Dual Clovertons Might Not Be Possible • Multiple Computers Complicate Creativity

devmage said:
I ordered a Mac Pro because it kicks ass and I can boot into Windoze for gaming if I feel like it :) It would seem that if you believe you could benfity from multiple cores so much you could just use more than one machine with distributed computing. I also highly doubt the 4 core processors are as close as you guys think nor wil the be as cheap as everyone thinks. We'll see though :) I don't my life on hold for what could be, I bought my rev a G5 and never looked back. I'll do the same with the Mac Pro :)
Intel has already announced they will ship Kentsfield and Clovertown 4 core processors in the 4th quarter of 2006. You are simply not up to speed on the Intel Core Microarchitecture Roadmap. No way will more than one computer make it easier. How you could not have already graduated to the Quad when you stared on the Rev A sGHz G5 is hard for me to understand. I owned 4 different G5's during the last two and a half years. And if I had held on to my Dual 2.5 Ghz G5 any longer than February, I would have been backed into a DEAD END Corner. It started completely coming to a halt in January once I started seriously crushing video.

Quad saved my life. Need OctoCore ASAP.

Wow, I just learned a lot. I really had no idea how the multiple cores actually worked but I got my answer. Quad core macbook pro anyone?
Mobile 4 core processors are probably not going to be ready before the end of 2008. Thank you for the appreciation.

Maybe an 8 Core Mac Pro is Coming In January • Not Certain Now • $3999 Not Cheap

yellow said:
I don't think there is a new model coming in January.
Maybe some updates to existing models, but according to Steve Jobs, the transition to intel is complete.
You have got to be kidding. There is an 8 Core Mac Pro Coming In January. Period. You are fully uninformed to not know that. Sorry. Not meant to be harsh. But I am 100% Certain 8 Core Mac Pro Ships DURING Winter 2007. Read the roadmap and know Intel has already promised Clovertown shipping in 2006.

You are completely out of touch with the Core Explosion that is coming in 2007. This Mac Pro is a STOPGAP model. Kentsfield is going into a completely new iMac design this Winter as well. :)

Yeah the transition to Intel is complete. But the Core WAR has just begun.

I Need More Cores Not More Speed

epitaphic said:
That doesn't necessarily mean the lineup with stay stagnant. For reference, Yonah (Core Duo) was completed on late Nov/early Dec '05 and officially announced 5th Jan '06. MacBook Pros had them 5 days later.

If Clovertowns really do get announced sometime December, there's every reason to believe 8 core macs by MW'07. It doesn't necessarily need to be addressed in MW as its a consumer show, but apple could just as easily quietly add Clovertowns to the MacPro lineup (eg sell quads and octos)

For those of you impatiently waiting for these new chips (I'm looking at you MultiMedia), don't get your hopes up too high. Yes the chips will be released soon and yes the 8 core prophecy will come true, but at a cost. Clovertowns are actually a step down because it needs to compromise with two Woodcrests shoved in together. The FSB will be twice saturated and what's worse, the FSB speed will actually be decreased to 1066. Clock speeds will also be nocked down (similar to the move to dual core G5). While you probably will get faster encoding speeds, don't expect it to beat a dual Woodcrest at every benchmark, it'll probably get its *ss kicked in a lot of areas. True ocots are coming only with Tigerton, still some time away.
Thanks but that's not my problem. My problem is the need to SIMULTANEOUSLY crush video across as many cores as I can get in one Mac. So I can live with the downshifts. Speed is not the issue for me. The ability to run a bunch of conpressions at once is what I'm after. So I will be happy to accept any kind of compromise in the Dual Clovertown Mac Pro. :)

I'd avoid the 7200.10 unless you like griding noises to shake your case  - far too noisy because Seagate don't use Acoustic Management anymore. I'd recommend the Western Digital 320gb and you can enable acoustic management to 100% if you have a PC and the Hitachi downloadable hd tools cd.

Yeah...hearing about this made me rush to cancel my $94 order from NewEgg. HDs make enough noise as it is--anything more than normal noises is enough to make me go paranoid.

"Is that clicking...hmmm nope"

"Oh wait, is THAT clicking?...hmmm maybe, but it was close"

The above, of course, representing my typical thought process.

Am I Reading Rude?

savar said:

Am I being rude? I don't mean to be rude.  I love the new Mac Pro. It's just not that much more Mac than the G5 Quad to be worth the money now compared to what $4k in January for a Dual Clovertown will buy. Sorry. There are people here saying Dual Clovertown Macs Aren't coming in January. It's that I think it's a pretty absurd theory? No disrespect intended.

What's a guy got to do to express a strong opinion here without getting banned?

Can't we have a warning system. I need a warning system.

You guys can all rag on me in January if it doesn't happen. But please recognize me when it does. Ban me for being 100% certain what's going to happen in January? I don't get it.

Is Sdashiki rude to agree with me?

i think he meant a new update to the line, not a new computer.

to think intel, amd or the like wont come out with quad core chips next is just lame.

eight core then sixteen, its called technology advancement.
Should he be banned too?

Multi, I like how you say it is 100% going to happen with the dual clovers. There is no way you can be 100% sure of anything Apple is going to do, unless you are Steve Jobs. Sure it is on Intel's roadmap, but that doesn't mean that Apple is going to want to take a loss on those chips, just so they can keep there prices the same, but the chip is going to be like $1000 more. I'm not saying it's impossible but there is no way you can say that 100% it will happen.

Last time I checked Clovertowns were not Multi-CPU capable, that would be the Tigerton. Am I wrong on that one?

Even if Clovertown/Tigerton are announced they may go in the Mac Pro, but at a hefty price. The market is just now shifting to dual core chips, quad core chips will be a luxury and have a price tag to match. It will be at least a year or two before prices come down to a level where people would want to buy. Unless Apple gets a real big discount quad core isn't coming to a Mac Pro near you for under $3000 and that is being very nice.

with Hamburglar.
Also keep in mind that the Xserves are machines that Apple tries to strategically place in the corporate sector. Buying 1-10 of those beasts @ $4000 each is more doable for large companies than charging $4k for a Mac Pro of the same specs. Many companies buy those in bulk too, but there are a lot of consumers who would faint at the notion.

For starters, what does 100% certain mean? Are you willing to bet your life on this?

Roadmaps from a CPU vendor? Hmm, didn't IBM's roadmap say that the G5 would be running cool at 3GHz two years ago?

Yes, I believe that Intel will have these chips made, but no I do not expect to see them in any Mac before July 2007 and then it will only be in the high end MacPro.

New MacPros will not be released by Apple in the next 6 months. Sure Intel may have new chips ready, but beyond speed bumps don't expect anything.

In the next six months you will see Apple shift focus back to their consumer lines (iMac, Mac Mini and MacBook) with a possible refresh of the MacBook Pro in the next two months and their cash cow, the iPod.

I've seen this asked about 100 times on different forums and have yet to see a response.

CAN YOU PUT A STANDARD PC COMPATIBLE Nvidia/ATI PCI-E VIDEO CARD IN IT?

I don't mean to be rude, but this seems to be a very popular question, with very few answers. I've been wondering it myself for months. Maybe no one knows yet, but if you do, please fill the rest of us in.

BAD NEWS, GUYS. :((

I just got back from the Willow Bend Apple Store, bought the ONLY MAC PRO they had :)

It's a standard config.

Booted it up, everything great.

Shut it down, installed nVidia 7900GTX from my PC Gaming Machine...

Boots!!!! :) :) :)

But no video :(( :(( :((

You can hear the machine boot with the hard disks spinning away, even get the happy chime... no picture whatsoever :(

I'm installing bootcamp now, and windows, and see if it will work booting into windows :(

Could be a driver issue ? Either way, thanks very much for trying. Can you try the 7900 on the 16x slot and the 7300 on the other, do you get video in that config ?

That was one of the things I was planning on trying.

Booting OSX from the 7300 and if it work on the Bootcamp EFI/BIOS Windows XP setup, changing monitors to the 7900!!!

Will let you know.

I'm hoping it's a driver issue on the macs...

But we'll see :(

Anything else anyone wants me to try, LET ME KNOW ;)

 I hardly caught a glimpse of the loading screen before the desktop & Finder appeared. Fast. Most of boot time is in the pre-loading loading screen (the gray apple). Same on my PowerBook, but it takes a minute longer.

Thats about the same time it takes to boot for me on the Dual 2.7

Congratulations on getting it to work in boot camp, now u can do some hardcore gaming in win xp. Are there any driver issues or anything that does not work in boot camp for the mac pro?
Hope a PC graphics card can work in mac os X eventually.....

Awww, CRaaaaaaaaP!

Got Weird Message in Windows.

"Your computer is not supplying enough power to the video card to run properly. The card's clock speed and memory clock have been reduced to allow for safe operation..."

??? WTF?

Also, no bootcamp drivers, so no way to choose MAC OS X as startup disk... um... any help here?

Is there a key combo to startup on the OSX partition?

Thanks!

Richard
