Quite frankly its embarrassing for a trillion dollar company which sells two primary products(Mac mini and studio) which uses external display and this is the kind of support.

But I guess things like stage manager and new OS betas are more important.

FFS we are in the 13th version of the OS and external display support is dog ****. unbelievable.

Does 4k/120hz ycbcr420 work in Monterey?

I m running Ventura beta 2. I m thinking of downgrading due to app issues in the beta.

Did anyone get 4k/120/444 working with Hackintosh? (6950xt)? I’m thinking if it might be worth the hassle to convert my gaming pc to hackintosh until Apple gets their stuff together?🤔

at best you can do 4k/120/420 as of now.

until apple puts in a hdmi 2.1 port ,we are not going to get 4k/120/444.

actually, for me, 120hz is not quite important. I wish to get a 60hz 10bit 444/RGB. But for now, it seems we cannot get full RGB and 10bit (HDR) at the same time.

on that note, does that mean that anyone using RGB mode cannot view HDR content?

Hello, I read trough this forum, but im little confused. I wanna summarize some things, please correct me if im wrong.
Currently, we are limited to these options for 4k with the usage of integrated HDMI 2.0 port:

HDMI 2.0 - RGB - 60fps - 8bit
HDMI 2.0 - 444 - 60fps - 8bit
HDMI 2.0 - 422 - 60fps - 8bit - HDR(ish)
HDMI 2.0 - 420 - 120fps - 8bit

This does really not work for me. SO:

Will this work with apple sillicon?:
USB-C -> DP -(active)-> HDMI 2.1 - 444 - 60fps - 10bit (LG C2)

I will buy the one-directional optical active cable just to be sure if yes.
edit--
Will propably buy this adapter if someone can confirm, it works without chroma subsampling at 4k 60fps HDR 10bit.

Normally this would work, but the additional point you're missing in your summary is that MacOS is broken and (for whatever reason) removed the ability for DSC to function.

It could come back or be fixed in future releases of MacOS, but using the number of posts and length of this thread is evidence that this is unlikely :(

Yea this is really sad. With DSC, not only u can do 4k 60hz 444 10 bit, but also 4k 120hz 444 10 bit no problem.

Lets hope they fix it with the ventura OS update.

But I cannot even do 8bit 444/RGB "HDR" on my mac. The C2 goes to 8bit 4:2:2 chroma when the HDR is enabled at 4k. Windows works as expected over 2.0b hdmi. At least i can use 10bit 4:2:2 or 8bit RGB with HDR.

Another macos sw limitation ? Or solvable by EDID hack ?

And to top it of, VRR does not work over hdmi 2.0, but on my windows PC, G-Sync/Free-sync does, over the same hdmi 2.0 cable xD.

Someone published a prototype 2 weeks ago.
Not sure when to expect any major brand to use this.

VRR support is really nice to have using this chip.

But that Parade PS196 seem to be Displayport 2.0? We only have 1.4.🤔
It says 8.1 Gbps which is HBR3 link rate. What DisplayPort 2.0 features does the PS196 use if not higher than HBR3 link rate?
I don't think I would use that USB-C dock because it's limited to two DisplayPort lanes.

Isnt this enough for:
4:4:4 VRR 10bit HDR 60
4:2:2 VRR 10bit HDR 120

Not saying I would use this, but at this point, im willing to try anything.

But it seems, that until we find a device that can intercept the device edid information on mac, to report the connected hdmi 2.1 device as displayport one, we are out of luck.

I highly doubt that apple wil ever fix this. Its more likely that we will se TVs with display ports or usb-c with dp modes.

remember for DSC to work , both source and target must support it. LG OLEDs do not support DSC.
If you are using a DP to HDMI 2.1 adapter it's enough for the adapter to support DSC. I used one of these for two years with my PC without issue.

There is something wrong with MacOS that prevents the exact same adapter that works just fine in Windows from working properly. I fully expect it starts magically working the moment Apple bothers to add a HDMI 2.1 port on their Macs.

Hi,

I have Hackintosh Dual OS with 6900 XT (HDMI 2.1) and tested with LG B9 OLED TV:
Monterey 12.4 - 4k 60hz only :(
Windows 11 - 4k 120hz 444

Same HDMI 2.1 cable and input, just switched OS.
Here is WIndows 11 video:

I didn't record MacOS video, but I checked it and there is no way to get 120hz 4k due to OS limitation.

I just found this active adapter on Amazon

The reviews seem promising. I think I'll give it a shot unless anyone has already?

Trying to get 4k 120hz for my C1 from my intel 16" MBP
