I ordered a stock Ultra from John Lewis (UK) just now.

They had 2 in stock yesterday and they went. One came back online today and I went for it…

Should arrive in a day or two…

To UK folk - if you're going for stock configs, it's worth putting your email into the John Lewis 'email me when in stock' thing.

Having said that, even though finance etc is approved, it's still processing. I'll update when it's been shipped!

Hi all - I know this thread is mainly for people ordering directly from Apple, but I wanted to update on my situation purchasing from a UK retailer, and hopefully save anybody else a lot of stress (2-3 days on the phone)!

My first 'purchase' actually failed - the credit side of things was accepted instantly, but John Lewis's automated system came back and told me that I 'failed' the store's mystical 'internal security checks', and cancelled the order.... no more info given. This was after I had passed both hard/soft credit checks and signed the credit agreement.

Nobody could tell me why it failed but I eventually figured it out - do NOT check out from the retailer using a guest account. As it's a high value item, they want you to have an account (but they don't tell you that before purchasing). I only checked out as guest as there was 1 base Ultra back in stock and I wanted to grab it before someone else did.

So, I was advised to purchase again, which I did - I re-applied for 0% credit, but this time was *not* instantly accepted due to two large credit applications within a few hours, so the finance company forced me to wait 24h then do an 'Open Banking' thing where you give them access to all of your account info, balance, transactions for the past year... great.

Anyway, the next day, that one was accepted too and it went through, and the retailer (John Lewis) have now processed the order and it will apparently arrive within a few days.

After all of this, if this has 'fan whine' I will throw it off the top of a tall building the window (along with myself).

Quite a stressful experience, I've missed some of the even more boring details out, but hopefully all is OK now, and hopefully. Moral of the story... do not check out using a guest account if you're purchasing a high value item!

Frustrating experience! I used to run a large e-commerce company and this sort of thing is actually quite common. Most of the e-commerce platforms (Shopify, BigCommerce, magento, custom) all either have fraud prevention options built in or third party companies like NoFraud offer plug-ins. The goal is to cut down on credit card fraud chargebacks, and the system uses a variety of algorithms. I'd guess it wasn't solely the fact that you used a guest account, but rather several different variables combined that flagged the purchase. They obviously don't want to tell you the reason because then fraudsters would know how to avoid it, but it creates a poor customer experience when there is a false positive as there was in your case.

When I worked at Apple retail stores, we were pretty good at spotting credit card fraud, but there was little we could do. In the early days, Apple would actually ask for ID that matched the card. But the credit card companies sued and successfully blocked this. It is against the merchant rules to ask for an ID in the US (as silly as that sounds.) The most obvious giveaway that it was fraud was what was called a "Naked computer" sale. Aka person comes in, wants high end Mac but doesnt ask many questions and doesnt want to add on anything (no accessories, warranty, anything.) These were fraudulent 99% of the time in my experience.

Thanks - before signing the second credit agreement I actually called up the reseller and said ‘before I sign, is there something I can do to stop this rejection reoccurring? Ask me anything!’. She told me that I’d actually already passed their security check this time around, due to not ordering from a guest account.

One thing that the person from the finance team also mentioned alerts them isn’t just the guest issue, but if they ask for next day delivery in a very high price item (I didn’t do that).

What annoys me is that the system allows you to purchase a high value item via a guest account THEN cancels your order. It can’t be that hard to check FIRST?

Anyway, the stock Ultra is already dispatched and will arrive tomorrow! Apologies to all those who have been waiting a long time, I feel guilty for jumping the queue. I did have to go through a few days of stress (I’m self employed so dealing with credit agencies is always stressful), if that makes you feel better!

Hi folks, new member here. Adding myself to the Ultra order list:

March 22 /Studio Ultra M1 20 CPU/64 GPU/128 GB/8 TB/June 9-23/

I used my apple card and the charge has been pending since my order. Still says "Processing" too. So no update since day of order.

I wonder how much the SSD actually makes a difference given their modularity.
I'm not sure what you mean. Any "modularity" seems iffy from the discussion I have seen, especially with Apple saying that components are not upgradedle, unfortunately. It would be wonderful if you could upgrade storage later (especially with more reasonably-priced 3rd party storage), or RAM for that matter. I'd love that.

I read @kingrikk's post as being about availability of configurations, not about replacement of storage down the road. During assembly, adding storage is dead simple. If workers have the SSD modules, it's surely not affecting availability of configurations.

Yes, I totally agree. Other than the subject of availability, which may be an issue currently with SSD shortages. I know that was an issue a few months back, but I have no idea if it's still a problem. I recently upgraded an external drive to an 8GB SSD, so perhaps things are back on track.

As I understand it, 12.4 was released on May 16. My Max was shipped on the 16th with the previous 12.3.1, which I think was released on March 31. As usual, updating took awhile. Good idea to find something to do instead of hovering :)

I purchased a base Max from an Apple Store on March 18 (launch day) and also had to update it.
Mine was 12.3.1. I updated to 12.4 before or after running migrating.

And you ordered the same configuration as me, but 11 days later. I certainly hope that means a bunch are getting out now.
I hope so too. Recent activity in this thread suggests that they're catching up pretty quickly. It seems as though orders placed within 1-2 weeks of each other were effectively batched together.
