That's interesting. There're some differences with your connection and mine (2016 MBP). Yours is showing 24-bit color while mine shows 30. Though yours has rotation enabled while mine doesn't reference rotation at all.

Are you on a Thunderbolt 3 MacBook Pro?

doubt it will run properly? how so? its been running properly for quite a while now

Bandwidth is limited, no way it can run full capability of it. It's the limitation of hardware.

One of it is definitely reduced. Resolution, refresh rate, or color. One of it is definitely limited.

comparing it to one plugged into a 2016 rMBP, no difference or lag at all. while im not doubting bandwidth limit, I dont see a need for day to day use using 5K resolution...only if you're editing or viewing videos.

We got an new 1 Gbps fiber internet this week, after which we found out that the black Belkin USB-C to Ethernet Gigabit adapter attached to the hub on the backside of LG UltraFine 5K gave only 200 Mbps download and 500 Mbps upload throughput (latency was good though, 3-4 ms). Changing ports didn't help, couldn't test the adapter straigth to MacBook Pro 13" because 2015 model and no USB-C ports. With other Thunderbird to Ethernet Gigabit adapter the throughput was good 940 Mbps / 940 Mbps.

We updated the firmware of the UltraFine 5K to the newest, no difference in the throughput, update took around 15 minutes, quite long.

Then we updated the driver for macOS, black Belkin F2CU040 has Realtek chip inside, so we went with this:
MAC OS 10.6 to 10.13, version 1.0.17 2017/12/19 184k
http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads...=56&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

After the driver update (and restart of the macOS), the throughput is 940 Mbps / 940 Mbps.

The UltraFine 5K is an excellent display, this was the first problem in the last year of using it, no other problems or bugs that we have found out.
Very nice tip on the Belkin! Thank you.

It actually has nothing to do with the monitor, instead more to do with the crappy driver provided in macOS High Sierra. I tried plugging it straight into my 2016 MBP and speeds were still awful before updating the driver. The Realtek driver now makes the adapter perform as it should.
I have the white Belkin adapter FWIW.

A good app to test speeds with is iStat found in the Mac App Store. Activity Monitor also works.

Quick question, got the LG 5k Ultrafine as second screen for the iMac 5k. The LG is clearly more yellowish than the iMac. The profile LG Ultrafine and iMac are both the same. Any adjustments I can make to have a similar view on both of them?

Pretty sure my Macbook Retina from 2014 or so is also more like the iMac than the LG 5k.

They should be calibrated pretty similarly, so - without actually seeing how 'yellowish' it appears - that sounds like a defect one of the displays, likely the Ultrafine.

Regarding the monitor, does any find it to be considerably wobbly? I have noticed the 9to5 review mentioning this problem with the monitor in their review.

So here is what it looks like.

I had an LG 5k at home about 5 months ago and it looked fairly similar. Can anyone confirm that their LG 5k has pretty much the same brightness as their Macbooks or iMacs? I mean I would be very surprised if Apple manages to ship defect Ultrafine in 2018.

They should be identical, as it's the same panel calibrated in the same manner. Panel manufacturer, as always, is not perfect, and it's totally plausible that yours just has more yellow than standard. Are you within the returns window? Return it, get another, I'd wager the replacement will be different.

Yea it just arrived couple days ago. I wonder how Apple proceeds with complaints after a couple of months? I was actually thinking about getting another one through eBay.

Wobbly: I have two UltraFine 5K monitors, one manufactured a few months earlier than the other. One stand is super wobbly and the other is tight and secure.

Tint: Calibrate both of your displays with a colorimeter. That is the only way to achieve perfect color between both monitors.

When it's heavily tinted with yellow or pink display, no way you can calibrated properly. The only time calibration works is when the color temp is off by default. The yellow and pink tint is something else, not the actual panel display color.

--------

My first 5K have issue with ghosting and awfully bad uneven tint, as many of the display item in the Apple store. The second one I got doesn't have any of those issue. LG IPS panels some awful lottery to win, same as Macbook Pro 15" touch Bar, which I have yet find a single display that doesn't have some insane uneven tint.

I can confirm the handful I've used have had yellowish tints to them, nowhere near the iMac quality. you can really tell on the menu bar and window menu bars its more of a nice blueish hue where the LG is yellow and not as macOS-ish.

calibration did nothing for them either. sort of the luck of the panel.

I find it to be really stable.. I have to really shake my desk to make it wobble. I doesn't move with normal typing..

Ultrafine 4k owner here. Does anyone have a version of either 4k or 5k with the EU power cable? I suspect it might be the same as the 4k on the 5k. If you do have it, could you please confirm it's the same based on the information below and post the manufacturer and the model number so I could find it and buy it somewhere. I could only find standard shaped power cables from ebay and Amazon. A swap within Europe could also be an option. That's of course if the power cables of these monitors are the same.

Mine is the UK version, it looks like this and is about 1.8m long. The other end is the standard UK plug, manufacturer is Longwell.

I got a refurb recently which had the fixes applied. However, the image retention was laughably bad. Worst I have ever seen by a long way. Having a screen static for 20 seconds resulted in it and it wasn't faint, it was so clear.

Was there any amends along the way that fixed this or is this a lottery with these screens? The seller is offering me one with a serial beginning 8xx. From what I have read it sounds like a lottery and fairly common with this screen...

I am in the same situation as you regarding the screen retention. From the research I did awhile back it seems like this is a characteristic of the type of LED screens they used, so it is somehow acceptable. Maybe a class action is in order ?!

Frankly it’s pretty shocking and surprised at some of the comments people make that it’s acceptable. I guess it’s why LG only offered a year warranty. You couldn’t use it for anything to do with image editing. It was so bad.

I have an iMac Pro and wanted to match with a 5k screen. May end up finding a Dell 5k instead as they seem to be more reliable or just give up and get a 4K screen.

I have had a 5K display for about 16 months now. In the last 2 weeks, it has started cutting out for 1-3 seconds (black screen on 5K, MBP flashes as if the monitor is unplugged, then it all comes back) every hour or so. I have been using the Belkin 3.1 C-C cable for a week now to see if it would make a difference, and it has not. Running 3.04 software.

LG is no help. I'm about to throw this thing in the garbage.

It's the same panel iMac uses. iMac also exhibit the same exact issue with image retention (lottery) also extreme level uneven tint.

Hence why we see so many problem with display issue on the latest MacBook Pro as well.

If only Apple could stop using LG panels....... they are dirt cheap but all trash....

Im really more so disgusted with Apple than LG at this point. Apple is offering this in lieu of their prior display offerings and then while yes its 3rd party product (expensive) pawn you off on crappy LG support. Additionally they changed the price briefly to get people in and raised it back to really way more than what its offers.

I had a Thunderbolt Display (under warranty) have display issue (no reseller or Apple store wanted to service it, aka no parts, EOL, etc) and Apple ended up swapping it with a LG 5K. Which seemed impressive for an upgrade, but their replacement unit is defective with very bad image retention, and I asked if I could exchange and their AppleCare Cus. Relations rep basically hung up and said nope, call LG! LG support has been a waste of time.

I’m going to give up finding one that is right. I’ve bought many monitors throughout the years and this is the worst in terms of issues and the laughable warranty.

Gonna get a P2715Q for now.

Updated 10/25/2018 to add Nektech option

Hi folks, my foot kicked out the LG UltraFine 5K cable and it's no longer working. I see from this thread that one person is using a Belkin 3.1 C-C cable. Does that support 5K resolution? Apple's site says "connect to a DisplayPort-enabled USB-C display for video resolutions of up to 4K."

What other options do I have? No one seems to stock replacement LG cables. :(

OK, for others fruitlessly searching this thread for an answer, here are your cable replacement options that support 5K resolution, which are specifically referred to as Thunderbolt 3 cables and have a "lightning" icon on their plugs:

Amazon - Cable Matters 40Gbps 100W Active Thunderbolt 3 Cable (2.0 m) $58.00

Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB‑C) Cable (0.8 m) $39.00

Nekteck Active Thunderbolt 3 Cable (2.0 m) $54.99

It appears that the Cable Matters cable has more negative reviews but one Nekteck reviewer said it screwed up her USB C port’s ability to charge, so if you want longer than 0.8 m, you're on your own.

I bought the Apple one because I don't ever want to kick it again. :D

After a long period of indecisiveness regarding purchasing this monitor, I finally decided to go for it. Consumer protections are strong down here in Australia, and LG are already providing a 3yr warranty on the Ultrafine 5K verses the 1yr elsewhere, so I'm confident I'd be covered if any of the horror stories I've read came my way.

However...
