Does this mean you are unable to use a higher resolution than 3840x1620 in HiDPI?

Have you tested it natively at 5120? I currently have the 34" 5K2K and use it at 3840x1620 on M1 Pro Max and figured that the extra 6' should allow me to use the monitor at the native resolution.
Oops, missed this...

So yes, 3840x1620 is the highest HiDPI mode. 5120 works fine, but is not HiDPI which is a bit disappointing tbh as I'm used to HiDPI on my screens.

BTW, I have tried a 49" Ultrawide, but the bigger you get, the bigger the lack of HiDPI becomes at the higher resolutions.

Natively it was trying to use the 5120x2160 @72Hz, but when you do that you lose the "retina-like" text, so you end up with the blurry text issue although you get used to it.
I don’t understand. Not that I want to use my LG at it’s native resolution, but how is text less sharp then? Is this a problem with MacOSs font rendering?

Its blurry/not as smooth which happens when you have to run at a higher resolution resulting in a lower HiDPI.

I'll have to test this with a Mac then. If I run my LG at 100% in Windows everything is just as sharp and I have no idea why it wouldn't be 🤷‍♂️

****, so 3840x1620 is not possible on the M2? Then we'll have to stick to the M1 Pro/Max or wait for an M2 Pro/Max.
I can do 3840x1620 on my M1 MBA. I just need to select "Show all resolutions" before getting the option.

Hi, Update that I got the LG 34WK95U-W working at 3840x1620 with my 14" M1 Pro on macOS 12.4 Monterey.

Here's what steps I had to do:
1) Update monitor firmware using macOS OnScreen Control version 5.47 from this link. I had to do this to get it to be recognised as a 5120x2160 monitor at all. Without doing this it just thought it was a 3440x1440 ultrawide and wouldn't even that resolution at high DPI.

Hi.
I have been trying to update my LG34WK95U Firmware for over a year now.

Would you care to elaborate how you got it to work?
- which cable did you use?
- how was your screen set up for the update (clamshell, mirror, extended screen)
- anything would help - I have given up on this actually.

Also, can you share which FW version your LG is on now?

Thanks!

So will the 5k2k like the LG one will be properly recognized on M1/M2 like here ? (with proper scaling ? ).

Or that only works on MBP?

We are literally all in the same boat, the Ultrawide and Dual Displays guys.. Where the entry line chips don't support the displays properly and forces us to upgrade for the high end models where maybe we don't need the performance.

Look at my CPU performance for the last 30 days

For the GPU..

So as it turns out yeah, I'm getting the M1 Pro just for the displays and build/design quality lol.

omg thanks for the info i wanted to buy m2 air but seeing it will not support 5k2k hdcpi properly again I am better of waiting.

You cant. What you can is LOW DPI. Not HiDPI.
will i get "more text" option on 2160 screen on base m2 ? (will it trigger hidpi?) Isn't on m1 maximium resolution is 1296 hidpi ?

more text is would be for this monitor 1440p hidpi, right?

You can run 5120x2160 natively on the M2 Air. This is a lower resolution than 3840x1620 in HiDPI as that is rendering 7680x3240 pixels and then displaying them at your native screen resolution of 5120x2160.

So to answer your question - You won't get more text on the M2 than on the M1. You will get the same, both can run native 5120x2160 but neither can run 3840x1620 (From what this forum says).

To my knowledge, the only way to run those resolutions is to get an M1 Pro/Max for the time being.

So nether can run HiDPI 3840x1620 HiDPI but support resolution which should be able to run it ?
I don't get it...

edit:

So that screenshot i pasted above it not possible on MBA? aka HiDPI won't be triggered? How it will look like there won't be option "more text" ??

Your screenshot is too small and blurry for me to tell what's going on, but let me try to clarify @itsphilgeorge 's explanation.

Both M1 and M2 are capable of displaying 5120x2160 but this makes text/UI very small.
Neither can do 3840x1620 "HiDPI" -- because this requires the computer to render at a much higher resolution before scaling it down to 3840x1620.
Both M1 and M2 can do 3840x1620 "non-HiDPI" but this isn't optimal and you're better off getting a different display.

I'm not even considering running without HiDPI, cause text is garbage on "lowRes".

On the screeshot I attached options guy had in a yt clip on mbp 14' pro when attaching this 5k2k monitor.
This panel on MBP 14' M1 pro is recognized as HiDPI capable and give even and option "more text" which I think is 0.66 scale ratio so it would give 1440p hidpi, right? Are you saying that is too small ?
Wouldn't 1620 HIDPI be even smaller tho ?
Would that also happen on base M1?

I think 1620 HIDPI is something like "more more text" (not seen on display menu by default) as i understand and would be preferable for this monitor ?

Or i'm getting it all wrong again lol ?

M1 Pro, Max, and Ultra can do it. I was under the impression you were asking about the regular M1 and M2, both of which can't.
