Hey, what's the screen like on the Air? The pics I've seen over at places like appleinsider showed a bright, crisp screen compared to the Macbook Pro. I need a bright screen, sort of like the Dell's TrueLife screen I"m using now. I gots bad vision, you know? :D

The screen is very nice. Not as amazing as the 163 DPI LCD on the iPod Touch, but still very bright, vibrant, and pretty sharp. I'm not a huge fan of Apple's text-sharpening method (I forget what it's called), but if you're into it, then the screen seems like a winner.

It's 4th Feb., I'm standing in an Apple store, and there are none for sale. Unless they sold out between 9:00 AM door open and 9:10 AM when I walked in -- and didn't tell me that they even sold any -- then they don't have them, or we haven't hit the "hard date" yet.

I have some Best Buy gift cards from my b-day last week, so I'm planning to swing by, anyway. None of the local stores are available for in-store pickup, but who knows if they have any units on the shelf.

From the looks of things around, 10 minutes, yeah, you were way too late. ;)

Note part above about *receive* today for sale today. They did not get any on Saturday. I know an Apple Store guy. He would have refused to tell me when they were allowed to sell them, which is the important part -- so, no, he has not provided the 4th Feb. date -- and he wouldn't have told me how many of which specs, but he would have told me if they got a shipment received and they were stacked in the back room. I talked to him Sunday. They did not get a shipment Saturday, and they do not get shipments Sundays. Today. This morning. If they use FedEx freight, that could be up to 3PM local time. It's usually between 10AM and 1PM, though.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so. In fact, I'm so sure it's a hard retail date, if no place, no Best Buy, no Apple Store, gets them today, I will declare it was still a hard date but they blew it.

Cool, thanks! Reason I'm asking is that my stepson just bought a black macbook, but imho the screen sucks because it just doesn't get bright at all. My G3 Powerbook's screen was a blazing sun compared to the macbook's screen.

Dammit, still nothing here at Millenia. Now the guess is "sometime in the next couple of days; keep calling." Apple really needs to get their ass in gear and announce a definitive date, or at least explain that there are delays. Giving potential customers the silent treatment but continuing to play ads for the thing non-stop is pretty bad business.

And every time I come in and play around on one of these things, I want one even more. Very frustrating.

Any FL Mall updates? I'm bored enough that I might just head out there and take a look myself.

If they don't get plenty for sale at Apple Stores today, I'm going to think they have line problems, and if I do indeed make the final decision to buy one, it's going make me hold off a couple months at least, shakedown time. Which is always kind of wise, anyway, but especially if they can't seem to get enough of them off the line to get them in their own retail operation.

In advance, so I don't have to bother every instance, for everyone who has received an MB Air from an online Apple Store pre-order: You say, looks and works great! It's perfect! They got this one dead right first go! My response is, so did they with my first-generation MacBook, no "sudden shutdown" problem at all, whatsoever, period, got a little warmer than I'd expect but hardly what'd I'd call too hot for a notebook, until the fan firmware update and then my MacBook was almost downright chilly all the time -- I caught it once borrowing one of my sweaters. Ran like a complete champ, no defects at all, especially none of the very common "sudden shutdown" problem. Not a one. Not even a suspicious freeze or crash. For almost four months. Then it was "sudden-shutdown" city, let me tell you.

Weird. On battery or mains power? My original MacBook is bright bright. As bright and sharp as the Air with it's LED backlight. Maybe they switched LCDs on the MacBooks somewhere in there, to economize production.

Houston TX Stores

No demo units at Sugar Land, TX... reading the thread I find that there are demo units at Houston Galleria and Woodlands. Has anyone been to the Memorial City store?

I found myself at the Memorial City Mall saturday afternoon. They had a demo unit and a display unit, but none for sale.

FL Mall has no units for sale. Millenia claimed that they don't get shipments on Mondays (what?), but here they say they get them every day. The recommendation is to call around noon, and they might be able to hold inventory if they have a lot in.

Hey, I'll be very happy if you're right, but I've seen no indication that they'll be anywhere in quantity today. I'm sure that if it's a delay it isn't production, it's shipping, due to the storms in China.

Anyway, we'll find out soon.

I just called too, the girl on the phone said that they didn't have any in, she went back and checked, and confirmed that they don't have any in yet. She also said that they haven't gotten today's shipment in yet. She guessed that would be 'around 1.' She also said, 'trust me, if we had any, i'd be pushing them out the door.' I'll be interested to hear what happens.

Thanks! :D

I wouldn't trust anything said over the phone -- if you have the time, head to your local Apple Store now as now is by far the most likely time for them to have it in stock...

cambridge side...cold

Just got back, what the woman said at the store is much different than what she said over the phone. She said "what I said was we have plenty in STORE as in demo models" I'm so heated right now. I had to leave work, rush down there...for this. get it together apple
