I am running 11.3.1 (20E241) on MP 2009 converted to 5.1 dual CPU 12 Core starting from a NVMe drive.
PCI devices:
  • AHCI controller in slot 3 (dual SATA SSD Controller)
  • Radeon RX 5700 XT in slot 1
  • USB 3.1 in slot 2
  • NVMe controller in slot 4 (boot drive)
My wifi card is the old and original non functioning one, my NVRAM is still clean.
Is this one of the machines that was supposed to have issues, right?
In case any more details would help, please advise

Can you reboot successfully 10 times in a row?

Yes, just need to make sure it boots from the right drive.
Something happened that I need to select the boot partition manually in Open Core as it tries to start from an old installer partition...
Just rebooted again for the Romtool to enable the kernel extension. No problem at all.

Can you confirm your PCIe card slot list and update your original post, as surely you can't have a USB 3.1 and an NVMe controller card in the same slot [2]? Any and all differences for machine setups on 5,1's that 'are' working with 11.3x may help others diagnose the problems many of us, like me (who can't get anything after 11.2.3 installed), are having.

Hold CONTROL when you hit ENTER on the boot picker, and that selection will become default.

Click "Restart" from the login screen, at least 20x in a row (preferably 30x if you reach 20x successful). I believe I have the record at 22x, so 30x would be very significant.

installed 11.4RC over 11.4 Beta 3, unplugged USB, Update run thru without any glitch.

but sadly, the race thing is still present. At least it means for me that I can not cold boot with USB Hardware plugged in.

I only tried it 10 times, not more, yes. My mac is running really well and stable.
As there are reports on the wear on the NVRAM with deliberate boot loops, I actually don't want to redo these tests.

Sorry, glitch when typing. The NVMe is in slot 4

Is there anything else I could diagnose without reboot loops?
btw: Funny enough my reported firmware version seems to be off (See below)
I am on OC REL-068-2021-04-05 with the package from Martin, unmodified. Just one version behind...
Just realised that this package is modifying the reported firmware version in "FirmwareFeatures".
Just saying, in case it had anything to do with it...

Wise guy. I really don´t undestand people doing that.

Hi,

There might be some nice bug in the installer itself. If you are stuck in a reboot loop on the update or on the progress bar stuck, just keep restarting and it should finish the update on one of them. On 2 occasions it was after the 4th attempt and the second one after 11 attempts.

Thanks for the update. Sorry that some are hostile to you not wanting to reboot for whatever reason. Everyone has rights. I’m happy to experiment with my 5,1.

Can you confirm that the unaltered REL-068 package you are successfully running 11.3.1 with is from Martin Lo's main/updated posting: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/activate-amd-hardware-acceleration.2180095/post-28255048

Hmm, you have 128GB of Ram in your successful 11.3.1 setup. That’s a lot - so I’m wondering if OpenCore has to slow down sufficiently to map the memory modules enough that a race condition isn’t encountered? I’ve been wondering if there is part of the config.plist settings that can slow the whole boot or install process down by ‘x’ millisecond between each step (far more than the default ‘as soon as possible’). I’d rather sacrifice a slow boot than to be looking at my 5,1 possibly stuck at 11.2.3, when older Macs are continuing to be updated to newer versions of Big Sur.
