I switched my delivery over from a 'rescheduled' delivery to a hold at local UPS.

My official delivery date has changed to Friday, May 20th and my Studio hasn't yet left Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong

I expect the same, although it's interesting that UPS has rescheduled your delivery but not mine yet.

UPS says that my Max is still at Hong Kong airport, where it is currently 2AM Wednesday. It also says that it will deliver my Max to my home on the U.S. east coast at about mid-day Wednesday local time (about midnight Hong Kong time).

Flight time from Hong Kong to Anchorage to Louisville is about 12-13 hours. Add delivery by plane and truck from Louisville.

This does not compute :)

The only thing that gives me (very slight) pause is that the flight from Louisville will be to JFK, which is local to me and from which UPS sometimes has very fast ground delivery.

Your UPS screen capture says that your order arrived in Taiwan from Hong Kong just before 6PM local time.

If I recall correctly, the standard UPS page doesn't show departures, but UPS My Choice (free to register) does. The odds are that your order has now departed Taiwan and is on flight UPS61. As the capture below shows, the flight is currently on its way to Anchorage and is scheduled to arrive just after 1PM local time. Anchorage customs clearance appears to be quick, and flight time from Anchorage to Louisville is about 6 hours. No problem getting your order to Louisville tonight. Then it's Louisville to wherever you're located.

Well, things continue to move forward. I have now cleared import customs, which should mean it is in Alaska.

Update on a group that ordered a Studio Max late March/early April with specs 32 core graphics, 64GB memory and 2TB storage.

Order dates and UPS delivery estimates as of Tuesday May 17, 3:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time:

@BenGieCruz (US), March 24: delivery Wednesday May 18 (originally May 16)
@cinder (US), March 30: Max still in Hong Kong; delivery Friday May 20 (originally May 18)
@evilhsoj (US), March 31: Max arrived today in Anchorage; delivery Wednesday May 18 (originally May 16)
My Order (US), April 1: Max still in Hong Kong; delivery Wednesday May 18
@placerights09 (UK), April 8: Max arrived today in Cologne; delivery Wednesday May 18 (originally May 16)

@evilhsoj's order is another example of UPS shipping a Max from Hong Kong to Taiwan/Taipei (800km/500mi northeast) to get it to Anchorage.

@placerights09's Max flew Hong Kong > Cologne direct.

I'm surprised that UPS has changed @cinder's delivery to Friday, but not mine. UPS's tracking page says that my Max, like his, is still in Hong Kong. Unless the tracking page is wrong, and my Max has already been flown to Anchorage, delivery tomorrow is improbable.

UPS' delivery estimate on mine slipped to Friday, instead of tomorrow. Has reportedly been in Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong since 5/14, and there's no movement. I guess that's the chokepoint for a lot of us.

I got the same message as you on Monday morning for a delivery on Tuesday morning between 9:00 AM and 11:45 AM. Obviously nothing happened to me and ups tells me that he doesn't have any info at the moment.

Edit: my bank account was debited on Monday by Apple care. And a second bank debit tonight from the Mac studio.

My max left Shenzhen on May 12 but no update since, it’s been almost a week. At what point do I give them a call. Is it likely it’s stuck in the Hong Kong bottleneck but hasn’t been scanned in? It’s coming to Australia so I assumed would be a quick trip from China to Aus. Thankfully the funds were deducted from my account in full a few days ago too.

A good number of orders have been stuck in Hong Kong for five days, don't recall if I've seen six days.

Still processing. Delivery window has stayed the same- May 20th to June 6th.

Doubt it will arrive in 3 days.

Watch for a "pending" charge on your credit card. My own history, which appears to be fairly typical:

May 10: credit card payment to Apple "pending"
May 14: "Preparing to Ship"
May 16: "Shipped"

My Max is currently at Hong Kong airport, where there appears to be a freight backlog. Orders have been stuck there for as long as five 5 days.

UPS says that my Max will be delivered tomorrow. If its tracking information is correct and my Max is still in Hong Kong, that's now impossible. I expect UPS to change my delivery date in the next few hours to Friday or Saturday.

My credit card payment is still "pending", not yet "posted".

By the way, when your status changes to "Shipped, the delivery date on your Apple order page might be rather distant. It's just a holding date. The link on the order page and in the accompanying Apple e-mail to UPS tracking will give you a "real", much earlier, date within a couple of hours. There may also be a brief period of being told that your shipment is delayed. You'll get more detailed tracking information from UPS if you sign up, free, for UPS My Choice.

If you've posted this before, I've forgotten. Do you have standard shipping, or express?

As far as I know, Apple only offers Standard Shipping for build-to-order computers. These are the two order pages for a Max identical to mine that I just took as far as shipping. Express shipping was not offered as an option. The next page asked for my shipping address:

I really want an Ultra, but it's probably too much for me. I mostly want it to use it with Topaz Video Enhance AI.
You'll have to weigh the prospective performance improvements against the cost to figure out whether you should buy an Ultra or not. It's worth noting that the M1 chips are not differentiated by 'speed' at the level of number crunching but rather by their numbers of processors. Although a system with an Ultra should be more responsive in general (because there's more CPU to go around and therefore less contention for it among your apps), it won't necessarily improve upon the performance of a Max or even a basic M1.

The number of tasks that effectively utilise 20 CPU cores is relatively small, and the performance advantage gleaned by adding processors does not increase linearly in any case. For instance, look at the blue line in the graph below, which represents a software task being executed 50% serially (on one CPU core) and 50% in parallel (on multiple CPU cores). Even if such a task were executed on a system with 2^16 processors, the maximum theoretical speedup factor (compared to a single-core CPU) is only about 2. The upshot is that only highly parallel tasks (e.g., compiling code, rendering images and videos, 3d modelling, compressing and de-compressing files, analysing text, etc.) will benefit significantly from the Ultra's additional resources. Tasks that are largely inherently serial will not.

Incidentally, you should consider how much time you'd actually save with an Ultra in the best case. If the Ultra can render a Topaz job ~50% faster than the Max, and a Topaz job takes an hour to render on the Max, then an Ultra could conceivably save you 15-20 minutes per job. If you're doing that every day then the time saved will repay the cost of the upgrade. However, if you're only spending 15 minutes using Topaz per week, then you might only save a few minutes each week, which you might not notice.

This is all to say that, in my opinion, people should only buy the Ultra if they'll use it for work that benefits from the additional resources, given how expensive it is. In practice, the Max is very likely to match the Ultra's performance most of the time, and it's significantly cheaper. Even the basic M1 chip offers excellent performance.

After almost a week, my Max has landed in Sydney! No tracking details between China and Sydney. Next Stop... Brisbane! Strangely, the DHL Express tracking page doesn't display an expected date of delivery. But so pumped it's finally on Australian soil. No long to go now!

View attachment 2006294

Congratulations!

Tracking details are not necessarily helpful. UPS says that I'll receive my Max on the east coast of the U.S. 11-14 hours from now while also telling me that my Max is currently in Hong Kong :)
