I used a DisplayPort adapter set at 1.4 on the 5K2K… there’s no way to get HDR like you can with the Thunderbolt cable! Ughhh

That's strange. HBR3 x4 is enough for 5K2K 60Hz 10bpc RGB so HDR should be possible. Is the display set to DisplayPort 1.4 mode?
Does HDR with with DisplayPort 1.4 connection to an Intel Mac?

Ohhh... You mean you get the full resolution connecting through Thunderbolt with a 2019 model. Then there goes my theory :) Thanks anyway.

So... today something odd happened to the display: it wouldn't give me HiDPI even switching between DisplayPort 1.2 and 1.4.

Then I set it to DisplayPort 1.1 and it worked.

Super odd...

Hi there, I am new in the forum and want to thank you for your valuable inputs.

Connecting my 34WK95U with my 2021 M1 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt resulted in the Mac detecting the monitor as having a max resolution of 3440x1440 as many of us have experienced. No tool (SwithResX, BetterDummy etc.) or setting was able to change that. But with the recommended USB-C to DisplayPort cable I can get the full resolution.

Now it gets interesting: A friend of mine has the same setup: same M1 MacBook Pro, same monitor. At his the monitor works fine (sic!) even with Thunderbolt. The only difference between the monitors: Mine is built 4/2020, his 11/2020. So I guess it's the firmware?!

Does anyone know if and how I could update the firmware? The "OnScreen Control" tool 5.14 I downloaded from LG does not recognize the monitor.
I’m having this exact problem. Nothing I do or try is giving me more than the 3440x1440 resolution. I tried using the monitor with my Windows work laptop, too and am having the same issue even though it worked perfectly before. Do you mind sharing the link for the exact USB-C to DisplayPort cable you’re using? Thank you!

His computer + my TB cable + his monitor OK
His/my computer + my TB cable + my monitor not OK
(Again: my computer + DP cable + my monitor OK)
So, I guess the problems occurs only with specific examples (independent of production month/year) of the monitor, not Apples fault.
I opened a service request at LG. Let's see what (and if ;) they respond
I got the problem resolved. Or rather: LG repaired the monitor! They provided me with the local service center, which is VMS Elektronik for Austria. I got a ticket to send it in free of charge (luckily I still had the original packaging) and got it back within a few days. They changed the mainboard and now it works flawlessly. So - for those out there with the same problems - it might just be a hardware problem that can be fixed. Free of charge within the 2 year warranty. Thanks VMS and the community here for your support!

@JWGraz that's great! Can you tell me if you're able to run at scaled 3840x1620? Right now I'm on an ultrafine 4K at 3008 x 1692, but I'd like to upgrade to the 34" Ultrawide, but it's only worth me doing it if I can run at my desired resolution of 3840x1620.

Here you go. Here are all of the resolutions available now:

Below 3200 x 1350 is 3008 x 1269. I still can't get 5K + HDR to work at the same time, but this is already better than most other high res monitors.

That's perfect, 3840x1620 is just what I want! Personally don't need HDR as I'm a developer, but I do appreciate the extra space for more windows/code.

I am looking for a Thunderbolt Dock that works with my LG 5k2k and Mac mini M1 + 14' MBP.
Reading through the thread, the Caldigit TB3 seems to have its problems waking up the Mac.

I am also curious, if using a DP 1.4 cable on a Dock (instead of the TB cable) would work better?

Any input welcome. Thank you :)

Which picture settings do you use? I use the monitor mainly for content creation so I need accurate colors:

Auto Brightness: On
Contrast: 70
Sharpness: 50
Super Resolution+: Off
DFC: Off
Uniformity: Off
Gamma Mode: Mode 2
Color Temp: 6500K
Response Time: Normal
Picture Mode: Custom

I'm not sure about the Gamma Mode. Mode 2 is default but the manual says if you don't want to adjust it select Mode 4.

What's everyone's favorite / ideal resolution? I just got a M1 MBA and using dummy @ 3392. Text at 3840 is just way too small for me. Seem to work great, although you have to deal with the quirk of mirroring a virtual screen. Seems that sometimes my safari window disappears to the second screen, and I have to restart it again to bring it back.

Seems that 12.2 again crippled the resolutions for M1. On my Dell U4021 I don't get 3840 anymore and had to use betterdummy...

On my LG 5K2K this morning, my resolution was suddenly capped at 3440x1440 via TB3 without any changes overnight, and still on 12.1. I upgraded to 12.2 and still no change.

I managed to fix it for now by changing the monitor settings to use DisplayPort 1.4. I suppose that’ll work until the next unexpected change that breaks it again!

UGH! I have a 16" M1 Max, just upgraded to Monterey 12.2 and lost the scaled 3840x1620 option for my 5K2K u4021qw. =P

Did this happen to anyone else?

Make sure you report this as feedback to Apple. Betterdummy is nice and many thanks to the developer but Apple needs to fix this. Disappointing to see they also removing it from the M1 Max and Pro, why ?? For this I wanted to buy a Mac Mini M1 Max replacing my M1, but now I'm not sure.... Apple seem to only add scaled resolutions purely for the Pro XDR screen... Bit odd.

Question, what adapter did you use to get the DisplayPort 1.4?

I’m not using an adapter. I’m using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable to connect to my MBP M1 Max, but yet in the onboard LG monitor settings, changing DisplayPort from 1.2 (or 1.1) to 1.4 fixes it for some reason and I can use full resolution again.

Is your display connected to a dock? Is another display connected to the same Thunderbolt port? Does the Thunderbolt tab in System Information.app say the cables are all 40 Gbps x1?
