I had a dream last night that they showed a prototype MacPro to some people. There was no case on it, just the internals could be seen. It was literally a desktop design, tower on its side. It had one Xeon processor, 4 ram slots, 4 USB 3.1 ports, 2 TB3/USBC ports, 2 double wide PCI slots, they were empty and there was some sort of integrated GPU. Boot was a PCIe SSD and there were 4 hard drive slots, 2 for 3.5" and 2 for 2.5"

The entire thing was pretty compact, about half the size of a cMP.

good dream.

but they can be removed so technically even if they keep the same design they could make upgradable opus id love options from amd and nvidia. as I'm a green team member myself like both but prefer nokia especially when I'm feeling lazy and boot into windows for a gaming session. geforce experience and everything is so good.

I didn't browse the whole conversation, I must admit. Anyway, I'd just like to point out (if you haven't so far) that new Samsung 960 Pro SSD is out. 3.8 GBps... a little beast. Just ready for the infamous nMP.... :)

Surely it seems that the 256GB version should be finally taken off, it was pretty a shame for a Pro desktop.

I'm interested in seeing a link about having 960 for nMP. Where did nMP news come from?

It was just me speculating. Apple has moved to NVMe on notebooks, it might change the connector on the nMP and save some bucks on a "standard" SSD. These seemed just good candidates. :)

8 RAM slots would be the right number

I hear yah. Wish we could choose between second GPU or CPU. I bet they wouldn't sell as many dual GPU configurations.

Maybe, but a lot of people spending that kind of money probably want a dual CPU workstation. Mac Pros usually are big ticket items
.
You can also get a dual 6-8 core from HP for around $4000, but Apple will probably insist on their 30-40% margin so expect to pay twice as much.

Hank, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Too bad we will probably never find out though. :(

I'd love to see what system that is, dual 6 core for $4000. could you provide a link or part #?

Go to the BHphoto workstation page and look at some of their preconfigured HP and Dell offerings. Or you can put one together on the HP or Dell site. If you are up for some bargain hunting check out the factory refurbs from HP. They offer substantial savings and offer a warranty.

I've been looking into making the switch to Win10 if Apple doesn't deliver in October and to be frank have been shocked at how much you get for your money. One nice feature is that you can actually buy a machine from HP without a GPU. A lot of the HP boxes come with Nvidia Quadro cards, but I would prefer a Titan.

Just make the switch, no point waiting for something that won't happen or just disappoint. Once you swtiched it wont take long until you ask the question "why didn't I do this before". Unless you are a Final Cut Pro user and that is an important part of the programs you use I don't see much you loose to be honest (except smaller things and being used to OS X). I made the switch myself a few weeks ago, the machine I have beats the Mac on all accounts, and best of all I can manually upgrade EVERY part of the machine whenever I want new hardware, meaning cheaper over time and more options to choose from. Apple has ditched the pro market, time to face it.

I have a pipeline that's been running on OS X for many years. I use some Mac specific tools and my entire color calibration setup has been dialed in on OS X and that involved a lot of time, work and money. All of my RAID systems are Thunderbolt. Switching isn't impossible, but not a trivial decision. I don't need a 44 core dual pro machine, but something less anemic than the current nMP and with more expansion abilities and greater reliability.

I've been working on the Mac since the Fat Mac 512k (circa 1989) and use a mix of Linux, Windows and OS X at work. I've actually owned a few Windows boxes over the years going all the way back to NT 4.0, but have never been thrilled with them. I will say that Win10 looks like an improvement, but having to learn how to maintain Windows would take up a lot of my precious time and is something I would want to avoid unless it's absolutely necessary.
