the 201388-GRY is Synaptics (I'm guessing VMM7100 because it's a single output with a USB billboard device). fwupd in Linux won't identify the adapter because it's not a Synaptics MST Hub or any other device it knows about.
Actually the Cable Matters 201388 uses the VMM6100 as verified by Cable Matters tech support and by the VmmUpdater.exe app from the Microsoft Store.

Now that I think about it, the last two digits of the OUI in the AGDCDiagnose output in macOS for a Synaptics device is actually the Chip ID.
For the VM6100, SYNAa? [097-000] = the 097 is decimal for hex 0x61 and 000 is decimal for hex 0x00.
For the VM2320, SYNA# [035-032] = the 035 is decimal for hex 0x23 and 032 is decimal for hex 0x20 (used by the Club 3D CAC-1510)
etc.

I'm using a Macbook Air M1 and just got the AOC CU34G2X monitor which outputs 3440x1440p 144hz connected to my Macbook via IOGear USB-C to Displayport 1.4. It works perfectly and outputs at the correct resolution and 144hz. I have it connected directly to the monitor and laptop and I only use this external monitor. The issue is that when I put the laptop to sleep and come back after an hour, the external monitor doesn't turn on sometimes but the laptop display is fine. It also sometimes after wake from sleep, the external monitor will randomly turn on and turn off at random and will keep doing so until I unplug it. I am also using docking station for the other Thunderbolt port so I'm not sure if that will cause the issue above. Is anyone having this issue with their external monitors and if anyone has found a fix for this.

I have both the Club-3D CAC-1085 and the Cable Matters 201388-GRY. The CAC-1085 is Realtek (probably RTD2173) and the 201388-GRY is Synaptics (I'm guessing VMM7100 because it's a single output with a USB billboard device). fwupd in Linux won't identify the adapter because it's not a Synaptics MST Hub or any other device it knows about.

Both adapters support HBR3 x4 + DSC. I only have a HDMI 2.0 monitor so I can't test DSC without a method to reduce the lanes from four to two. I don't think either of them will enable the HDR option in macOS even though it should be possible. HDR and DSC are enabled in Catalina with the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter.

Update: They Club-3D CAC-1085 and the Cable Matters 201388-GRY can support HDR from macOS using a firmware update that requires Windows to apply.

Does 4k 120 hz work on Mac mini M1+TV? i've tried the other brand adapters and they are limited to 4k 60 hz and hdr doesn't work.

I'm testing with a Macbook Pro M1 plus Club-3D CAC-1085 and CAC-1567 USB-C to DP connected to a CX48 - so far I haven't been able to get 4k120 working. Still need to test the Firmware update, and also test on Macbook Pro 16" Intel and 13" Intel.

This is the only person I have seen so far that can achieve TV+4k+120hz

Be aware everyone, as of macOS 11.6 www.testufo.com reports that Safari browser runs at 60fps maximum. Chrome browser still runs at 120fps but not Safari.

I’m not sure if this is actually something within Safari or if testufo is reporting the wrong information.

True. I tried it on my Mac mini 2018 with W7500 with display set to 120 Hz and running Big Sur 11.6 and Safari 15.0. UFOTest only showed 60 Hz. 120 Hz seems to work fine in Google Chrome.app.

In Catalina 10.15.7 with Safari 14.1.2, I am able to get 118 Hz (which is what I set the display to). I can also do 230Hz and the UFOTest will show that (but my display can only show up to 144Hz).

On the testufo website it has always reported Safari as an unsupported browser for 120Hz.

I'd like to know if Safari is still refreshing at 120Hz and testufo is inaccurate, or if Safari 15.0 has really been downgraded.

I upgraded my Catalina to Safari 15.0 and the ability to go over 60Hz in UFOTest still remains. So this is a 11.6 issue?

Yeah 60hz still an issue on Monterey latest Safari and Safari Preview. Chrome is still 120 on the ufo test.

Interestingly, the brand new Macbook Pro with HDMI port does not support 4K 120 Hz either. It also tops out at 60 Hz according to the specs listed on apple.com.

So disappointing. How do they push out a $2500 laptop without support for this? Blows my mind. I was all ready to buy one, but have no interest without support for a 4K@120Hz external monitor. My crappy work PC laptop can drive 4K@120Hz.

Can’t be right.

M1 Mac mini can do 4K 120Hz, can’t it? My M1 Mac mini is doing 2.7K 120Hz with HDR.

EDIT: Understood, over HDMI. I’m going from Display port.

Nice. Didn’t see the post earlier. Will definitely have to look into this. Thank you

Which firmware version is that for the CAC-1085?
Firmware versions listed at https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ransfers-recommendation.2278473/post-29466205
The Cable Matters firmware is available from their website. https://kb.cablematters.com/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=147
For Club-3d firmware updates, email support@club-3d.com

I'm not sure why the Cable Matters is limited to 4K120 or 8K30 since the Synaptics VMM6100 is supposed to be able to do 8K60.

https://www.synaptics.com/products/video-interface-ics
If it can do 8K60 then 4K240 should be possible but it says 4K144.

The Club-3d adapter uses the Realtek RTD2173 which should be able to do 8K60 and 4K240
https://www.anandtech.com/show/1453...s-rtd2173-displayport-14-to-hdmi-21-converter
But club-3d only mentions 8K60 and 4K120 (at least they don't limit 8K to 30Hz):

I asked Cable Matters a while back about this, and they said it’s supposed to support 8K60, but they were having issues in testing, so they decided to scale back the advertised specs until they resolved them. That was back in January, so seems like they never did.

Have you tried the firmware update yet? I also have an LG oled TV so 4K120 would be really nice.

dumb question, but...
currently using USB-C -> USB-C to connect M1 mini to a 4K 144Hz Gigabyte M28U monitor.
If i use HDMI (monitor supports HDMI 2.1), can i run 4K @ 120Hz without issues?

I'm willing to "sacrifice" 24Hz for freeing up a USB-C slot at the back of Mini...

I’ll have to try the new firmware myself. I can test it with an M1 Mac mini and Intel MacBook Pro 16 on an LG CX 48” by tomorrow

No. Mini has a crappy HDMI 2.0 port
