I have both CalDigit TS3+ and the new TS4. They are both fantastic. However this Dell monitor doesn’t need any docks, since it can charge your MacBook directly and uses Thunderbolt 4

I’m just looking for more USB-C ports since that’s what I’ve switched to after having a Lg Ultrafine 5K with only USB C ports in my previous monitor.

Hope it may help you,

cheers!

Just to let you know, I've just tried the SwitchResX method outlined on the previous page and IT WORKS on an M1 Max MacBook pro. Not sure why it might not work on a non-max one but deffo working for me. Phew! Thanks @Grimp

Using a Dell U4021QW Display, Monterey 12.2.1

I was able to install SwitchResX and add 7680x3240 to custom resolutions as per instructions in page 25, BUT I didn't need to disable SIP. It just works and the option is back <3

Display: Dell U4021QW

Ok - hoping for some help from you fine folks.

First, I just took delivery of the 40" version of this monitor, the LG 40WP95C-W. Came direct from LG. And it's 5k/2k, same AR, so I would *think* it should be a similar process.

Connected it to my MBP 14", Max(ed), 64GB. Connected directly via TB. In clamshell mode.

Because @rojharris was able to get it to "just work" without disabling SIP, I tried the same, and it worked. More or less.

First, I wanted to ask @Grimp where I can see that detail broken out as you have in the last image in your post I quoted? I can't seem to find that. It'd sure be helpful to confirm this info. ETS: sorry I found it in system report, and it does show Resolution as 7680x3240 and UI Looks like 3840x1620 @50Hz, so it's consistent with my 50Hz problem.

Next, I wanted to ask @sallar about the Colour Profile in your post...is that something custom you did, or did it appear as a choice? I ask because I have no such choice listed for any kind of SwitchResX.

Next, for anyone - in the actual monitor's settings, in Input, Aspect Ration...what do you use? I have it on Original but can't seem to tell if that's correct vs say Full Wide or Just Scan?

Finally, and most importantly, please see the images below. It appears I got it to work more or less, but the "more or less" part is that I only have 50Hz as the max option. No 60, no 72 (which this monitor is supposedly capable of. Is there a way to force that? The 50 isn't the end of the world, but I'd definitely appreciate higher. Anything else jump out at you based on what you see?

WHOOPS. Somehow the monitor itself had been set to DP1.2. Once I changed it to 1.4 the same resolutions but at 72Hz appeared for me in SwitchResX. Voila!

Edited to give some impressions of the 40"er.

Coming from a 5k iMac (the OG, late 2014 model) the text is definitely not as razor sharp, but I'd describe it as "very good" and definitely good enough for me to keep. The 3840x1620 72Hz HiDPI resolution (thanks SwitchResX) works really well and strikes a good balance between screen real estate and readability. Sound isn't as good as that on the 14" MBP funny enough, but fine. Laptop charges via the TB connection.

Not sure if I'll ever be able to go back to "normal" sized screen(s) after this. Even if Apple comes out with something like a 6 or 8k 32" consumer screen...not sure I'd trade the LG for such an animal at this point. The only thing I'd appreciate and trade for would be even greater pixel density but at this size...

I am on a M1 Pro MBP, and I can confirm that the solution on page 25 worked for me. Thank you so much! It took a lot of searching online to even find this thread, but I just couldn't handle the situation anymore. I'm also using a Dell U4021QW, and the only options available were either ridiculously small or embarrassingly huge. 3840 x 1620 is just great!

Also, the 3840 x 1620 is actually showing up in my display preferences now. For those who have asked, I'm still on the trial version of SwitchResX. I'm assuming it will ask me to upgrade to a paid version in 10 days, but I'm going to run out the full 10 day trial to test that out and see what happens. At the end of the day, I'll be happy to pay for the app just to have this problem solved!

I just don’t understand why Apple removed the scaled resolutions in an update in the first place. This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me

While I think it’s overpriced for its size, I just got so used to my ultrawide. Every time I’m in the office with a 4k 27” it feels so tiny. I would miss it a ton

I have this exact issue. LG 5K2K monitor, MBP 14 M1 Pro.

SIP disabled/enabled same issue = "Not installed"

Just to be sure as I’m about to get a M1 Pro for work. Does the M1 not support any fractional scaling whatsoever or is it just limited to some? Currently running mine at 150% in Windows which is my preferred scaling.

Thanks. The thread is a little confusing

Edit: nevermind. Went back some pages and some options are still there. Will check at which resolution I run my monitor right now when it’s set to 150%. But if I didn’t screw up my math 3840 is exactly what I want 🙄

I called Apple support and complained about this, the supporter said "Ok, its probably a bug, we'll fix it later in an update" and then he took some screenshots.

I really wonder why Apple is so restrictive about which resolutions you can choose, it's just hi-res renders that are downscaled to the physical screen, there's no magic!

Anyway, I found this great tool, which in a relatively creative way, lets you force a lot of different HiDPI resolutions without any system hacks or console commands etc.

This is exactly why they removed that scaling I'm afraid
Nah, the Pro XDR screen is pretty limited in scaling options too, so will the new 27 be. Apple wants a 2:1 scaling and nothing else it seems, no idea why as the M1 GPU performance should be more than enough.

Hey, I can confirm what TssvMxqw said, I also experienced issue after upgarding to 12.2 on MacbookPro15,1 (15 inch late 2018). My display is LG 34WK95U-W.

After upgrade, I lost 3840x1620 I used for past year, only 3360x1418 next upper step was full native 5120x2120 resolution. My display is set with DisplayPort version 1.2 and connected using direct connection with Thunderbolt cable, no hubs.

Tried BetterDummy, I was able to get 3840x1620 back but it was blurry, no hidpi. Tried to push double resolution of 3840x1620 (7680x3240) via BetterDummy didn't work.

So I tried SwitchResX (paid version), below is a process:

1) ##Disabling System Integrity Protection (SIP)

If you are running OSX 10.11 or higher, SIP must be disabled. To disable SIP do the following:

  • Boot into the recovery partition by pressing CMD + R when starting up your Mac.
  • Once in recovery mode, open a terminal window.
  • Type the command csrutil disable
  • Reboot
2) Open SwitchResX, go to "Custom Resolutions", click "+" at bottom. Select "scaled resolution" from menu. All fields shall be empty, appart the last line where you put scale to : 7680 x 3240.

3) Hit OK, and close SwitchResX, it will prompt to save config, answer yes.

4) Reboot mac one again.

5) after reboot, open SwitchResX and check custom resolution tab for your screen, this shall look like:

View attachment 1954236

6) Then navigate to SwitchResX, you shall finally see 3840x1620 as HiDPI available, select it.

View attachment 1954237

7) Do not forget to check "Launch SwitchResX Daemon automatically after login" in SwitchResX's General Settings.

8) Reboot again into recovery partition to disable SIP (csrutil enable).

9) After reboot, external screen shall keep 3840x1620 HiDPI resolution.

10) Looking in OSX menu, I still cannot see 3840x1620 listed:

However display use 3840x1620 correctly and is sharp!

I have a Dell U4021QW but I don't now if there are difference of behavior with a PRO.
I think there should be not differences infact you can connect up to two external monitors with resolution up to 6K at 60Hz

I used the SwitchResX trick on Page 25 (adding a custom resolution of "7680x3240", then rebooting, then macOS offers 3840x1620 as a HiDPI scaling mode).

This works great on my MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max with Dell U4021QW.

If anyone has gotten the Mac Studio yet and has a 5K2K monitor, I'm sure hoping the same trick works (or is natively offered by macOS with that machine).

I've got one on order!

Seems like everyone here has had luck with Dell U4021WQ + SwitchResX, has anyone been able to get it to work with LG 5k2k 34 inch?

Based on Dell U4021WQ success stories, M1 pro and max both work.

It is really frustrating now, paying a premium for all this equipment and it doesn't even work.
