Of course they track the serials.

But if you read desenso's reply more carefully, you'd see that he suggested that the poster buy one from the store and return the one that is shipped. I merely agreed with that suggestion, assuming he doesn't open the one that is shipped.

I must've missed something......where's the implication that he "swap" the orders?

Sorry to interrupt the first unboxing photos............carry on folks! :)

Dont you think Apple would know what serial number was on the MBA that they shipped you?

Mac OS X 10.5.2 update that is coming soon .
Many forums are expecting 10.5.2 today .

beautiful. it's almost like buying a video game, loading it into your console and you're instantly welcomed with a title update. oh well. minor inconvenience.

So now it really appears as though the pre-order people are screwed... can't wait to go pick mine up at the 5th Ave store after work tomorrow while the rest of you who gave me crap about cancelling are hitting refresh on either a FedEx site (if you're lucky) or the Apple Store (if you're not).

And... I was correct. Feels good to be right when so many individuals were adamant that I was completely, 100%, incorrect. So take it from me, don't ever pre-order online if you're within walking distance of an Apple Retail Store.

Mine is in my hands now - eat that, suckers.

And where did you buy it from? They aren't selling yet in NYC.

Yes, I know. My thinking was if I get the stock model now, if say, 6-12 months from now when prices reduce - if it can be swapped. That would be my personal goal.

That's sort of my plan too. I ordered one with the 1.8 and the 80 gig HD because I figured a year and a half from now the SSD's would be larger and cheaper.

Of course, because I did that my MBA hasn't changed status and I figure I won't see it for another week yet. ::sigh::

but yea not a big deal
i'm just curious why the delay on these if it didn't come with 10.5.2

So CA
To swap an SSD won't you also need to make sure it is PATA and then get someone to transfer/clone the hard drive contents (I have no idea how one does a system reinstall on an MBA)

Two points:

The SSD is a SATA drive, no way to replace the HD, which is PATA, to work with a SATA connection.

The after market SSD are all in the 2.5" form factor. The SSD in the MBA is a 1.8" form factor.

a roughly 150MB update takes 30 minutes to download (have a 15Mbit line at home), and then an additional hour of installation. partially this is why my ps3 collects dust (but that's for another topic of discussion).

as for the delay (after all, the official press release hit in 2 weeks + 1 day), there are a host of factors that led to the delay, i think, but mainly production-related; snowstorm in China, probable low yields of the processors, procurement of parts. again, all in speculation ;)

just hope when the halfa-gig update drops, it doesn't drop apple's servers to its knees.

The SSD is a PATA drive, not SATA.

Newegg has a few of them on sale already. They are definitely available.

After market SSD come in both 2.5 and 1.8.

I don't think anyone is suggesting attempting to swap one MBA for another. I would legitimately expect the store to accept a return from something I ordered online if it is sealed. I understand a phone rep may have said "you must ship it back", but I don't believe it. I'd instead let store management step up and help solve the problem. I'd be very forthright about it too, showing how I bought it in store the week before even.

@ LosJackal - I tried to bring back an unopened Apple TV and they told me that I had to send it back to apple.com and I couldn't return it at the store.

Crap!

Just called FedEx and they said that my package is scheduled to be on the 1:00 flight tomorrow, and my estimated delivery would be Tuesday. So much for "overnight" shipping :(

Yea but if you are buying one from the store and returning the one that is shipped you are still swapping out MacBook Air's theres no 2 ways about it.

Even if he doesn't open the one that is shipped Apple's policy is to only return orders from apple.com through the mail. Not at the store. So yes in reality he IS swapping it, which would not be right because you cant wait an extra day or 2.

The screen is also very good -- it looks miles better than whatever they put on the standard MacBook. The colors really pop thanks to the (love/hate) glossy finish. As with the keyboard, it is striking to see a display of this quality on a laptop with these dimensions.
:apple:

Oh no! It's a glossy screen?! I didn't even realize. I can't stand those. The glare is just too terrible.

And it could have been perfect....:(
