port and I get audio on the monitor from the PC but no video on the the monitor.
So...guessing I need this Wacom Link Plus thing to get the video as well? I feel like I'm so close to almost being plug and play but it's not :(
Thanks for any advice!
Pam

You just need to use the „normal“ USB-C cable that came with the monitor.
Do not use the Thunderbolt cable. It won’t work.
You do not need a Wacom Link Plus.

Hi - Yes, I just tried the regular USB-C cable that came with the monitor and plugged into the Dell and still the same exact issue - I hear audio but no video on the monitor. And when going into Advanced display settings in the Dell is 'sees' LG Ultrafine but when I select it, it says "inactive". :(
So that cable doesn't work either.. don't know if it's a Dell issue or that the LG just doesn't work with Dell Latitude 7490.
Thanks for helping! Not sure what to do next..

Does a normal display work from the Dell's USB-C port? Use a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

Yes it does.. I have hooked Dell up to my tv and it worked. I'm wondering if there is an adapter/cable that is Thunderbolt to displayport in the direction from monitor to computer. I only have thunderbolt to thunderbolt and Usb c to Usb c and both of those cables don't work with PC (and only the Thunderbolt cable works with my Mac)

Finally got with my company IT and we figured it out. It was some control they had to go in on the Dell PC and unlock in order to see the monitor. Thanks all!

If we could know what that was, then we would have learned/gained something from this experience.

Yes for sure! In advanced display settings in Dell 7490 laptop there is a button that said "remove display from desktop" that was turned on. I couldn't turn that button off since it's company owned laptop and had to get an admin to do that for me. Once he did that, then the laptop could actively see the LG monitor and it worked. I used the USBC to USBC cable included with the monitor for the Dell (as opposed to the thunderbolt cable needed for the Mac).
So it was all just going into the nitty gritty of the Dell laptop and having IT admin unlock some display choices.
Hope this made sense/helps! So happy it works - was getting so frustrated and about to buy a new monitor.
Thanks!
Pam

Interesting. But then how did you get the Dell to work with your TV before that? Or were you using a different port instead of the USB-C for the TV?

hmmm.. yeah that is interesting. I was using a different adapter with hdmi/display port with the tv that I tried with the LG monitor -guess that was the issue. That adapter worked on the TV but not the monitor. I'm now using the included USBc to USBc cable with monitor and Dell. Who knows.. But yeah.. that is crazy weird now that you mention that!
Oh well - my brain is fried with overthinking this whole thing for weeks. Just glad it works now. lol!

To whoever still has issues with setting up the monitor, here is maybe something that may help you, I am using the new LG Ultrafine 4k which I bought in Jun 2021, I also have an LG Ultragear gaming monitor:

The LG Ultragear has two HDMI and one display port, not a lot but enough for me.
The desktop I am using is an Alienware R12 with RTX 3080 which has three display ports and one hdmi.

I need to use both of the monitors for working and gaming, I tried a lot of the methods in the previous 15 pages, I used a lot of cables and adapters and none of them work (maybe I missed something lol). Eventually, I was able to make it work using the cable that was mentioned on page 6:

I didn't use the Wacom adapter which is like 100 CAD. However, it does work. I returned it eventually since that amazonbasic cable is all you need. (big thx to DeanL, if it is not for him I won't be posting this here)

The only change I did is that previously, I was using a dp to dp connecting from my LG Ultragear to my desktop, I changed that with HDMI to HDMI, and left three Displayport left on my desktop, now using one of the display ports and cable to connect to the LG ultrafine 4k.

One thing I should mention is that because I am using an HDMI to HDMI cable that came from a Nintendo switch, I am only running 2k 144hz, which is slightly lower since the LG Ultragear 27gp83b-b is a 2k 165hz, so I am purchasing another HDMI to HDMI cable which supports 2k 165hz.

Thx to whoever helped me with the setting up, good luck!
also, be aware that it seems like HDMI to HDMI may not support g-sync on your monitor, only dp cable can do that.

I couldn't get anything to work with the newer 4k ulstrafine model other than the Moshi cable.

I've been through so much trying to connect this beautiful 4k second version to Windows. I got the Wacom link plus and while it worked, it often disconnected, had unreliable usb connectivity and I think once shorted out the house. I even bought a capture card for the Mac to run windows through it (too laggy). All up I might have spent around $600 aud trying to get windows working on it.

I was so surprised when I plugged in the Moshi USB-C to DisplayPower and it 'just worked'. I was even more surprised when I installed the OSD utility from LG's website and I had access to brightness.

This is the one: https://www.amazon.com.au/Moshi-USB-C-DisplayPort-Cable-1-5m/dp/B077S9DZGK

It's not absolutely ideal as I will have to fiddle with plugging some cords in and out on the back of the monitor when I want to switch (hey, I'm this invested I could also investigate some kind of cable switching).

There is no usb hub utility at all, but I was ready for this.

Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina (Intel Iris Pro 5200)

FWIW, I've just discovered that the highest 16:9 resolution this GPU is able to output on the 21.5" LG UltraFine 4K, in Mavericks or High Sierra, is 3968×2232. Higher 16:9 resolutions are rejected by SwitchResX.

Hi Guys, I got this working thanks to you!

nvidia GTX 1070 > WLGQ 8K @ 60Hz (Mini DP to DP1.4) (Thunderbolt Compatible) 4K @ 144Hz High Refresh Rate (bi-directional) Cable (https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B096RWX6B9#) > Wacom Link Plus > USB-C cable that came with monitor > LG UltraFine 27 5K 27MD5KL-B

It's working with windows 10 on 4k but that's good enough for me. I have tried all sorts of cables and adapters (including asus thunderbold ex4 card which wasn't compatible with my motherboard). Thank god I found this thread.

Does your Dell support 3 external displays? The LG 5K counts as two and requires Thunderbolt 3/4 for full 5K unless you try a lower refresh rate (below 39 Hz).
If you don't have a USB-C or DisplayPort output, then you can try a HDMI to USB-C adapter like the Club-3d CAC-1332.

Ah didn't realise the 2 screens for 5k point thank you. It does have a USB-C port and HDMI output, allows 3 screens as long as I switch laptop screen off. Still cannot figure out how to add the 4k Monitor though as HDMI to USB-C connection doesn't appear to be recognised.

Which adapter are you using? It must explicitly support going from HDMI to USB-C. The adapters aren’t bidirectional.

Which Dell laptop?

The HDMI to USB-C adapter has a USB-A connection that is used for USB to the display and also for extra power to do the HDMI 2.0 to USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode conversion (DisplayPort 1.2).

Hi. I also connected it with a Moshi-USB-C-DisplayPort cable and it works for me. But I have no sound, I cannot adjust the brightness, and the usb-c ports on the back panel do not work. Video card nvidia gtx 950. Tell me how to adjust the sound and brightness, where to download the utilities? I did not find it on the LG website.

Audio requires a USB connection. Use a Belkin Charge and Sync cable. With the USB connection, brightness control should be able to work with the Boot Camp drivers. https://github.com/timsutton/brigadier
The Boot Camp control panel should have the LG brightness setting.

I'm looking at either the Wacom Link Plus or the Belkin cable. Are there any pro's or cons for using one over the other to split USB-C into DP and USB lane?
I'm using a Wacom Link Plus with my original 21.5" 4K and it's been working flawlessly. I don’t know if it works equally well with the newer 23.7” though.
